  • The Santorini cable car connects the port with the town of Thera in Santorini island in Greece. It was constructed as a donation of the “Loula & Evangelos Nomikos Foundation”. The cable car, technically a pulsed Gondola lift, was built by Doppelmayr, has a capacity of 1,200 people per hour (600 per hour in each direction). The journey takes 3 minutes.
The cable car enables visitors arriving by ship to ascent the cliffs easily and quickly. Each car carries six passengers.
Santorini is an island in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km (120 mi) southeast from the Greek mainland. It is the largest island of a small circular archipelago, which bears the same name and is the remnant of a caldera. It forms the southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands, with an area of approximately 73 km2 (28 sq mi) and a 2011 census population of 15,550. The municipality of Santorini includes the inhabited islands of Santorini and Therasia, as well as the uninhabited islands of Nea Kameni, Palaia Kameni, Aspronisi and Christiana. The total land area is 90.623 km2 (34.990 sq mi). Santorini is part of the Thira regional unit.
The island was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history: the Minoan eruption (sometimes called the Thera eruption), which occurred about 3,600 years ago at the height of the Minoan civilization. The eruption left a large caldera surrounded by volcanic ash deposits hundreds of metres deep.
It is the most active volcanic centre in the South Aegean Volcanic Arc, though what remains today is chiefly a water-filled caldera. The volcanic arc is approximately 500 km (300 mi) long and 20 to 40 km (12 to 25 mi) wide. The region first became volcanically active around 3-4 million years ago,[citation needed] though volcanism on Thera began around 2 million years ago with the extrusion of dacitic lavas from vents around Akrotiri.

How busy was the cable car line for your trip? And how long was your tender from ship to dock? We’re trying to budget times for a shore excursion we have planned Jul 23. Thank you!

Actually we were the first ones off the ship that day and we made a beeline right for the cable car. We had read stories about it taking a while to get to the top. So, we made sure to get off quickly since we had a local tour booked and had to meet at a certain time. So, there was no line for us, but we're the exception.
There was a long line to go back down. So we decided to walk down the path which was a big mistake. The path is disgusting and the pathway is quite smooth and you can easily slip and hurt yourself.
Also, we were the only big cruise ship there that day and there was one smaller one and it was quite busy. I can't imaging what it's like when there are multiple big ships in port. You can find out what ships are there by googling "Santorini cruise ship calendar". There are a few site that will tell you what ships are there each day.
      Have a great trip!

@@ACGTravelVideos thank you so much for your quick and detailed reply. we are the 2nd docking ship in Santorini at 8A. the earlier ship docks at 7A. i am budgeting a 30 minute cable car ride and being of our ship on the first tender at 8A or sooner. We just need to be at the top by 855A to walk to our meetup point for our shoreex. fingers crossed we can make this all work. plan B is hail a taxi when atop Fira and get to the excursion ourselves.
