I would have loved to see Robert Johnson perform. The Ovation guitar factory is about a hour from NYC, but the other direction from Nazareth. That's an interesting place. I live nearby, a lot of people I went to school with work or have worked there. Years ago, whilst in Manhattan. I stopped at this teensy tiny deli-restaurant. It had like 5 chairs to eat at. I bought a sandwich sat down next to a woman who was eating and reading a paper. We talked while we ate, mostly about the weather, traveling, houses, just small talk. The woman was delightful. Only after she was through eating and left, I realized it was Joni Mitchell. Mary, you seem like a delight too. Being a musician is a profession where you are the bridge between someone's dreams and the "real world," their escape at the end of a long day, a warm friend who sets a mood.
Frank Galpin Ovation is open again in CT? I grew up in central CT and the first guitar i ever played in 7th grade music was an Ovation. I’d love a real CT-made one just for old time’s sake.
@@SombraPiloto Last time I drove by there were still people in that part of the building. They are housed in an OLD building in New Hartford. If they are out, maybe somebody is still fabricating wood products in there.
I am a comic book artist so my field of an artistic activity is completely different from yours, but once I played bass in a metal band. And your passion and your weekly videos made me go back to playing bass. And I discovered I still love it.I bought a new guitar,I realized I still remember how to play it.And I thank you for this,Dear Mary.Keep on doing what you have been doing!!!
I would have loved to have seen Jim Croce. I would like to see Clapton, too. I looked around and seem to have acquired 8 guitars, 4 in the past 5 years. The Martin factory was great, even my wife enjoyed it. We got to meet Chris Martin and Dick Boak and enjoy food and drinks. I was a lucky winner to the annual “Evening With Chris Martin!” I came home and bought 3 Martins, so be ready! I love your voice and the whole singer/songwriter style gives me hope for the music industry.
Had to order my signed EP til you can tour the States ;) Cant wait til it gets here. Love the channel and your music. Wish you the best with the rest of the tour.
You have produced many fantastic, inspiring and informative videos. This one may be my favorite. The joy you are experiencing right now is very transparent and incredibly well deserved. Here's to a spectacular holiday season and thanks for sharing your path.
Mary, I love your explanation of your view on success. Doing it your own way, setting your own goals. This is a master class on how to do it. Keep going girl!
Tuesday is always a special day of the week for me! Thank you! If I ever get to visit London again and you have a show nearby, I'm going to buy tickets for it.
I admire your tenacity and drive young lady, I wish you all the success a person can achieve. I myself am now turning 70 years old this year. I finally have time to enjoy my music and playing guitar more than ever. 50 years ago I played in a couple of small House Bands. We worked a couple of nights a week at different establishments similar to the Pubs in Britain. Always fun to do. Again I will say if I am lucky, When you achieve your success perhaps I will escape from America long enough to see you perform at Wembley
I like what you said about learning songs not just tricks. Lol I think anyone new to guitar are bad to just learn riffs & licks but they can't put it all together, they don't take the time to learn all the parts that bring together and make an actual song. I think that was great advice for something lots of people commonly do when they first start.
I love what you said at the end of your video about doing what being true to yourself and being completely honest. I don't know if I'll ever play guitar for an audience but I love playing the instrument itself. I also love the advice you gave about learning to play songs instead of trying to master too many techniques. Not trying to be weird by hitting on you or anything, but you really are a beautiful, inspirational person. Thank you for posting this.
Getting a chance to be in front of a full room is so important. You will make fans out a few of them. They will tell their friends. That cycle of building will continue with every show. Keep working hard, you have what it takes.
i absolutely love what you do mary, you’re an inspiration to a musician starting out like me. also i would’ve loved to have seen the grateful dead bc their live shows are just such a thing
This was really therapeutic to listen to. I’m a guitarist and I have my first gig this Thursday (for my university’s Battle of the Bands). I’m excited, but lately I’ve been bothered by people on my course whenever I whip my guitar out (I’m using it for a theatre module performance) going ‘play this!’ or ‘play that!’ and it makes me feel like I’m just a dancing monkey. But I’m not, I’m aspiring for greater feats than to just be a people pleaser. I love the idea of having a level of outrageousness to one’s life goals. I don’t know what mine is yet, but I dunno, something about this video really helped me today. Thanks Mary 😊
Tom Lees I like to BBQ & smoke meat. I have guests offering suggestions on what I should be cooking. It’s frustrating. Not the same situation but similar.
I'll never forget the most memorable support band I ever saw. The night before my English A level I decided it would be a good idea to go & see Sabbath at the Liverpool Empire. The support band were packed into a tiny area of the stage, their name probably appeared in small print at the bottom of a promotional poster somewhere, not that we'd have noticed. It was Van Halen!
Guitars are our wall paper. Our living room and dining room are lined with Gibsons, Fenders and Taylor’s. It looks like a guitar store. They all have straps and we just pull one off the wall when we want to practice.
I was old enough to have seen Led Zeppelin , Black Sabbath , Deep Purple , but didn't. I did see my favorite band Pink Floyd in the 70s , 1988 , & 1994.
I was fortunate enough to see Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble in 1989. I would like to be able to see him and the band again, and I wonder where he would have taken his music had he not departed life early. I "do" have several guitars(acoustic & electric), a few basses and a drum set. Currently play Bass live, but will jump to guitar or drums if asked/needed. PS. I could just sit and listen to you talk, and I'd be as relaxed as possible.
I am quite jealous of my dad because he got to see queen live in Sydney, it was part of the a night at the opera tour, so my answer is I wish I got to see queen when Freddie was alive
I would love to see The Beatles if i could go back in time. I was a month and a half years old when they came to San Francisco when they did their last full concert.
If you do ever get out to the Martin factory, hopefully you can schedule a meet & greet. It's not far from fans in New York or Philadelphia. There is some nice cycling around that area as well.
“Who would I want to have seen in concert from the past” Well Mary, you made some great suggestions. I would like to have seen Joan Baez in her prime, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, Allman Brothers with Duane, Roy Buchanan, Kate Bush and most of all, Rory Gallagher.
It’s so great that you’re touring with Bros. Landreth. I saw them recently in Philadelphia and they were incredible. Cheers to you, Joey and Dave, Josh Smith, Kirk Fletcher, Ariel Posen, Julian Lage and so may othe young artists who are keeping the music alive.
Hi Mary! Ever hear the slogan “there’s no better revenge than success”? Don’t let the naysayers get you down. But when success comes and the joy, it becomes less about revenge and more about being all you are created to be. I think you are an incredibly sweet and vibrant person, deserving of that 80,000 member audience. Let that loving what you are doing show through, as that is infectious and attractive. Write songs that explore a range of emotions and life situations and watch people come to hear and identify with them. I love guitarists, generally, and you’re at the top, because of your wonderful transparency. Thanks for sharing you! BTW, I own a Breedlove Stage Dreadnought and play background rhythm and fingerstyle - made of sitka spruce top and Indian rosewood back and sides - beautiful instrument with a piano-like bell-tone quality, with new strings, of course. So, I know more about acoustic, than electrics, but have played for many years and always looking for new techniques and skills. What can I say - I “dig” your channel!
In the winter months, you should consider buying hand warmers such as the ones that fit in your gloves which can speed along the warm up process. Congrats on all your continued success. Hard work really does pay off:)
JACKSON BROWNE!!! I saw him live in Montreal not long ago. The guy is amazing. He still performs all his iconic songs as if it was 30 years ago. He is my favorite along with Hendrix, Dylan. Classical is a mood thing for me. I never think that I need a hit of classical, like I do with Motown or reggae. What do you think of JACOB COLLIER? Do kickboxing instead of ordinary boxing to get a full body workout, besides it being a much more valuable self défense thing. I know you are doing it more for the workout but why not icing on the cake. Why not be more able to fight most effective timely If you are attacked
Practicing classical music: "something i kind of liked doing, but kind of not liked doing." i know exactly what you mean. Love William Walton! (and Rachmaninov, OBVIOUSLY) It's great nowadays there's something like Patreon. When you think back to days of yore, a musician was beholden to patrons, who were the rich and royalty, to make a living. After that fell away, artists were then beholden to publishers and record labels. Now, amazingly, it's truly down to the level of "the people." Sweet, horrible freedom! It's inspiring how you're making it work.
Just sharing something interesting a player older than you - when I was learning there was no internet at all! I am actually grateful that I was forced to train my ear by learning songs from recordings. We all used to sit by the radio with a cassette recorder to catch a certain song (that is, if we hadn't bought it on a tape or record). Rewind, rewinds, rewind to learn the song by ear and hand write out the lyrics. Wonder how many of those rectangular cassette recorders I wore out. I do confess to loving the ease of finding pretty much any song you are looking for on RUclips these days. It's amazing! (but yes, times have changed).
I love your videos and you are very easy to listen too. I hadnt picked up my guitars, any of them for at least a year plus. Im no positive how you came across my feed but I am thankful. since then I have brought my guitars to the shop and am re-stringing them. My pedals have been set up on the counter and Im actually playing again! Amazing! Your fault, and thank you so much for that. I really love how creative you are and your voice is so nice. Someday, I hope, I will open up the Logic pro x and put something down. First though, I am going to try and continue playing every day. Possibly start warming up the old vox as well. Much love and luck to you miss. Vincent. :)
I've been watching your videos for several months now, and am impressed by your willingness to show complete strangers (i.e., RUclips watchers) the process(es) you go through to grow and learn as a musician and performer. It's VERY difficult to make yourself vulnerable like that. I've been an inept guitarist for decades, and know nothing about the music business, except that this sort of thing (touring) is far more complicated and involved than it appears, but I nonetheless hope you can come to Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, in 2020, and play The Dakota. I will happily buy a ticket!
I also leave my guitars on the couch. I only have 3... the trifecta so to speak and want to add an Orangwood to my lot. It irritates the wife but she has room to sit... for now. :) Love your work. Life will be good when the CD arrives. Hopefully one day you will do a show in the States. Have a wonderful tour!
Band I would love to have seen : ELP in the late 70s to early 80s. I saw them at the end of their touring life in a bare bones, no stage effects concert with Jethro Tull. I also saw Emerson Lake and Powell with Cozy Powell on drums which was amazing. But ELP in their hey day would have been amazing. Similarly, Yes in the early 80s, Jimi Hendrix and John McLaughlin with Shakti.
I have been going to Open Mics and Jams for 17 years. I only have 2 guitars and I believe that's all I need. I have a DG-9 Fender acoustic and a 1968 Re-issued Squier by Fender Thin Line Telecaster. Both guitars are great.
The musician I would most like to go back in time to see and hear: Johann Sebastian Bach. Without him, a lot of the later music we know would not exist.
Hi Mary, when I was just starting to play the guitar you had to buy an LP just to listen to your favourite artists or you could buy a cassette tape and run the risk of getting it chewed up! then trying to untangle your tape from inside your walkman without snapping the tape, I have even used sellotape to join the tape up, lol the times..... all the best.
Keep up the good work Mary and keep the Tuesday tawks going, your RUclips channel has grown so much in the few years I've been watching which is amazing and well deserved 🙂👍 x
I would have given a great deal, indeed, to have seen Eva Cassidy live. To me, she was one of the greatest songbirds of the last 50 years. Mary said that some of her favorites had "died too young". That was certainly the case with Eva. We all lost a true treasure when she passed. It still fills me with sadness to think of her, even as I celebrate the gifts she left us all. Also, Mary! You're a military brat? Me too. Though much, much longer ago than you. I was born in Regensburg, Germany before moving to the States when I was about 3 years old. Many, many years later, I went back to Germany as a soldier, myself. Brats forever! JT
I would have liked to have seen more Jerry Garcia. I only got to see him 63 times plus Stan Getz, The Beatles w John Lennon, The Allmans with Duane, The Doors, Bob Marley, Coltrane, uh Hendrix, Louis Armstrong..
Hey great stuff here! My friend Pier from Brazil intrduced me to your music! I love it! And Of course The Rach 2 is a monument !!!! You got your self a new fan! Rock on !
You should totally do a video on what it was like trying to pursue music when ppl weren’t supporting you. I think that could really inspire viewers who are going through the same ;)
I lost count at 30, plus like 12 amps, and a drum set. Last guitar I bought, a Gibson 336 Kiefer Sutherland gold top ( at Normans Rare Guitars), I told myself that I was going to sell several of my guitars to compensate. I have yet to do that. Pretty soon I’m going to get all my guitars out and take a group picture... that should be interesting. 😄
Hi Mary. I started playing guitar 6mths ago to help with my anxiety and it has helped enormously. I love your channel and your infectious personality. I could not agree more with your answer to the first question, the first thing i did when i bought my first guitar (Ibanez s621qm) was hang it on my wall :). It has been played (a lot) every single day since. Thanks for giving us a great channel.
Hi Barry, thanks very much for your reply. I take the proper fish oils but i will for sure be trying my first sandwich today, even if it doesn't help it sounds delicious. I refused the Diazepam my GP offered. Many thanks, BB.
I gave my son two of my guitars and i still have eight acoustics:- 4 Martins, two Breedloves, a washburn parlour and a sigma.I now have essential tremor so now my playing is grocked. As a younger person,i had an early job which meant i could play from 1pm till 6.30 pm,break for dinner and then play 'till 10.30.I did that for two years....................
Saw Hendrix- 3 times. Cream, twice. The original Who. Albert King, BB King. ....but, never saw Prince live. Nor Bowie. Those two, i so wish I’d seen those brilliant artists. And, Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto #2, OH YES, the bomb. Love the vids. You are so real, you let your gear nerd shine. It’s truly endearing. I hope someday, I will play harp with you on a number....Just a dream... I’d fly to the UK to see you at Wembley!
I missed Bowie Live and I did have the chance to go but it did not happen . I did see Albert King live. He was amazing.I never saw The Who. A pity really.I have seen some now extinct artists close up such as Front row for BB King and Ray Charles together. Put that in your pipe and smoke it ;-P.
Good Day Mary; When I was 12 yr.'s old I saw Jimi Hen. 3 time's in1968. My Dad worked ( sound mix ) his show's & that is how I got backstage for all 3 show's. ( yes we got High )At 18 I became a stagehand like My Dad in Las Vegas NV. I've worked with a lot of Stars, But Jimi is to this day is a friend. I Loved the man, and my short time friend... Luv you too. Scott
I own four guitars. The only things I ask for in an instrument is that it has a good sound and that it handles well. Something that gets the job done. I've been playing guitar since the end of 1976.
Oh, on tour with the brothers! That's so fantastic. This is a tour that needs to sweep through the southern US - especially south Louisiana and Mississippi gulf coast and river towns like Natchez and up through the Delta to Memphis (which really should be a Mississippi town - but don't tell Tennessee!
Btw the Martin factory is only about an hour and a half outside of NYC by car. Awesome place, the museum is special. I'm from the area and the factory is only a short drive away from me!
Hello, Spender! Just received my copy of Lone Wolf but have not had a chance to listen to it yet. Looking forward to that once I dig out from under a pile of work.
That's enlightening, we kind of described our first songs of the live set as 'always difficult' to get the audience warmed up, but maybe our knuckles needed warming up ;)
Seeing Joni Mitchell in her prime was outstanding. When she played 'Coyote' I was in heaven. Opened up for Stevie Ray Vaughan. He died a few months later. I really would have liked to have seen Duane Allman, and, of course, The Beatles. Would any William Walton pieces work on guitar? p.s. - I feel like a baby in a stroller the way you are talking into the camera.

The formula for guitars is:
n=h+1
Where:
‘n’ is the number of guitars you need
‘h’ is the number of guitars you have
It’s just math.
Same formula for ukuleles and cats!
The number of guitars you want is n+1, n being the number you currently have.
The number of guitars you are allowed to have is s-1, s being the number that will cause your significant other to leave you.
These formulas work for bikes as well.
I've always been terrible at math but all this time I've been using this math. Mind blown.
So in matlab:
n = 1
While n
Thank you. Was looking for this formular.

“They all do different things” the drummers mantra about cymbals.
You can see mary is gradually getting more comfortable chatting to the camera its nice
“They all do different things!” is me justifying my guitar purchases to my parwnts
Well, quite right, a Les Paul plays different music to a Strat, everyone knows that!
Michael Gorman even babies know that
Im gonna go order another guitar right now while that’s fresh in my mind...
Haha same here!
Lmao

that is a brilliant idea. Open for yourself doing solo singer-musician thing and then full band on the second set.
Your Hamburg gig was great
thanks for that

I would have loved to see Freddie Mercury, Bon Scott and Jimi Hendrix.
I got to see Freddie Mercury and Frank Zappa... I was young but I recognized the gravity of the situation so to speak.

+1 for Rachmaninoffs concerto no. 2. Absolutely astonishingly.

Teach her guitar so she'll love having them on the couch:))
Savage Salty Dad but what if she likes it then wants her own guitar? That would cut into my guitar fund! Did you consider that? Jk
@@Steven_SK hey good point dude, didn't think of that. I'll keep that in mind for when I get a wife. Have a nice day dude:))
I !ove that little end riff... So relaxed and cool.
"some folk call this thing here a "gee-tar" if you know wwere that quote is from, you pass the vibe check. mary has a free bypass though
The Last of US... :)
I'll take 150 who love your work any day of the week. Joy in making art is rewarded with a smile you can see.
I have been going to Open Mics and Jams for 17 years. I only have 2 guitars and I believe that's all I need. I have a DG-9 Fender acoustic and a 1968 Re-issued Squier by Fender Thin Line Telecaster. Both guitars are great.
Beautiful town, pronounced “ooo den sah”. Love your work!
When you said William Walton, I blurted "yes!!"
I once learned his Bagatelle No 2 for guitar; gorgeous piece of music.
The musician I would most like to go back in time to see and hear:
Johann Sebastian Bach.
You look great! I was fortunate to hear live BB King, Joe Cocker, and awesome singer song writer many songs for the 5th Dimension, Laura Nyro!
I would have loved to have seen Jerry Garcia live before the 'H' got to him. He was unbeatable on the Europe `72 tour.
I think that could really inspire viewers who are going through the same ;)
"I'm not a guitar collector; I'm an accumulator", Mark Knopfler.
My brother and sister were born in BMH Rinteln too. I made my debut at the Lousy Mags in Aldershot, which probably explains a lot about my life :)
Keep doing what you are doing I'm enjoying watching the RUclips videos as a beginner guitarist you inspire me thank you 😀
Great work...GOOD LUCK MAY ALL YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE!!! 🎸😎👏👏👏
You should be playing every weekend, even if dive bars. You learn so much and meet so many other musicians. It's great!
Many thanks,
BB.
Just got your latist cd and wow love it
Mary, you have the perfect attitude.
You have the talent, just need to find the 80 thousand people to come to your Wemberly show👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻!....I’ll come 😎🇦🇺
Welcome to my country. Have a nice tour. Couldn´t come see you in Odense, since I live near Copenhagen. Please come to Copenhagen!
Just a three hours drive, I should have been there.........
You just keep proving them wrong! You inspire me!
I love these videos. ‘Nuff said. You are an inspiration
Hendrix, Simone, Mitchell. That tells me a lot about your soul. Agree with them all. I'd add Gordon Lightfoot, who somehow I never saw.
No you need to go to retrofret in Brooklyn nyc you can play some crazy old Gibson’s, fender, and of course Martin
I would be cautious about boxing because of possible injury. Thank you for your posts. Enjoy your playing
Have a great tour!
I liked this whole video but the last 3 minutes...wow! Why would someone put a young musician down!? I’ve been there too Mary. You are very inspiring!
My all-time musicians I could have lunch with not alive would be SRV, John Lennon, John Denver and Robert Johnson. Alive is you.
O-Dense... We aint all Dense. ;-) Ohthensa is closer. Thanks for the show last night, it was great seeing you live.
