- "A company within a company." That's the story of Shapeways, a startup that began in an incubator within Dutch conglomerate, Philips. And Shapeways itself is something of an incubator - a 3D-printing marketplace that allows for others to make a business out of their work.
Small Empires is our new weekly show that visits rising New York City startups and provides never-before-seen access to the men and women building our future. Join Alexis Ohanian as he talks to Shapeways CEO Peter Weijmarshausen, as well as Shapeways artist / cufflinks aficionado Peter Knocke, whose work is made via Shapeways. (Note: this is our mid-season break. We won't be back next week, but we'll see you soon!)

The first time I downloaded blender was in 1999. I made the hammer that was explained in the tutorial. I knew we would use this in the future. I have had it and my desktop ever since. It has taught me so much about 3D design. I have designed so many things, that I have brought into the world real world. As a tool for translating ideas into reality, Blender is the ultimate.
I know its a video on shapeways, but I just wanted to homage Blenders creator. And now CEO of shapeways Peter Weijmarshausen.
I owe everything I have to this program. You can say it has created my world.
Thank you so much for this gift to the world.
The script , the editing , the host , the guests ... all the things about this show are perfect. Keep up the good work
The bacon thing stopped being funny after four seconds
You could tell everyone in that place was annoyed with this dude.
I was gonna be pissed if there wasn't a top comment about the bacon thing being stupid as hell. So painful to watch...
Yeah dude jeez he just keeps talking and like he's not even a good personality.
Shapeways was a really good idear.
It's extremely awesome to see new companies like shapeways paving the way for a new type of economy.
Can't believe I've found these series a year later... :D
Great work.
Truly inspiring!
I've been waiting my whole life for this.
This was the first time I watched Small Empires and I liked it! Congratulations to Alexis and The Verge.
The Verge know how to make great shows that truly inspire people.
The best episode I've seen jet! Some day soon I'll be doing manufacturing!! This inspired me!!!
This show needs to be seen by more people! Thousands of people isn't enough, it needs to be hundreds of thousands of people. The production value is amazing, it is super inspiring, and it just goes to show how amazing interent content can be!
Another great video from the verge as always
As a low cost proto-typing tool, the 3D printing platform is a maker's dream come true. Hopefully, the first of many more examples of startups specializing in digital-to-physical products to come.
This is the best episode yet. This startup is really awesome. They didn't just build a platform, they even produce all the things, really impressed me. I will definitely try this out. Thanks to TheVerge for introducing this company!
OMG! and these guys ship worldwide! awesome!
As an artist, Shapeways is literally a dream come true for me. Seeing it from this angle was a great treat. :)
This is a pretty good show. Never really felt bored watching it.

nice epsiode. Nice to see someone from my home country, the netherlands, in view.
Who needs a TV when online shows like this are made so well. So good, and come to Ireland (We are apparently the tech hub of Europe, prove this right!)
Inspired!!!
Yay got started in The Netherlands!
Great, I repeat great show! It shows so many different, but awesome startups and, as somebone already said, it's all perfect and you guys even have a theoretical bacon physicist. What can possibly go wrong. Waiting for the next episodes and I'm hoping for a 2nd season! Keep it up!

Gotta love the guys Square 1 at 7:35 sitting on the table just a 180 turn away from being solved
Another big thing that comes from my home town. By the way love the Dutch accent.
Oh Yeah, I have a lot of great idears for this right here.
So I didn't get it, then I visited their site and immediately understood the sheer genius of this business model.
I might just try my luck on safeways haha
The last episode of Small Empires should be about The Verge :D
I suddenly realized .. Alexis is as tall as the elevator door?

Also would be great to organize it in a playlist :) I've been sharing the series via a search query on your channel but some episodes (like this one) doesn't show correctly! :))
14:22 I dig that Sutro Tower tattoo.
INSPIRED!!
I just loved this!!!
I watched it because I just discovered the details of their brilliant business model.
I am a long time inventor and have been working to license products for years, even with professional help it can be a long time and a challenging path.
I still prefer to go the licensing path, but as a back end alternative, I can take products which for whatever reason ( usually sales volume ) would not be successfully licensed and sell them myself through Shapeways.
This service, 3D printing in general and crowd sourcing have, and will continue to revolutionize the world and the opportunities for private individuals to bring ideas and inventions into the market all by themselves, as you say " without anyone's permission ".
So excited to be alive in these amazing times,
Tim B. Green
Additive manufacturing is the biggest revolution ever...remember my words!
In 2066: "Welcome to history class kids. Today, we're talking about Rapbando's thought 'Addiive manufacturing is the biggest revolution ever' from 2015. Wow that goof was so wrong..."
LOL, we'll see in 50 years...
Size is one advantage they have. Home printers won't be very huge for a while. Or have quite the same set of features. Plus Shapeways is a store also.
Not yet! Just taking a small mid-season break.
I kinda liked the Small Empires epi. no: Company Name because that way I felt curious to know what's it about. :)
I notice almost everyone's desk has an Oskar Van Deventer puzzle on it.
How do you know everything about me! Jk. :P
Good question, but for one: most people won't have a HUGE 3D printer at home, so for the bigger items, you still need to go somewhere else.
DPS (Damage Per Second) cant be applied if there is no time. The battleaxe would have Damage per hit
I love this show. Alexis how much of Reddit stock do you own? And how many more episodes are left?
I wish I can work in these kind of company
This is waay too coool
Currently the majority of my income comes from selling things on Shapeways.
I bought something from shapes like 2 years ago, and it was shipped from Netherlands
lol that bacon mobius strip made out of real bacon is pure genius!
How do they do coloring? Also how do they print metal objects?
Coloring depends on the material. The sandstone is colored during printing and the nylon (the lasered white powder) is dyed in a pigment bath after printing. Metal parts are either printed like nylon, or they print wax models first and cast them :)
this reallt inspire me.. i see the ideas off this.. but it need to be make smart produckt.. ppl use every days.. kitchen tools and way more and mass poduce and make it cheap...
Awesome - locking really forward to seeing the #3D-model of @LockSchuppen in front of me.
Just ran in to Alexis on the street.. I tried to say "small empires" but I think he was convinced I was a crazy person
You and me both, friend!!
AWESOME ... 8)
I think they make their own music.. I can see it now.. The Verge EP
LOOOL THAT ENDING ! xD
Cool credits at 25:05
Theoretical bacon physicist: Alexis Ohanian
The best episode so far!
P.S. Does anybody know the title of the song playing at the end credits? Can't find it on Shazam.
