When you passed the truck, that's all the convincing I needed. I had to laugh while bearing in mind all of the negative comments I've read about this car.
I went to the dealership yesterday, test drove 5 speed hatch and looked at the g4. I went with the 5 speed hatch se . I think it is plenty zippy enough got on the highway did 70-80 just fine. Cabin noise was not really bad, my wife has a high end pilot and i think it is no worse than that. For 9 grand and mpg this car is a steal. Of course this is my one day review. Thank you for these videos and your honesty it helped me buy this car.
Bought a cheap '14 for our son. I absolutely love driving the 5-speed, as you can cane the crap out of it, and still get 30 mpg! It's basically a '90s car in mechanical feel, as the Mivec is somewhat crude (like the older vtec), and gives a nice kick at 5500 rpm, then the engine cuts out too soon at 6500 rpm! Plenty quick in tight city driving and weaving in-out of traffic. Biggest benefit, you don't have to care it's so cheap!
Passes a car just like any other car. I hate when you hear people say ohI wouldn’t wanna pass someone or go on the freeway with this. Why??? Its a few seconds slower than other cars so what. They are loaded with features and super cheap plus they are reliable and have an amazing warranty! I loved my 2015 Mirage ES CVT and I love my G4 SE CVT. Another thing that bugs me is when these reviewers complain about engine noise or hard plastic interior. Yea like you say so what. Any tiny small car like this will have that and this car does not try to pretend to be more than what it is people who buy this know this!
chad haire To Each Their Own. Mirage Owners love their Mirages and Im quite aware of what the Mirage can and cannot do I have owned 2 brand new ones. Sure it was designed for third world countries Im well aware of that and yes its a city car like many other small cars l but to say it cant drive on the freeway hahahaha. How can I drive at that speed? I guess the 20K plus Mirages and Mirage G4s sold each year never get on an interstate, my bad.
chad haire 👍 Have you tested the new Accent and Rio? Just curious how they compare to the Mirage G4 since they are close to the same size and weigh just a few hundred pounds more. I have sat in both and I know the rear seat is very tight compared to the G4 but did not drive either of them. I like the look of the Accent Limited far over the Rio EX as it looks so basic and bland.
Perfect car for me, great on gas without being a hybrid!!!, not that expensive fix or get, I DON'T CARE ABOUT GOING FAST, the car is really naturally slow, love it, slow and steady wins the race, and besides, you go too fast, you make mistakes, that's all I really care about. And it even looks nice on the outside..I love it..I'm glad I stayed patient of looking for a car..now I know what i want.
@@kylemas2005 Edit: This comment is incorrect. The comoanies program the CVTs differently; don't buy Nissan CVTs In case people were wondering about the CVT, don't buy them lol. They are not reliable. Jatco makes them, and that company
The commercial reviews are brutal. I learned to drive on a 90 Toyota Corolla and it probably had around 80 horsepower. I like your honest review and there's something that this car has that other cars don't, simplicity at a great price. I don't want my simple car to be perfect, I want the quirks it's fun to have this, it gives a car character. Also I believe it's 72 months for 0% financing, a $12500 car would come out to about a $150 a month. Where are you going to get 50 miles to the gallon at this price with four wheels and roof, not to mention Android auto and air condition Holy Hell.
That's my exact sentiment regarding the 2014 Mirage I drove for 4yrs. It was far from perfect, but it was thrifty to drive, made me smile every time I looked at it (in Kiwi Green), and was plenty comfortable for my body.
Great review. An SE Mirage...with a manual. Rare bird! Mitsubishi only made that combination for one year: 2017. I have a '15 ES with a manual (ES was top-spec that year), and it has been fantastic for 100,000 miles.
I'm driving Hyundai EON here in Philippines 3 cylinder 800cc I got it brand new 2013 Up until now 2023 but still good no major issues just changed oil n change brake pad cleaning proper maintenance. That's why now me and my family migrating to US this year I'm still looking for a car like this 3c. Really like the millege and easy to maintain.
I Have this car. Yours has a few more options than mine does from the looks of it. But I got the 5 speed also and I do have a word of warning, don't try to pass while the AC is running. Turn that off before you pass like that. I do love the car though, the gas milage has won me over time and time again. 10$ a week is all I spend on gas for it. *Edit* Maybe 15$ a week depending on how much I run around.
Finally a positive review on a great little car. I agree that the 5 speed manual is the only way to go. The CVT transmission just doesn't have the durability or longevity that u get with the manual. Sadly it's very hard to find a 5 speed model as most dealers order the automatics on their lot. It's worth getting the SE model over the cheaper ES when looking for a 5 speed model, since the interior upgrades on the SE are nice. People are idiots that review this car as if it's supposed to be a car that cost 4 times as much. For the money, what equipment you get with it and over 50 mpg gas mileage this is a great car.
Mr M wow I didn't know that. That makes me very sad as that is the combo that I would be buying. Guess I'll have to look for a used version. I love the sunburst orange color.
Kenneth White yeah I am glad to have picked our cars up when we did. I would be okay with a base model for 8900 or so. But you give up a bunch of nice features.
The Mirage is built for three things: low cost, high fuel economy, and RELIABILITY. If you want anything else it will let you down. I bought one new in late '14. Just at 100,000 miles now, zero problems, 45 mpg.
Abdullah Mohammed The Mirage takes 3 quarts of oil basically. It's a drop more according to the manual but 3qts brings it to full so I call it 3 quarts.
I have a 2013 Mirage HB Auto, and its very kind to me, my pocket and able to do what i need it to do… affordable and comfortable transportation within Manila Streets. Maintaining it is also a Joy.. very affordable ..averaging 90 to 140 USD every 6mos in mitsubishi dealer car repairs shops (casas as we call it here). Yeah It has always been reviewed badly.. But this car works for me nicely and this review gives justice to the car and I share his sentiments on it ;)
I drive a 2016 golf sportwagen that is pretty loaded and is an awesome car. But it’s a $27000 car. I test drove a mirage with 5 spd. It was very decent for $9999. That’s what my dealer was selling them for. I did not pull the trigger because it was a base model. I want what u have. And for that price. Dealers discount the shit out of them. So as soon as I find one I am buying it. I love Mitsubishi products. My parents bought the first new Mitsubishi in my hometown in 1983. A Mitsubishi station turbo
COULDNT AGREE MORE. People like Doug Demuro think this is an abomination, but the mirage is the best kept secret. I got mine (the ES with every option) for 8k with 35k miles.... far better deal than any civic. Also, the cvt sucks. I never get above 40 mpg- it constantly needs to rev up, where the manual can stay down. The cvt has a lot of slop. Great video!!
CVT7 mates excellent with such a light weight and low powered car. If I was to roll the dice on a car design that could get 200k miles out of the original CVT7 it would be the Mirage. Certainly not cars like the Versa, Juke, or Versa Note which uses the same CVT.
I'm considering a 2017 used in 2019 for the base model with manual for $8.5k OTD. Not sure if it's a good deal, but the fuel economy is definitely appealing in terms of compatibility to a hybrid without all the extra electrical parts.
@@pryme2013 yea man, I remember driving my friends 2021 model with the manual and I loved it. I was saving really hard to buy a brand new manual mirage but they dropped the manual entirely even on the base model. And it's pretty much impossible to find a previous year that had one. I drove the cvt the other day and man what a wonky transmission that is. If it had like a 6 speed automatic then no big deal but that cvt ruins the entire car in my opinion.
Great review! So many payed for automotive "journalists" spreading fake news about this car. I would love to drive one of these one day, I like the "less is more" moto.
My old mustang V6 was louder than my little Mirage. And stop with the CVT hate. The Mirage CVT7 actually is reliable as hell and more efficient than the manual.
I have a 2017 sedan with a CVT. For gas milage, I've gotten up to 55 on the highways and interstates. I'm gonna modify the exhaust and see if I get an gains. If you pop it into Ds it can overtake just as great as manual. I think the manual needs a better shifter. The clutch is perfect but the shifter, not so much.
Sir, mirage has 300,000 motor and transmission, my 1999 mirage went 322000 miles, I gave it to my brother and he sold it a few years later with 396000 foe $315 and it was running fine.
this is the worst car on the market....horribly cheaply made from the tiny wheels to the cheap finishing in the trunk adn in the cabin horrid noise, little stability, not sturdy......just terribly made. that noise...... OMG...as Consumer Reports suggested, there is no conceivable reason to buy this car, better to get a superior USED car Mitsubishi are ranked terribly now......lots of superior used small cars out there, Kia soul, civic, corolla, on and on....
Love the real time review on the Mirage but I would go for the automatic simply because I can’t do a manual too well. I also live in a city dwelling so the manual would not work well.
I had a 91 geo metro 2 years ago i loved that car soooo much it was slow and ugly but it was good on gas and got me ware i needed to go untill someone hit me and totaled it. I had the geo and a 06 accord with a 5 speed and i love my geo way better. I will give this car a check out.
This car is meant to be practical for a first car or a runaround town car. the problem is people keep trying to compare it to the needs of the average driver or someone who has money for something better. id love to have the MPG of this car to run around town in. i have a E65 (BMW 750) and get like 7mpg city lol and i just bought a new passat to run about. not the greatest car but it gets the job done. (and saves money!!). trust me my 750 is 40k into performance mods, including a twin turbo kit, differential and trans build so better mpg and miles per tank were definitely needed. its a to each his own situation and will depend. For someones highschooler this would be a car which is definitely better than no car. Especially at the MRSP of these things. I think its cooler to have a 2022 mirage than an 08 BMW 750... until i hit the track lol. yall be blessed- no offense intended but remember the target market for a car like this before knockingi it
Actually saves money compared to electric. Test drove a Kermit green 2014 cvt for $5500 35,000 miles. You have to thrash the engine to get it to move and CVT sticks to 5000 rpm so sucks the fun out of shifting but it is very nimble and moves compared to the 60 hp 1978 Ford Fiesta 75 hp 1976 Vokswagen Rabbit and 70 HP 1982 Ford Escort and amazing it has auto temp, push button start, it's not that teeny inside and doesn't ride much worse than Fiesta did. Not a full size ride like Honda accord but gets you from A to B ok for around town and tolerable for highway
I was thinking about this car for my first car. I am currently learning to drive but I see most comments say the manual is better. I'm learning to drive in an automatic though. 😭
Driving the G4 it was nice. But I opted for the hatchback. Its black, 2021, Carbonite Edition. They rip on it because like the salesman and I agreed on. It doesn't have 500000000 cameras and 6000000 screens with 9000093990129 functions. Its a very simple car that you can just drive, fix, and enjoy. As a enthusiast I am quite proud driving this little thing around. Not only did I get my moneys worth and Im not paying a large fuel bill. I also just helped out K cars pull up in the US. Its not a sports car, it knows this and it never will be. Instead its a cheap little econ car to enjoy! But these reviewers go into it just like driving a sports car. They rot out their brains with BMWs. It kept up with traffic very well, was responsive and I didn't feel like I was vulnerable like someone gets in a small car. It gave me confidence and I definitely enjoyed zooming around. The most I can compare it to is a 90s-00s hatchback. Underpowered, simple, bare essentials, but fun as hell! I plan on eventually making this a little autocross nugget. I imagine it would be extremely fun! For now it will replace my Mercury Grand Marquis LS as a daily. While the Mercury becomes the beloved project car and restore. A side note, I got the CVT because I am not going to be the only person driving this. My 54 year old mother will be sometimes too. So I don't want her to have to be using a manual when she had past injuries on her hip. The CVT was responsive and I didn't feel that infamous "CVT lag" until I wanted it to go fast. But of course, the CVT is incredibly smooth and no fuss. Simulated two gear, but that is fine by me. I just drive it around in DDs (Drive Sport) and while it does nothing to power it does mod the throttle response. I saw a guy use a throttle hookup to make the throttle dynamic change depending on how you want to drive.
I have the CVT, it is a lil slow but I love it. But wow ai can tell how peppy the 5 speed is passing. I drove the 5 speed and it was about 3 seconds faster 0-60!
Mr M Oh yea it really does. I test drove the 5 speed and it was really peppy off the line from what ai observed about 3.5 secs fast to 60 mph than the CVT. Once the CVT is moving its good its just off the line punch like 0-20 mph is where ai notice it most but overall it does everything I want it too and love the MPG these cars give!!! Anyway nice videos you should keep them up as your Mirage ages would be cool to see more!!!
This car reminds me of my much beloved Geo Metro. Much nicer though. I almost bought one. I wonder if these can be pimped out maybe get a cold air intake etc.
joe b yeah it shifts good. There is a little feedback as it moves through the gears but not bad. It only has 3,900 miles though too. So I'd bet it will only get better with age.
Mitsubishi should bring back the Eclipse, Evo, or 3000GT tbh. Maybe make the 3000GT a hybrid-electric sports car since the 3000GT’s always been about having the latest tech. Too bad they won’t.
@@gif24gt60 accents are pretty reliable. I personally wouldn't own a versa but I'm sure other people like them. The Mirage is reliable and basic to repair.

Mitsubishi and other publications say the cvt is better because they want to promote the CVT's. In reality the manual gets better gas milage if driven correctly, makes the car drive better and will last longer with less maintenance. Plus it's cheaper to buy. The manual is absolutely the way to go unless you can't drive a stick.
@@dillonh321 There's lots of reliable used cars out there with automatics that are better than a PT cruiser. You could find a nice Corolla or Camry for less than 10k and they are super reliable.

We actually sold both and bought a minivan due to growing fam. they were awesome cars and I miss driving it. I would not hesitate to buy one again if needed.
I am Split still. I can buy a new Soul for 13 grand OTD. The base is quite nice. The left over 17 Mirage SE is $11 grand. Only 2k difference. Downside is 36 mpg average compared to 45+ mpg.
They have the same warranty which is nice...I think the Soul might be more "substantial" but I think Mitsubishi makes a better vehicle than Hyundai/kia company. Compare the options and see what's important to you. If you are looking at the 5 speed, then the Mirage is a great deal. Especially where the Soul base motor may be a little small for the vehicle. I still to this day have yet to hear people say, "I have 250,000 on my Kia." But I do hear that about Mitsubishi. Also, Mitsubishi makes several 3 cylinders over seas. So I think the 3 cyl would be reliable.
138 hp 1.6 liter 4 compared to a 78 hp 1.3 liter 3. Likely a Wash in terms of power to weight, both are not particularly powerful. The Kia likely has the Edge. 2 kids and a wife, the Soul is really big inside. So many things to consider, really. There has not been many Mirages in the states to know how they are by 200k, or if they can attain that reliably. I have read of one Soul with 200k, and several Rios from years past reaching over 200k, one on You Tube with 400k. ruclips.net/video/JKbeUhmXSiw/видео.html
Things I've noticed about the Mirage 1. Manual isn't really an "option" its required for the car to behave like its supposed too. 2. All the cars the auto journo's have tested have been CVT equipped. 3. For the price and for what it is, its DAMM HARD to beat 4. These things seem like they'd be an absolute riot to turbo, autocross, rallye, or just really wring out in stock configuration
I was on a road trip to Kentucky with someone and they had one of these it was 900 miles to get there and we only had to stop once for gas to there and once for gas to get back home I've driven other cars and trucks that far and speed hundreds of dollars in gas as well but with this little car I only spend 15$ to fill it lol

When you passed the truck, that's all the convincing I needed. I had to laugh while bearing in mind all of the negative comments I've read about this car.
It only weighs about 865kg so it doesnt need a big engine :)
You can't drive that Mirage ! I would've passed that truck easily with the slow CVT!
Thank you for these videos and your honesty it helped me buy this car.
jerry s That's awesome! Glad the videos helped out. Enjoy your great mileage.
9 grand, did you go Used, or a base model Mirage? The base SE is hard pressed to be under 11 grand. 9k for a base is really good!
Good choice
Hello, how can you guys get the base model under 10 grand? If I check out the mitsubishi website it's always between 13k-14k,
Bought a cheap '14 for our son.
The mirage has good features but it can't be driven on the freeway or any other road over 60 mph......it wasn't design to. It is a city commuter.
chad haire I drive the interstate each day at 70mph no issues. Its quiet stable on the interstate!
chad haire To Each Their Own.
I suspect those 20K Mirages never get on the interstate either..not for long.
chad haire 👍 Have you tested the new Accent and Rio?
You will like it I'm sure!
Manual is the way to go with this car !
It is actually kind of the opposite @@Kevin6t8
No, go with the CVT. It will hold up well over the years. Just ask Thai cab drivers who are easily hitting 175k miles on their original CVT7.
I have shopped around and cannot find an SE loaded with a 5 spd....all SE have the CVT.
@@kylemas2005 the manual will go longer, this drivetrain is very old.
@@kylemas2005 Edit: This comment is incorrect. The comoanies program the CVTs differently; don't buy Nissan CVTs
In case people were wondering about the CVT, don't buy them lol.
Aaron Costello we looked for these exact models. The SE with a manual.
THANK YOU! You are a real REVIEWER! NO BIAS! Good Work!
I have a 2018 Mirage absolutely love it considering I got it for under 10 Grand brand new it's a 10 out of 10...( manual base model)
Clarence 007 perfect car
I'm driving Hyundai EON here in Philippines 3 cylinder 800cc I got it brand new 2013 Up until now 2023 but still good no major issues just changed oil n change brake pad cleaning proper maintenance. That's why now me and my family migrating to US this year I'm still looking for a car like this 3c. Really like the millege and easy to maintain.
Good cars!
*Edit*
Maybe 15$ a week depending on how much I run around.
Yeah the ac cuts the passing power for sure.
@@yololol8868 14 cvt mirage owner here… this is true. And hills! Can’t have ac on and do steep hills.
Kenneth White they dropped the SE/manual combo for 2018 so anyone who wants that combo needs to find a 17.
Mr M so O yours is a 2017 SE with the 5 speed manual in what exterior color?
Kenneth White I have a black and wine red one. Watch part 3.
I had a 1979 Ford Fiesta 4 cylinder with the manual transmission. It had 67 horsepower. Got 38 mpg combined. This car looks fun.
Wow I am considering this car, tired of my 06 Ford fusion always breaking at 160k miles. Reliable car with good mpg sounds awesome
The Mirage is built for three things: low cost, high fuel economy, and RELIABILITY. If you want anything else it will let you down. I bought one new in late '14. Just at 100,000 miles now, zero problems, 45 mpg.
I bought a 2019 mirage yesterday. I would say to go for it bro. It's a big gas saver.
Just got my first oil change in my 2017 Mirage (ES 5sp), and washed and waxed it when I got home. Absolutely love this car.
Erik Mitchell It always makes the car feel "better" after all that doesn't it!! Nice
Erik Mitchell your car needs how many L from oil
You'd have to look up the capacity -- I'm not sure. The dealer does the oil change for free, so I don't worry about it!
Abdullah Mohammed The Mirage takes 3 quarts of oil basically. It's a drop more according to the manual but 3qts brings it to full so I call it 3 quarts.
My 17' Mirage is my favorite car out of all the cars I have owned.
Love my Mirage!
Johnny Mullet Yeah, it's a great car!
But this car works for me nicely and this review gives justice to the car and I share his sentiments on it ;)
You summed up the Mirage nicely.
Nice engine sound when he overtake the slow truck
carl alcoba yeah this 3cyl has a much better sound than your avg 4cyl.
The first thing I did was replace the tire with 185 75 14 for smoother ride, less chop, less noise and 10 percent increase in mileage
Steve Cihlar 10% increase in mileage too? Which tire did you go with?
What brand of tires did you put on?
did that negatively impact the MPG?
Great video. These are awsome lil cars. It does its job well and will run forever. I loved my 2015 Mirage and I love my 2017 Mirage G4 SE.
Thanks. Yeah they are kind of an unknown great car. Those that have them like them though
CVT7 mates excellent with such a light weight and low powered car. If I was to roll the dice on a car design that could get 200k miles out of the original CVT7 it would be the Mirage. Certainly not cars like the Versa, Juke, or Versa Note which uses the same CVT.
magnuscat we all know how the Nissan CVT fiasco has gone...
@@Chad-wb7du they do use the same cvt but it seems to be more reliable in the Mirage due to the mirage being a lot smaller and lighter.

@@drrider100 Yes it was. I miss the Galant.
Not likely since sedans have fallen out of favor.
I'm considering a 2017 used in 2019 for the base model with manual for $8.5k OTD. Not sure if it's a good deal, but the fuel economy is definitely appealing in terms of compatibility to a hybrid without all the extra electrical parts.
Yeah I wanted really good mileage without the hybrid complexity
It sucks that I can't find one with a manual especially that they dropped the manual in their 2023 model :(
Did they drop the manual all together now? That is a horrible move. The manual really woke this car up.
Awesome review mate. I’m getting mine in a couple of weeks.

Love the real time review on the Mirage but I would go for the automatic simply because I can’t do a manual too well. I also live in a city dwelling so the manual would not work well.
dressshoeguy Thank you. Either way the Mirage is a solid choice and returns fantastic mileage

At 2,020lbs the 87hp engine does not have allot of weight to move.
I think its cooler to have a 2022 mirage than an 08 BMW 750... until i hit the track lol.
yall be blessed- no offense intended
but remember the target market for a car like this before knockingi it
Actually saves money compared to electric.
Lots of people like their cvt mirage too!
You said it perfectly
I have the CVT, it is a lil slow but I love it. But wow ai can tell how peppy the 5 speed is passing. I drove the 5 speed and it was about 3 seconds faster 0-60!
K McKenzie yeah, the 5spd makes a difference in this car, or any small car I've driven.
K McKenzie im thinking about getting one but my wife doesnt drive standard,,,,,,, can she used the CVT all day long or ia juat highway???

Looks like it shifts nicely.
joe b yeah it shifts good. There is a little feedback as it moves through the gears but not bad. It only has 3,900 miles though too. So I'd bet it will only get better with age.
how have the mirages been? How is the heat and AC? Do you like the stereo? I have been unable to locate a 5 speed near me, as of yet.
Can you show us how to launch this car?
im amazed you did everything in the video with a manual car with one hand
Lots of miles and years behind a manual transmission
Nothing beats manuals on reliability and fun even on the slowest car you can have fun
What is the reliability like? Also can the manual easily handle 110 Kmh ?
Mitsubishi should bring back the Eclipse, Evo, or 3000GT tbh. Maybe make the 3000GT a hybrid-electric sports car since the 3000GT’s always been about having the latest tech. Too bad they won’t.
Great gas mileage! Stick shift is only way to go.

Is the CVT better or worse fuel economy wise?
It's a bit worse when the manual is driven wisely. If you look on sites where people track gas mileage the manual does better overall.

I kinda like the engine sounds... I love the triumph triples
Ya know!
I can't find a Mirage new or used with keyless entry/push button start. Did you special ordered yours?
2017 was the last year the manual hatch se had those options. I believe the current ones do to but not with a manual transmission
Things I've noticed about the Mirage
1. Manual isn't really an "option" its required for the car to behave like its supposed too.
2. All the cars the auto journo's have tested have been CVT equipped.
3. For the price and for what it is, its DAMM HARD to beat
4. These things seem like they'd be an absolute riot to turbo, autocross, rallye, or just really wring out in stock configuration
Great video, looks like Wisconsin. What is your other car?
I'm jealous of that SE trim with M/T. In Canada, we can only get the M/T in base trim 😔
In the United states last year for this combo was 2017. It is no longer offered.
Can you drive Uber with this?
Good and honest review
I was on a road trip to Kentucky with someone and they had one of these it was 900 miles to get there and we only had to stop once for gas to there and once for gas to get back home I've driven other cars and trucks that far and speed hundreds of dollars in gas as well but with this little car I only spend 15$ to fill it lol
Yeah, that's the best! Might not get there in a tomb quite luxury ride but it sure is a cheap trip
