I found this video very interesting - indeed all your videos on Bakhtin are very informative. I am an English Literature academic based in the UK and my area of speciality is the study of Bakhtin. I am going to recommend to my students that they watch this series of videos.

Thats really helpful, many thanks. But i think you should talk about the concept of 'Grotesque' along with carnivalesque, because that too goes along with this.

Carnival and Carnivalesque, there is a distinction. Carnivaleseque is what survived as carnival was turned into a more or less artificial literary genre during the Renaissance. That is, authentic carnival based on folkloric humour was banished and replaced by revival of interest in genres based idealism: Greek and Roman epic poems, philosophical treatises and so on, genres that can also be described as monologic. The carnivals became more orderly as authorities favoured more structured parades, processions and marches. Carnivals existed well before the Middle Ages, universally across cultures. However the Middle Ages was perhaps the last period of genuine carnivals in Europe before it was transformed into the carnivalesque. Alice in Wonderland seems to be a good example of a novel that is carnivalesque but is not actually a carnival.
