I owned a newer odr-1 and was not blown away. It was indeed too bassy. I also heard that there is a lot of variation in this pedal so I may have gotten a dud. These are both common criticisms I discovered before I heard them from the internet. I currently have the Browne protein on my board and the right side is inspired by the odr-1. It sounds AMAZING. I had heard about it a long long time ago, but never saw one in person. Then Tim Pierce made me finally go buy one 7-8 years ago. It was less than $100 CAD at the time which is a huge bargain. Funny I can't remember important stuff like birthdays but I can remember some super useless information like that. Might go watch that video again now...
The real reason is because the original Nobels ODR-1 is super boomy and muddy. This makes it primarily useful as a Tele bridge pickup overdrive, hence the specific popularity with Nashville session guys. New ones and clones generally have a stock bass cut, or bass cut switch.
