I do not believe it is exaggeration or meaningless hyperboli to say these videos by David Hurwitz over the past 3 years will be treasured and cherished by countless generations to come. His personal influence on my own music experience is too long to convey, but to mention a few, the Handel opera talk, Bruckner insights admiration of naxos projects, Sandor Vegh Mozart output and his Haydn contributions, which I have already commented to him, in the symphony crusade especially, are on a par with Robbins Landon. Bravo David Hurwitz.

This is my favorite box set of chamber music. Not only is so much of the repertoire fantastic but the playing, despite the personnel changes, remains THE gold standard. Menahem Pressler was such a brilliant chamber music pianist for so frigging long.

All credit too to the Philips engineers who consistently created a beautiful, balanced sound.

Such value to own 60 reference recordings at one go! This certainly sounds interesting and I'll try to look out for it if I end up holidaying in Japan.

Hey Dave, couldn't agree more with you on this pick of the Piano Trios by the Beaux Arts Trio. As a matter of fact i can say i did a blind test whereby I checked at the works were you would be naming the reference recording and without looking to your choices thusfar i had the same recordings chosen for almost 94% of the cases (i think this can't be coincidence). You said a very important thing here in my opinion where you noted that reference recordings by reference artists can guide people to repertoire they normally would neglect just on the basis of their status as reference artist/recording artist. PS a very big thank for the recent months for renewing my interest in works such as Respighi's Metamorphoseon, The chamber concertos by Holmboe and your excellent recording suggestion of The Midsummer Marriage conducted by Gardiner. Already listened 8 times to it recently. By the way are there reference recordings by the Operas Julieta and Greek Passion from Martinu and Edipe Roi by Enescu? Keep up the good work Dave!!! greetings from Belgium

There are no reference recordings for those other operas. We're very lucky that there are recordings at all (and good ones at that).

No Juliette, but the Greek Passion with Mackerras? At least it's close imho.

I couldn't agree more. As far as Julietta is concerned, I stick with the old Krombholc recording on Supraphon. Greetings from Belgium.

The contribution by the Beaux Art Trio can't be praised highly enough! I missed this box by a whisker - had to choose between it and the Quartetto Italiano-box...when my finances recovered...bfuwf, where the Beaux Art box gone with the wind, and since then no longer available! C'mon Universal, give it some new life!
Among the even more modest string trio ensembles, might not the Grumiaux Trio aspire to reference status? If not, at least their recording of the Mozart Divertimento (String Trio) K563, for certain must be THE reference recording - and a strong contender for the prize of being the most beautiful music ever written and performed (well, I know, there is that late Mozart string quintet of course...but apart from that....)!

This is really great. And Pressler is such a role model. I‘m so happy that I was able to hear him playing live.

Love them! There's a playlist of this set on Spotify! (Hummel recordings don't seem to be available in the US though).

Do you think I Musici is also one of those reference ensemble?

This turned my interest on to which major composers' trios they had missed, and the answer is: precious few! And if they did, mostly the composer was major but the trios probably not so much (César Franck, for instance - nice to hear, good to have, but major? not really).
Probably the one who I'd have wanted them to record most was Berwald. His trios are big works, and are sadly nowhere near the standard repertoire even in the niche market of piano trios. At least we have the Marco Polo versions. But I would have loved to have heard them by the Beaux Arts Trio in their excellent sound.
Category "nice to have" would feature Turina, Magnard, Lekeu, Rubinstein, Goldmark, Taneyev, Onslow, Gouvy, Martucci, Gretchaninov, and - oh, yes, please - Juon. All in all, they did get all the big guns. Magnificently.

I reckon I have over half of the discs in this set courtesy of Philips Duo. Quartetto Italiano is another reference group I would think.

I saw it in Australia for about $300 a couple of months ago. Couldn’t pull the trigger - too much. Keeping an eye out for it 😊

I would LOVE to hear Casals and Cortot play with THIBAUDET! What a contrast of characters!
Menahem Pressler was such a lovely and modest personality. When I approached him to sign my CDs of BAT, he asked me, "You love piano trios?" If I did not, I certainly do now!

Beaux Arts Trio STILL OWN the Haydn Trios. I keep looking for newer ensembles and... nope... they just don't match the warmth and affection that the Beaux Arts bring to Papa Haydn.
