Growing up in a small S.C.town, I joined the NAVY in 70 and served in a Recon Squadron out of N.A.S.KEY WEST. We served on board U.S.S. ENTERPRISE, U.S.S.RANGER, and the U.S.S. CONSTELLATION. all 9 month tours in the West Pac Vietnam. I ended up with 3 years 2 months and 12 days at sea. The NAVY Aircraft Carriers are the total package when it comes to complete living on board. Had to get used to my top bunk was midship right under #3 arresting cable. So I was able to place my hand up above my head on the flight deck steel, and feel the tail hook slam the deck and hear the deafening pull of the cable being stretched to the max and the jet engines powering down. When we were "On the Line" in the Gulf of Tonkin, we flew 24/7 sorties. RVAH-5 ROCKS!!!

Oh those endless flight ops. Saw 12, 14, 16, even 20 hour days on the USS Midway. In your "off time" you could eat, wright a letter, shower, get to the ships store etc, then grab a generous 2-6 hrs of sleep with the time left over. Per hour- about 1/2 minimum wage, and loved it!

I got a chance to go on board the USS RANGER CV-61 When it came to port in
Vancouver B.C. Canada June 1992 . WOW JUST WOW walking tour with my navy escort
I could feel the emence power of the RANGER even as it sat at anchor in Vancouver
all of the sailors I spoke to were polite & proud of their ship .They loved our city
even got a taste of navy chow ( B.L.T. with fries ) really good ! wish I could have got some pictures
but they took my little Kodak camera when I boarded ( yes they gave it back to me when I left the ship )

Rick, Thanks for the excellent video. I enjoyed every minute of it. It sure brings back some great memories of flight deck duty. I served from 1958 to 1961 and my duty station was NAS Norfolk. I was assigned to Helicopter Squadron Seven and we were flying HSS-1N Antisubmarine choppers. I was a green shirt and an Aviation Electronic Technician specializing in Tacan and other navigation and communication equipment. I was also tasked with the upgrades and modifications of all type electronic equipment in our aircraft. I was a Second Class Petty Officer when I decided to not reenlist and to go to college. That was a mistake I have often regretted. I could have probably made Chief in my next 4 years. I served on the USS Valley Forge and the USS Randolph. My last cruise before separation was to be the down range recovery team for Alan Shepard's first suborbital flight. We were not the primary recovery team but were stationed 70 miles beyond his projected splash point. We were there in case he overshot his splash point. A bit of humor, years later he was here in Mobile, AL to sign his book Moon Shot and I had a copy so went to have it autographed and mentioned to him that I was downrange in the USS Randolph in case he over shot and his comment was "I didn't need your A.. did I"?
Thanks again for a super video. Made my day. I just had my 80th birthday this past week.

Beautiful video, Rick S! I'm not surprised there are 1 million +/- comments! I'm a retired Navy helo pilot, but my career was on Cruisers, Destroyers, Frigates & Supply ships. My final deployment before retirement was on one of the last conventionally powered carriers, USS Constellation (CV-64) in 2001, in a staff position. You may realize how lucky and privileged you were to have this visit when you filmed this: as a ship's crew member, you don't quite get the DV treatment, although you do see a lot of the ship that visitors miss. For better or worse! In my position, I had no duties above decks and spent the vast majority of my time in artificial lighting. I came home paler-skinned than when I started! You showed me things that I had no time or reason to see. My stateroom was directly underneath the # 2 wire, which sounds horribly unlucky, but my work always ended a few hours after flight ops finished so I hardly noticed. I wish my father were still alive (well, that would make him pretty ancient by now), but he would've loved to see this video. Both from the perspective of an old WWII Destroyer 'snipe', and as the father of a Navy pilot. Great job, and thanks for sharing with the world.

Great Video Rick S. Very comprehensive!! Brought back many cherished memories. I was on the USS Lincoln, CVN 72 in 2004 working on a the movie "Stealth" and, like yourself, was truly amazed and humbled by the experience. Spending 10 days on the ship allowed me to really get a good look at the workings of a aircraft carrier and her crew. We were treated as royalty by every sailor and officer as if we were their superiors, which was clearly not the case. We slept in officers quarters and dined in the ward room. We had almost complete access to the ship except for the reactor room and other designated areas. We worked at all hours of the day on various schedules to accommodate production and the Navy. The food sucked, even in the ward room, but the experience made up for it ten fold. I seriously could not do the job of those kids do, for they are truly exceptional human beings, serving our country by sailing in the Navy and work on extremely an amazing ship as a aircraft carrier is . I am truly blessed to have been so fortunate to have had the opportunity to experience that in my life.

Really great Navy ! I wish they could have shown how many other things were going on (24 hrs a day) besides aircraft on the ship. There is everything from operations, communications, propulsion, food services 24/7, Detachment of U.S. Marines, field day of course, and so much more. But I suppose that's for another day and much of that other stuff is classified and cannot be seen on TV. Thanks Navy, I'v very proud of all of you. BTW, my grandson-inlaw is currently teaching those pilots in training how to land upon those ship and during my 22 yrs I collected 5 thousand + hours Navy flight time.

I served aboard two aircraft carriers, USS Kittyhawk CV-63 and USS America CV-62 during the late 80’s and early 90’s working on the flight deck as a red shirt (aviation ordinance). I can’t recall ever seeing anyone not having something to do with flight ops being allowed on the flight deck during flight ops. That is awesome they gave that to you. Controlled chaos is what we called it. It’s an awesome experience. As you mentioned, being on the flight deck during flight ops is one of the most dangerous places to be. My hats off were always to the green shirts who were responsible for catapults. Very dangerous and tiring work. Thanks for sharing this. Best to all the current men and women serving today.
