Even if Haydn's concertos do not belong to his "core business", they really deserve to be better known. Personally, I had a very nice experience listening to his organ concerto Hob XVIII n°1 in C major, played by Oliver Vernet (Ligia Digital).

Wonderful review! I had always been uncertain whether or not buying this box. And after your suggestions I’ll go for it! Thank you Dave

There is also a very good set of the keyboard concertos on Capriccio, played by Schornsheim on organ, harpsichord and fortepiano. It is over two hours of music, but sadly omits the concerto for violin and keyboard, as well as Hob.XVIII:7 and 9 (both of uncertain authenticity).

I have the lira organizzata works by Christophe Coin played on one, kind of a clackety hooty thing (there are pipes) that is fun to hear, and it doesn't have the pitch issues of two recorders tootling in quasi tandem that make me want to scream

Thanks for this; Haydn is so great and now I have to hear some Haydn music I had never heard nor even heard about-the concerti composed for the King of Naples.

I love Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto. It sounds like it could’ve been composed in the 20th century. In fact, I thought it was a more modern piece before I found out it was by Haydn.

Of course, Haydn’s trumpet concerto was forward looking! He saw into the future, an instrument that would be able to play this piece. Having a good period recording is interesting, but it is clear that Haydn saw a superior instrument in the future.

Haydn wrote his trumpet concerto on commission for the virtuoso Anton Weidinger, who had developed a keyed instrument that could play a larger range of notes than the natural trumpet. Weidinger could play the notes of Haydn's concerto with ease -- but the instrument itself did not sound very good, and so did not become popular.

@@ThreadBomb I know that. But Haydn composed a brilliant concerto that looked forward to an instrument far superior to Weidinger’s.

Nice to see this video. As Haydn goes, one doesn’t hear anything past the trumpet, horn, cello, and oboe concerti. Why do we not hear the piano and violin concerti?

Kudos to labels like Naxos for doing amazing stuff like this. All to a generally very high standard. I have much of this stuff on separate discs. Didn’t Marc Hamelin do an amazing disc of piano concertos??

I saw Naxos put out a box of orchestral works by Sergey Taneyev. Would you be willing to do talk about him?

I think the trumpet concerto has a very good claim for being one of the very very very best concertos ever, with Mozart k503 and clarinet concerto and Ravel left hand and a few others.

I ordered this box last week for very little money from the mail order that is related to the cpo label. Is it allowed to mention the name?

Can you recommend some books about classical music in general and/or specific composers? I’ve read many composer biographies etc over the years but would be interested in your recommendations.

I recommend my books, of course. Others may have better suggestions.

@@DavesClassicalGuide Not better but other suggestion ! On Haydn, the book by Marc Vignal (1500 pages) is simply outstanding.

Of the ones I read, I can absolutely recommend these two : on Verdi : Mary Jane Philips-Matz and on Bach : John Eliot Gardiner.
