Restoration Old Rusty CUTLASS

- Hi! Today there is a very rare restoration of the Khevsuri cutlass . Khevsurian dashna is a universal thing that combines the properties of a knife, dagger and broadsword. The sizes were different. Practically, dashnas were made from broken saber and broadsword blades. Today, this item is rare. Well, I'll try to restore this item.
So, the handle. To disassemble it, I used a file, ground the rivet on the back of the handle. The handle is made of deer, buffalo and brass horns, which is typical for that region and time. I carefully and slowly removed every detail from the tang of the blade.
I cleaned the rust of the guard and blade with a sandblaster, after which I found the stamp "gourda" - this means that this object was most likely made of a broadsword, judging by the geometry of the blade.
After cleaning, I lightly sanded the blade and oiled it. Then the handle. I corrected all the details on sandpaper. I sealed up all the cracks in the details, and additionally carved out the details that were missing from the horn. Added brass parts as well.
It was not possible to re-rivet, so I added a mechanical connection on the thread. I did not use glue when assembling the handle, and I was striving for this.
The scabbard is the same as that of the broadsword, only short. The style is in brass with characteristic decorations. The scabbard was covered with medium leather. The fittings are made of brass. The blade was sharpened on sandpaper and a leather belt. I made a test that you will definitely like. Don't forget to share this video.
Sincerely, Alex. Thanks for attention!
Good luck and health to everyone! With best wishes, Alex!

That was smart with the Sanding Sponges in the vice! I’ll have to try that. I personally like your comments. Don’t worry about it. It’s better with some insight here and there. 👍 picking up a sandblaster this week. Can’t wait for a few projects I’ve got lined up. :)
Yes. And all you need is to place new sand paper sheets between the sponges.
Thank you, yes, I came up with this method of sanding probably a month and a half ago with the help of two sponge sandpapers.
What a nice restauration. To me, being a non-connaisseur of the local styles of weapons, it looks credible.
You’re not only a craftsman but, an innovative one also. Thankyou for allowing me to follow along with you. And your endeavors
Yet again, one fantastic restoration. Saving a piece of history. Outstanding. But I miss the BEEP, BEEP! Keep up the great works.
Fantastic how you restored that cutlass to good condition. It looks much better and it cuts like a knife too. You also made a new scabbard for it, and it, too, is well made. Excellent work in those areas.
Thank you!
Amazing work again! So much detail in the scabbard. The sword reminds me of a little messer...
From the number of plasters you had, looks like it fought back a bit!
Yes, you're right, he wasn't particularly friendly)) Thank you
Great job on restoration Caucasian broadsword blade
Screws and tools ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks
As usual Alex, you did a very good job. Oh and beep, beep !! 🙂👍
Your comments are very good, I like that.
A unique item! thanks a lot for the interesting video.
As always you outdid yourself, great save on knife.just continue doing what you do best and carry on,can’t wait for the next project.be safe my friend 😎😎😎👍👍👍
I did not know that Georgians used cutlass's! Very fine work on restoring that multi- layered hilt!
Hello, not cutlass - caucasian dagger. You can see that blade restorations on my channel too. welcome ^_^
@@ScrewsAndTools That is what video title called it! My appologies for the mistake. It does look simular to a cuttlass, but it must be a four sided blade.
@@annettemalaski1967 ^_^ , it's okay, it's called "dashna" here, it's made from a piece of a broadsword
I definitely like the comments. Maybe you could do more. Awesome work.
Your skills with the accessories, leatherwork, metal decoration and engraving are getting better and better and adding much value to your work.
Glad to read, thanks!

Thanks Zou)
Superb work, running through so many different skills. Your patience and talent has no bounds.
Beautiful restoration
It's almost the sabre video I've been hoping for. I enjoyed watching the work on the hilt. I think the scabbard was actually the star of this video. I liked seeing how you made all the brass fittings by hand. 👏😄
P.S. I just purchased an antique shashka for my collection!😁It should arrive by February 1st!
Hello! Thank you! Wow congratulations. can you then show me? In instagram of facebook
Sorry, I'm not on any social media. But, I can tell you it's a Persian M1891/09. It's Russian made but has Arabic writing on it.
As always beautiful work. I liked the sand paper sponges trick. That will save my arm. I enjoyed the voice over. Loved your tunic as well. Beep beep.😊
Another great job👍
That is super job it looks really lovely and gorgeous. 👍
Thank you Alan ^_^
It is wonderful to see how your skills and technique have matured over the years. VERY well done restoration, Sir. Much respect and best regards.
Thanks!
Capolavoro! Come al solito! Luca, Italy.
Nice as always! Interesting blades!
Thank you!
"The tang is broken." I love it.
Another fantastic restoration my friend. Your workmanship is outstanding and the finished piece looks amazing. Thank you for sharing your video with us. Regards from your friend in Australia 🇦🇺, Rob T.
Hello Rob! Glad to read ^_^
You were so EXCITED and bouncing while using the sand machine. Congrats on the new purchase. I am very happy for you das bedanya
Thanks ^_^ yes its really good tool but I use it not often
You got a really good patina on the brass.
That's a sweet restoration. Sick, but in the good way.
Great job Alex i enjoy every video Say hello from Venezuela happy monday 🙏🤗🇻🇪👍🏻
Wow! So far! Thank you!!
Well Done! 👍👍👍
I like the added voice in your videos and you do an amazing job especially with the scabbard work
Thanks!
That was a great video as always. I liked that you explained what you were doing and the beep beep at the end! Thanks, Alex!
Thank you so much ^_^
Very nice! I really like the voice over!
The sanding sponges in the vice is a great idea!
Thank you, yes, I came up with this method of sanding probably a month and a half ago with the help of two sponge sandpapers.
Otlichnoye video! Bud'te zdorovy, moy brat!
Cool blade & great restoration video:)
Thank you mate ^_^
Helpful hint:
When I make a hard sheath like this. I place a small strip of thin leather inside on one side. This keeps it quiet, and it holds the blade securely. Excellent job as always friend. BEEP BEEP!
Magnificent job !
Such skill and it is worth it ,these Sword's are outstanding.
Beautiful restoration 😍😍
Thank you!
Second comment (it helps with the algorithm) 🙂 Sewn leather in scabbards (usually using the exact ladder stich you used) are pretty standard in Western European blades, the main difference is that the seam usually goes along the back, not along the edge. Usually sewn in wet leather, so when it dries it contracts and leaves a very taut covering. The part of covering the seam in wax I hadn't seen before, seems a nice trick.
Thanks! Well, I wasn't sure, it's just that when I learn something new or come up with something, I always try to share it with you.
I will probably watch the video a million times 🔥
^_^
I love the format!!!
Thanks!
Very beautiful restoration and skillful demonstration as always sir.
Very nice work! I like the audio commentary, maybe you could also add some brief explanations of the chemicals and metal treatment processes that you use.
Thanks for feedback!
Great work!! Congratulations!!
Thank you!
The voiceover is very good. Sometimes I watch restoration videos with the sound off (at work lol) so it's good for me that essential information is written on the screen and voiceover can provide additional trivia for when I rewatch/watch with sound.
Thank you! Copy that ^_^
Well done as always 👌
Thank you mate ^_^
Another stunning restoration!
Very nice work as always. The blade reminds me of a Cutlass.

Nicely done, comrade. Just the best on the best 👌🏻 greetings from 🇲🇽🙋♂️
Thank you!
Very good work from UD, when I was 11 years old that's how I made sheaths for small knives, but I didn't have a TV, let alone the Internet, no place where I got that idea.
Thanks ^_^
Another awesome restoration video, particularly loved how you clamped 2x sanding pads in the vice to clean the blade. Best wishes from here in the UK
Thank you so much! Yes, I came up with this method a couple of months ago and it's really very effective)
Hello Alex, all I can say is this is a masterpiece! And the details on the scabbard Beautiful! And taking the time and care to protect the stitching of the leather Genius ! Truly a beautiful job from start to finish. As always the very best to You and Yours from Brian in Southern California. P.s I very much like the commentary!
Hello Brian! Thank you so much!!! Best wishes
Another fine video Alex. I like the occasional comment here and there. I noticed your editing is also getting more advanced. Keep up the good work my friend
Cheers,
Ian
Hi Ian! Yes, working on a video takes no less time than physically or mechanically. Thanks
