  • assassin's creed fell off bruh. but some of this assassin's creed shadows controversy doesn't make sense to me tbh.
if you're mad about the samurai champloo comparison, then you're cracked. your argument isn't that hip-hop is bad, or that it doesn't fit in the cultural context for Yasuke or feudal Japan, it's that it was implemented poorly. and when was the last time Ubisoft implemented something well? the same company that had the exact pirate game we wanted locked in a vault and then decided to release garbage live-service slop instead? no. be so fr.

the problem that the book was only used as a big source now, before was just footnote here and there and small mentions. Since now it was used to make AC and Japanese in general took knowledge of the amount of disrespect to their culture inside not only this book but on the game, thats why it became a thing. Sure you can see mentions on the hip hop music or Yasuke being a Samurai yada yada, but those are rly insanelly small problems in comparison to big problems that the book by Thomas Lockley brought, or AC as well. Heck they didnt even care about researching japanese history and made villages based on Thailand ancient history, and mixed a shit ton of chinese in the middle of it plus there are many kanji on the trailer that doesnt even exist hahaha... its like they didnt even try.

heres the thing, Ubisoft is indeed at fault because they would have never gone for Lockley's story if they weren't trying to push for DEI, past games have showed that AC has always had fictional main character thats race of the setting its taking in. Forget the music and forget Yasuke, even if they didn't use Lockley's fictional story Ubisoft will be still under heavy fire for their lack of effort in researching the tradition, culture and architecture of Japan, had they hired an actual Japanese culture and History consultant this could have been negated. Why was Ghost of Tsushima successful and loved by the Japanese while Shadows is under heavy fire even though the game is not out yet? its cause the dev of GoT put in the effort on researching the tradition and culture of Japan and they made sure not to disrespect the people they are basing the game on, Ubisoft ignored all that and went for 'their version' of Japanese history.

There’s a big issue with even the word Samurai in this context.
Samurai back then was a more specific title, but belonging to the warrior caste, something we would today consider to be in line with the image of samurai, is called Bushi. Yasuke was almost undoubtedly a Bushi, or warrior, but to say samurai in this context is problematic, to use the DEI-crowds own words against them.
The problem with adding hip hop to the game is because of the racial stereotypes. Yasuke isn’t African-American. He’s from Africa, and he wouldn’t have any connection at all to hip hop, and we know they added it because he’s black, because there’s no hip hop to be seen elsewhere so far, especially not when Naoe is fighting. If there had been hip hop during Naoe’s scenes, we could deduce that it’s a general vibe of the game, but it’s specific to Yasuke, which means it was made to invoke racial stereotypes, AKA they did it because they’re racist and thought all black people listen to hip hop.
The reason it works in champloo is because of the general vibe in the show and because they’re not highlighting this as connected to black people. It’s a goofy show about samurai where everything is a little modernised and reimagined with hip hop culture inserted to Japanese fiction. When something actually happened, they go in to detail and explore it, and when it’s just for fun, they don’t deep dive into the history.
    Also, Nujabes is Japanese.

Ubisoft is no fucking victim. This whole video reeks of "Leave the multi-million dollar company alone". They weren't tricked, people with zero interest in history or any acumen in it managed to find out this whole idea of yasuke being some legendary samurai figure was a fucking joke and yet i am supposed to believe that poor ubisoft with all it's money and resources couldn't detect this lie. They knew it was a lie, They just didn't care because DEI and ESG and Wokeness. They couldn't even get the time period specific things right, like the Japanese Kanji or architecture. UBISOFT is not a victim of anything other than their own hubris. Thomas Lockley was and will always be a scammer, everyone saw that.
And as for the music, for me, it's not even one of the major flaws, cuz both protagonists should have been Japanese to begin with, however, if it was a good choice for the poor decision of putting a random african man in samurai armor in feudal japan, why not play African Music. And before anyone says it, Yasuke is from Mozambique and yes we know what their music at the time sounded like, just like most other parts of africa.

    • @hazyhezzy
      @hazyhezzy  Месяц назад

i get that, my issue was a lot of the critique i saw about the music was just as shallow as “haha why would they put rap music in the game thats dumb” and i thought that was kind of dumb. i agree, obviously ubisoft is responsible for this dumb decision but like, i dont expect much from the objectively floundering company. they suck lmao. i dont think they should get off with this one but it seems like a pretty logical decision to use someone like Yasuke for this kind of game and then when a guy comes along who is literally a professor in japanese history at the university of nihon, why would the scummy company not take advantage of this too good to be true “coincidence” (probably a better word but ykwim). but like i said, there’s no excuse for the mistakes that don’t have to do with the music. my issue was only that people were saying the choice to use it was dumb, when if you take ubisoft as ignorant and dumb instead of malicious, the choice to use hip-hop isn’t bad. everything else is kinda rage bait tbh. hope you weren’t too offended, i hope ubisoft burns to the ground over what it did to assassins creed a long time ago, i just didn’t want to see rap go with it. i think ultimately we have the same opinion, you just know a lot more about the topic and i was just reacting to people acting like their music critiques were really important. also the neflix show exists, i think im right that people should be more focused on this guy bc clearly not everyone knew he was a scammer. i legit thought he was a mysterious swordsman who might’ve been a samurai until this happened, thanks for providing some more context tho.

"who is literally a professor in japanese history at the university of nihon"
He is NOT a professor of history. He is just an English teacher there.
What Ubisoft here just did is asking someone who fits their own agenda.
Meanwhile, the real researchers such as Goza Yûichi who have a relevant degree and are actually knowledgeable about history for that era have more or less the same opinion on the subject Yasuke.
There are just a very few primary sources on the topic.
And only one of them which happens to be a handwritten copy from 1719 of another book which is known as the Nobunaga Chronicles that was burnt during a fire is only giving hints on his status. However, this source does not even use the word Samurai. It says he got a sword as well as a name, a stipend and a house, which would suggest this status.
But judging by this kind of quality of the source it is based on, while the other copies don't even mention Yasuke, it is highly unlikely that this is valid.
In anyways, as Goza states in his article and where I just take the fredom to copy it here:
      弥助が武士(侍)に取り立てられたという説の根拠は、尊経閣文庫本『信長公記』のみであり、弥助を「黒人のサムライ」と断定するのには慎重であるべきではないだろうか。
      Or in English:
the basis for the theory that Yasuke has been promoted to Warrior (Samurai) is exclusively to find in the Sonkekaku-edition of the Nobunagakôki and therefore shouldn't one be careful to draw the conclusion of Yasuke being a "black Samurai"?
(Sorry if my English is not good, but this is roughly what he states).

It's a work of fiction. I don't personally care whether they take liberties with it. They transformed many other historical figures into members of secret sects and cults possessing borderline magical powers. If that isn't a sign that they're not trying to be historically accurate, I don't know what is. If people want to complain, they're welcome to. I just don't see the argument for accuracy, realism, or proper representation to be a proper argument for said complaints or dislike. It's more like a pretext to me.

However, combined with the aesthetic inaccuracies of Japan at that time, the fact that I am "playing" as Yasuke is the issue. While I don't know 100%, it does not sound like, other than stealth, Yasuke will be restricted to anything. I don't think Ubisoft can write the nuances of playing a real life historical figure, no matter how obscure, into AC. AC's never really been under this much heat. The games have been historically accurate to a certain extent. They've always been Historical Fantasy games. Blending science fiction and what if stories. There has to be a layer of disbelief. Yasuke being black isn't really an issue, in fact I find it a good opportunity to allow the player to play as a historical figure. The problem lies within Ubisoft's lack of care for the Japanese culture, placing real life historical reenactment banners thinking they were real, and I have a personal issue with Ubisoft using AI to generate the world etc. I think Alissa Ralph shot herself in the foot when she chose Yasuke as the Samurai protagonist. Simply because we don't know if he was, he was given a plot of land, and certain privileges given towards the Samurai class, but nowhere is it ever explicitly stated. The Nobunaga period of Japan is an era filled with exceptions and mystery. I'd highly recommend studying the topic and coming to your own conclusion, unlike a majority of people who seemingly think they're correct. Keep up the good work!

Oh and the music is a problem in it on itself because all these people that claim to be all about inclusion, how they're above objectification of women yet they make super buff shirtless men, how they're above tokenism, yet they choose to show their black character with dreadlocks and fighting to a hip hop beat, it's a problem because it's hipocritical plain and simple.
As a bonus I just hate people defending this game with the "Assassin's creed was never historically accurate" BULLSH*T!!! yes we all know there were no apples of eden, Leonardo didn't make gadgets for assassins, blah, blah, blah, but they WERE RESPECTFUL TO HISTORY DAMMIT!!! Blackbeard's last stand, Lorenzo de Medici's assassination attempt, the Lisbon earthquake, Paul Revere's ride, the storming of la Vastille, all real historical events, AC has always woven it's narrative around actual historical events and they've mostly been very detailed about them, to the point were they used their 3D model to repair Notre Dame, and the most recent game Mirage were Baghdad was so faithfully recreated it reportedly made a historian weep, Ubisoft has no excuse for it's square tatamis or burning incense on shinto shrines, they simply don't care about this specific culture.

so take two steps back and look at the title, its literally the “um, actually” meme. i know ubisoft is bad, its a bad company. i never expected them to make good decisions. i did a little research but im not heavily invested in this. look at my sub count and my channel, i did this for engagement m8. thats why i dont go into detail on anything, im not a valid source. read the comments, read the pinned comment. nothing you said here i haven’t addressed. people have given me a wealth of actually useful knowledge with sources. ive read some of it, i know more now. but this video does not need to give you this reaction. i hate ubisoft, i hate what they did to assassin’s creed a long time ago. i was there for the ezio trilogy, i was there for AC3. i did the eden puzzles. i love seeing ubisoft flounder, i just think its weird so much of the criticism was on music choice and not this guy being around for nearly a decade

Gotta be kidding me if you think I'd believe y'all are genuinely angry as if this is an academic travesty for you ppl. If people actually cared about historical accuracy or faithfulness, movies like Ridley Scott's Napoleon would never had happened.
Gamers, famously the least sophisticated of media consumers, would rather make this political before they'd ever admit that video game writing has ALWAYS been particularly abysmal.
The gameplay showcase felt almost like satire. A black dude happily wandering around Japan, shooting the breeze about 'freeing the people' and 'giving freedom and justice'. Such washed out Western tropes. Dude then murders some Japanese sicarios like pancakes and everything is so colourful and pretty again? It's absurd.
Ubisoft writers, like every writers for most modern video games, lack any semblance of creativity, finesse and subtlety. They have checklists and fulfill them. Assassins Creed had always had crappy writing since AC Rogue. They are all vapid, meaningless, juvenile yet serviceable enough to pump out and keep a gamer occupied for 5 hours.
So why is it suddenly such a big deal? Why are gamers fronting as if theyve ever harboured any standards in their lives? Because now they can do so under a political veil.
Anyone who tries to tell me that this controversy is a big deal and worth paying mind to, are lying to themselves. They have nothing better to do, and they aren't intelligent enough to gauge bad writing without the support of political undercurrents.

it really is hard to believe that people genuinely thought that this game was going to groundbreaking. so its hard to be mad that the bad company did a bad thing in game that if past is prologue, is probably also going to be mid at best.

you said he got tricked by this "professor", yet you kind of forget there is literally an entire team of Japanese UBI staff in Tokyo, who actually know Japanese and Japanese history, rather doing that they believed a translated "know that if it is true or not" publication and wikipedia
3:14 you said why judge people who have credential? so if a physician say gravity is actually going upwards you will not judge them? no this is not how it is done, any new discovery, whether if it is from a hobbyist or professional, shall be judge, the only difference is there are slightly less judgement becuase of the credential and people believe in professional ethics to be in place.
4:22 the show is in Netflix argumnent does not stand for the following reason:1) it is out loud it is in alternate reality, 2) it is not in the japanese tv channel (note that if you live in japan anime are on tv) 3)it is so not that popular (2021 and 2022 people are too hyped in Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer) most likely it has been all under the radar

your point about my netflix argument is kind of my point, this wouldn’t have been an issue if they didn’t profess his role was historically accurate. my point about credentials is that literally there is an entire profit model handing out “credentials” if im a ubisoft marketing exec, the credentials this guy has probably is all i look at. ubisoft didn’t care about this game and they got scammed. but i never and i cant believe anyone else thought ubisoft was a company who cared about their games that much. also a physician wouldn’t be able to credibly tell me that, you mean a physicist. and obviously not bc gravity is something that i can feel right here right now, its not something that has conflicting accounts and is highly debated anymore. notice i say i have no issue with the criticism over the other historical inaccuracies in the game. elsewhere in this comments section you can find me saying that i believe the inclusion of yasuke started as fantasy and some guy came along and said “no actually all this stuff is real”

@@hazyhezzy the point I'm making is they are doing they are not familiar with, and instead of getting their Japanese local staff who has basic knowledge to start off the research process and they use the research result, they go bluntly and get a book to get ideas.
You say they are the victim and should not blame them but I would disagree, due to the above-mentioned reason.
