Thanks Russel. I've looked at a number of videos to learn how to do breakout rooms, including ones produced by Zoom, and yours was the ONLY one that showed me how to go into advanced settings to turn on the breakout room option.
I tried Breakout Rooms today, and it worked like a charm. I could go from one group to the other by Joining their rooms to find out if they're doing fine. It's like in a physical classroom. I got them to watch a video first. After their discussion, I got them to write their thoughts in Padlet about how the movie began (Room 1) and ended (Room 2), and got them to comment or rate each others' work. Great stuff. The kids love it. Just sharing :-)
Thanks for leaving another comment, Kevin. It can work really well like you describe. If you treat that part of a 'live' session like you would a physical classroom, where you would watch a video, then set up a task, group them and then monitor, joining breakout rooms in that way, should be effective. It's only when the task or instructions are not so clear, that students could be in a room, feeling clueless or not knowing what to do. Tell them that you going to join each of their rooms, too, if needed. I'm sure the kids love it when you just pop in and say something! Russell.

While students were in their respective rooms, one of them asked me a question and a window pops up to inform me who the student was and whether I would like to go into that room. Tonight I will try to avoid that empty dark feeling
Ester, that honestly does not make sense. Once you are in a breakout room, you are separate from other people and should only hear the people in your room. That is really odd. I have never heard of that before. Might be a good idea to let Zoom know.

Russell - great video. Quick Question. What if you want to assign students automatically, but you want to have one specific person (as a 'lead', for instance) in each room. Can you make such a manual assignment, and dedicate them as a 'host' or a 'lead' for that breakout room?

Hi Russell, as a learning and development consultant who now needs to deliver remote training I'm finding your videos extremely helpful - thanks so much. Can I ask if you have a large group - say 20/30 delegates, how do you ensure the powerpoint screen remains visible with all the thumbnails on there? Thanks again Jude
Fantastic! Judy, for larger groups you might want to consider running a webinar (pro versions+) but on a free account i would share your whole screen but don't run the slide show. I do this whenever I record a PowerPoint using SnagIT or screencast-o-matic. With breakout rooms, you can either share a screenshot of a slide for participants to work on in the rooms or send the actual ppt before assigning the rooms. Hope that helps and gives you some more ideas. As always, there are workarounds. Russell.
Thanks Russell, I think the answer will be to cap my numbers at around 10. Still the question would be do the thumbnails obscure the slides? Don't get me wrong - not slide heavy but I will need some. is there a way to just have the pp with the chat available at the side? @@ttvRussell
I'm going to start tutoring students online. I'll work one on one with some students, and work with a small group as well. This video was so helpful. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us teachers.
Hi Russell, Thanks so much for making our jobs in these moments easier. I've been following you since I saw you at ACEIA in Seville some years ago now. Thanks for sharing your knowledge from the bottom of heart indeed. Now, 2 questions for you that I haven't been able to sort it out. 1. How do you ban students in breakout rooms to move at their will from one room to another? You know that teens find out things really fast. 2) Have you ever heard of openboard? It's a Swiss app that can be adjusted to Zoom. I am still studying its functions. The thing is that as you are always ahead in terms of state-of-the-art tech, I thought you might've done something about it. Take care and hope to hear from you. HUGE thanks!
Hi MissPaulaFunEnglish. Thanks for the memory you shared. I'm really glad these videos are helping people. Students should be able to move to another breakout room once they have been assigned. However, the host (teacher) can remove them or send them back to the main room. Participants don't really have that option, but they can take themselves back to the main room. I am going to deal with security issues in my next Zoom tutorial. I have not heard of Openboard. If you think it works well well with Zoom then let me know more and I might investigate. Thanks, Russell.
@@ttvRussell Cool, thanks for your reply. I do believe openboard is really useful, and the good thing is that it can be integrated with Zoom. In fact, you don't need to be sharing or unsharing your screen the whole time (that's just ONE of the functions I've discovered). There are many other great things about it, such as sharing videos, pictures, surf the web within Zoom. If you have the chance to look into it, I'm sure you'll find many more things than me ;)
Thanks for this great video. I have a couple of questions. 1. Can I create more than one breakout during a zoom meeting if I want different numbers of people to interact? 2. Sometimes I have "unassigned" people that remain in the main room. What is causing that? Thanks
No idea, you don't have to make all the break out rooms equal. You can create the rooms automatically and then manually move people around or just manually create the rooms. once ready start the session.
I am new in my position and have my first networking meeting to setup for Wednesday. Someone suggested we do break out rooms so your video was super helpful...excited to learn more so I subscribed. Thanks!

Thank you for this very helpful video. Maybe you can help with one question: I film with my cell phone when I use Zoom and use a Rode Wireless Mic which I connect to the phone. That gives me a good film and audio quality. I also work with a laptop by my side to see the chat. However, I cannot hear my students in this way which makes it hard to interact while they are in the breakout rooms. Do you have any idea how to solve that problem? Thank you so very much and best wishes!
@@ttvRussell Thank you so much for getting back to me. The Rode Wireless Mic I use only serves as a microphone but not as earphones unfortunately. I connect it to my phone and do not really see what other tool I would need in order be able to use earphones at the same time. Maybe you have an idea what I could use instead so I have the possibility to hear my students and speak to them at the same time. Thank you so much for your very helpful videos!
Thanks for this--it's helpful. One suggestion for your graphics overlay--the red arrow which points to the right is misleading until one realizes it is not actually supposed to be directing one's attention toward something on the right-hand side of the screen, it is merely being used as an attention-getting banner. It would work better to get rid of the "point" of the arrow, leaving it as a banner. The yellow dot is great for grabbing the audience's attention; however it occludes what whatever it covers. Instead, set it to a higher transparency so that the text or icon it is covering can still be seen. Thanks again!

Hi. Very informative video. I am setting up Zoom for our church prayer session. We have several breakout rooms with a leader in charge. Any worshippers in the main room who wants to have private time with the leaders for prayers are then assigned to a room manually. Can I share my computer audio with the breakout room? If not, if I enable the leaser to share the screen, can they share the screen with audio in the private room?
When people are in breakout rooms, they are in a different room and you can't your sound with them unless you too join the room to then chat with them. Does that make sense?
Thx Russell this better than ZOOM's demo. You touched on Screen Share during breakout which i was finding difficult to resolve....However, if the host is doing a screen share, like a PPT, and then during the presentation sends everyone to a breakout session, can they still view the hosts screen share? Like an activity question that the participants need to refer to during their breakout discussion.Currently, i am asking participants to do a screen grab of my activity and then go into a breakout session. Can you please address this. thanks in advance.
Raj, when students are in breakout rooms they are in totally different Zoom rooms. So whatever you want them to share in their breakout rooms, you need to send them in the chat and then to open. When they are in the break out rooms they will then be able to share what you want them to share. More free videos here www.teachertrainingvideos.com/Zoom

QUestion: When you (as the host) are sharing your screen, can the users still see it once they are sent to their rooms? Also, can they annotate the screen when in the rooms? FInally, this is not related to the video, but the "pause share" doesn't work in my zoom. I can click it and it tells me the share is paused, but it actdually isn't...the students can still see everything. ever heard of this problem? T han you so much RUssell!
Hi Liz. That's a good question. As far as I understand you can't keep sharing YOUR screen to all participants when they go into their Breakout rooms. They can share theirs, though. However, you can share your screen when you join one of the rooms. Alternatively, you can take a screenshot and share this in the chat with participants before they get assigned to the rooms. Here is my video specifically about screen sharing: www.teachertrainingvideos.com/zoom-screen_sharing_tutorial I'm not sure why the Pause share option is not working for you. Sorry for the delay in responding.
Hi Liz, the 'Pause share' button pauses what they can see on your screen while you start searching for another document. They won't see the guts of your desktop or folders etc. while you are looking. It keeps it tidy (same paused image of screen) until you are ready to reveal your new doc or screen image. I hope that helps.
Yes of course you can do a quiz, but not with Zoom itself. Use Zoom to share screen or share a link to an external quiz, such as Kahoot! or Google Forms. Here's an idea. Watch this and get learners or participants to do a quiz in Kahoot! by using their mobile phones. ruclips.net/video/ex8Hnl94IQE/видео.html or take part in a quiz where participants share their screens and questions on a document or video. Remember to turn on the 'play computer sound' in Zoom. See here: ruclips.net/video/h4wu1CYEIRo/видео.html
Thanks! Can't wait to try breakout rooms! Will practice with my nieces :) I do have one question: Does the chat remain active in the breakout rooms?? So if I want to add a link to the chat for students in the breakout rooms to access, can I do that?? I'm a little concerned about kids sharing other things on their screen when unsupervised.
Hi Russell, i have been watching most of your videos and they are super helpful. I need your help in this - I could not record the sessions in the main and breakdown rooms separately. The recording only happens in whichever room I join. How can I record the meetings in all the breakout rooms? Thank you!
Hi Manju. I don't believe you can record every breakout room. Zoom does record different videos such as speaker view, but generally follows the host around. However, if you give permission to others to record then one person in each room could record what goes on. But tricky to manage and instructions would need to be clear. Check settings before or during the meeting.
You're very welcome! I have some new stuff coming out very soon. It might be worth signing up to the newsletter on my website www.teachertrainingvideos.com/sign-up.
Quick question: I want my students to be able to have a document open INSIDE the breakout room. Usually this is a slide from my PPT, so they can discuss the task together. How can i do this? Is there a way to show my PPT slide in the breakout rooms? Or a way to copy something from the main session to the breakout room whiteboard?
Hi Chris. Quick answer: Apart from giving them a link to the PowerPoint online, the best thing is get them to take a screenshot of that slide before you go in. If all the students are going to discuss the same document or slide you can share this via the chat or get them to take a photo or screenshot first. Alternatively, you can join each of the break out rooms and share your screen and the slide / document that way, but that would take more time as you can only join one room at a time. You can now share files in the chat... so you could take the screenshot first, then share that image in the chat before assigning the rooms. Hope that helps.
@@ttvRussell Does this mean I cannot send them a Doc o picture to the breakout room or to a specific person and he/she can share it in his break out.. Very nice video, thank you. I have one question. I am using the cvs file to schedule participants before the meeting. Do you know if I can schedule more than one sets of breakout rooms in the course of a meeting, or if I have to schedule multiple meetings to have different breakout rooms? Thanks.
Russell you are my hero, guiding me so extremely well structured and understandable through ZOOM!!! Thank you so much! I have one question I didn't find an answer to (yet): Can students in breakout rooms record their exercise (for ex. short presentation) - in each room individually and then share with the whole group? if yes, how do they record this video and/or an audio? Thanks! Highly appreciated!
Thank you so much, Angela, for your comments. Anyone (including students) can share their screen in a breakout room. A 'local' Zoom recording can be made by people other than the host (i.e. the teacher) if that option is enabled in the 'Recording' settings before the meeting. However, it might be better to do this outside of the zoom class with a free screen capture tool. Check out my settings video here: www.teachertrainingvideos.com/key_settings_when_teaching_with_zoom

Hi Russel, great videos - so clear and through; you've really helped me start on zoom. Having begun teaching gentle exercise classes for the housebound, I'm planning a dance/movement class on Zoom, using external music (I'm an oldie with a CD mixing deck). Two questions about breakout rooms -1) Is there a way I can play the live music input into breakout rooms (the same music simultaneously into every breakout room) while the pairs/trios/quartets (max 4) in each breakout room can still see each other (i.e. move together) - or would I need to pre-record (e.g. onto Quicktime) to 'pipe' it in? 2) Is there a way that, while I'm screen-sharing an inspirational picture or video clip (e.g. of the sea, an animal running) into the breakout rooms, I (or those in the breakout rooms) could make the picture/video small enough for them to still be able to see and move in relation to each other (i.e. make the visual screen-share image around the equal size as the images of each of the duo/trio/quartet in the room)? Maybe these questions are too much for a pubic forum, and I need to have a personal coaching session with you. Darien Pritchard
no, you can't play music into breakout rooms. These are totally separate rooms. Each breakout room is a totally new Zoom room. You can't be in two at anytime. One student in each breakout room would have to share the music.
@@ttvRussell Thanks for your clear and concise response. Still working my way through and learning from your excellent videos. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
Thank you for an excellent video. You make it all so clear! I'm wondering about breakout rooms - can participants in each room see my screenshare in the main room. For lower proficiency learners, it would be useful for them to see the discussion questions or the text of the dialogue etc while they are in their breakout room.
Thank you for your comment, Cathy. You can share your screen in the main room, but when assigning break out rooms the participants will no longer see it. If it is one screen, e.g. a document or PowerPoint slide that you want to take to the breakout room, then ask them to take a screenshot first, so they have it on their computer. You can join their rooms and screen share, but that is time consuming, and you can only visit one room at a time. If you enable screen sharing for participants, too, during the meeting and before assigning the rooms, then someone in each room could share their screenshot or the document. i hope that helps. R
Hi Russell. Great video as usual. Is it possible to share different screens in each breakout room? For example, I want to a show a picture in room 1 but in room 2 I want to share a video.
Hi Robert. There isn't a direct way of doing this in Zoom breakout rooms. However, you can either join the rooms one at a time and share your screen, the one you want room 1 to see, room 2 to see etc. Get them to do a screenshot while you do this. Or you could share a link in the chat beforehand. Remember that you can choose who to assign to which room (1,2,3,4 etc). Make sure the option for sharing screens is enabled in Settings beforehand. Hope that helps. More on screen sharing here: ruclips.net/video/h4wu1CYEIRo/видео.html

Thanks Russell. Really clear and easy to follow. Gives me confidence to use breakout rooms for more engagement of students.
Good to hear that, Nigel. Thanks for your comment.
Thanks Russel for sharing all those extremely useful tips - even for a teacher with some experience with Breakout Rooms!! Reassigning students to different Rooms used to be my nightmare - now is very easy thanks to your help! :-)

Russell - great video. Quick Question. What if you want to assign students automatically, but you want to have one specific person (as a 'lead', for instance) in each room. Can you make such a manual assignment, and dedicate them as a 'host' or a 'lead' for that breakout room?
Mark, yes, just do it all manually instead of automatically.
Russell, you explained it in a very clear way, thank you so much!

Janice, yes, just add in the person manually. You don't have to use the automatic setting. More free videos here www.teachertrainingvideos.com/moodle

Excellent video. Very interesting, clear, simple and informative. Thanks a lot.

Yin, I don't understand why you can't hear the sound. Do you have your earphones connected into your phone? Doesn't the sound come through there?
@@ttvRussell Thank you so much for getting back to me. The Rode Wireless Mic I use only serves as a microphone but not as earphones unfortunately. I connect it to my phone and do not really see what other tool I would need in order be able to use earphones at the same time. Maybe you have an idea what I could use instead so I have the possibility to hear my students and speak to them at the same time. Thank you so much for your very helpful videos!

Extremely useful video. Thank you so much!
You're very welcome, Hanna!
Great tip thanks.

Thank you ! It was very helpful ! Is it possible to do a quiz on zoom?
Yes of course you can do a quiz, but not with Zoom itself. Use Zoom to share screen or share a link to an external quiz, such as Kahoot! or Google Forms. Here's an idea. Watch this and get learners or participants to do a quiz in Kahoot! by using their mobile phones. ruclips.net/video/ex8Hnl94IQE/видео.html or take part in a quiz where participants share their screens and questions on a document or video. Remember to turn on the 'play computer sound' in Zoom. See here: ruclips.net/video/h4wu1CYEIRo/видео.html

So if I want to add a link to the chat for students in the breakout rooms to access, can I do that?? I'm a little concerned about kids sharing other things on their screen when unsupervised.
Yes but they will all need to open it from the controls at the top when you are in screen share

Thank you for this great tutorial!

My question precisely... thanks for asking and answering
@@ttvRussell Does this mean I cannot send them a Doc o picture to the breakout room or to a specific person and he/she can share it in his break out..
