What kind of protective gear do you use? I would like to get Kendo armor, but it's so expensive.
looks like fairly typical fencing hoods and gloves and a healthy amount of caution.
Charlie in black is using the Red Dragon 350n mask, gloves, and arm protectors. I'm the one in blue, and I have a prototype 800n mask and overlay that'll soon be available from Tempus Swords, Thokk Blademaster gloves, and Red Dragon arm protectors.
As this sparring bout was controlled and measured, we weren't wearing jackets. But for an all-out bout, jackets need to be worn. Even at this pace with gear on, we still ended up with plenty of bruises.
Avoid the Kendo gear, it's too damn expensive and designed for shinai. Stick with the HEMA protective gear. It'll allow you to use wooden, steel, and synthetic weapons.
The Red Dragon gear is seen as the entry-level equipment, but it is reasonably priced and offers a good level of protection for the price point.

Please don't use Kendo bogu as they're not suitable for anything outside of Kendo, especially the mask. The holes are too big so any form of face thrust could go through easily with a non shinai practice sword
