I’m glad to see a review address the nonsensical magic system, because I could not make heads or tails of it. The whole book read like baby’s first dark academia and needed about three more years of rewrites.
I gave it a 3 as well. And I really feel like more book would have helped. Fleshing out the relationships is very much needed, and then after the high speed reveals at the end it felt like an end of a 2nd act of a story, not the end of a first book. If there were 50 more pages of interactions, descriptions of the research, and then 100 pages more progression and a true galvanizing moment at the end, I'd be much kinder.
Tried reading it. Read like a Maas fanfic in dark academia aesthetic with none of the essence of DA… precisely for the reasons you mentioned - superficial character relationship building, subpar prose and pacing, and honestly the high expectations from all the hype around it.
You summed up how I feel about this book really accurately. I don't usually tend to look at reviews after I've read a book, but this one left me feeling a little hollow. I'm so relieved that it's not just me... Also, I found that I was more interested in learning about Atlas. I suppose the teasing is generally part of the appeal in trilogies, but I was certainly more intrigued by that story line than our main characters. I don't think I'm ready to talk about the magic system. I haven't quite processed what I think about that.
I had to DNF it. It just wasn't my cup of tea. I was so disappointed after seeing so many people rave about it. I felt like so much was missing from the actual story and it was just kind of annoying. And all the telling got on my nerves; I like being immersed in a story.
Whew this book is so good in concept. And I think I liked it more than I would've if I went into it without knowing certain things about it going in. I really liked the philosophical stuff and the ways different characters perceived certain concepts but I think that's about it. Or all I can say without spoiling.
love those nails! this sounds like one of those books where the premise is fascinating...but the execution is lacking. i feel like that's lots of books these days. i don't mind pretentious writing, when it's a style for a character, but when it's the narrator that gets obnoxious fast.
I always get snervous when people talk about this book lol! I can't wait to reread this book. Was already a fan of OB so read the original version when it came out and remember liking it a lot, but I wasn't as well read as I am now. So who knows! Love her stuff usually though.
You were far more generous than I was, giving this book a 3 star. I gave it a 1. Nothing ever happened in this book. It was nonsensical, pointless and god awful to read. I read it all and I was like, "Yikes...." Nope, nope, nope. Nothing made sense in this book. Nothing...
I’ve been on the fence about this one and am even less interested now that you’ve talked about how unlikable all the characters are. That’s a big anti-buzzword for me. :/
I’m reading this now and the writing is killing me. Like ok be pretentious because of the type of book but it’s so poorly done. It’s like she’s writing with a thesaurus but doesn’t use the words quite right and then writes overly long, poorly constructed sentences. It’s like a bad first draft written by a 7th grader who wants to seem smart. 😬
omg thank you for commenting on the writing !! only on the first couple of chapters & its making me feel like im the dumbest person alive 🫣

Just finished it. I enjoyed listening to your thoughts on the book.

Finally finding someone voicing how I'm feeling about The Atlas Six.

Exactly my words...
At the summary of it, it reminds me of The Magicians, which I hated. Gonna pass on this
Just finished this book and it was such a drag! The ending was not worth the wait whatsoever. There was no plot at all. Also the magic???? Where???
_FINALLY_ someone who realizes how mediocre this book is!!!
I haven't watched it yet; I'm scared of what you thought. LOLOL
I love your nails!!!
thank you
I agree - 2.5.

I tried with this book and had to DNF it because the characters were so insufferable.
