i remember going to zoo a few years back and went into the avian area where there was a white cockatoo when i got to have it on my hand i remember petting it gently and even chatting with him to the point not even the zoo keepers can take him back cause he keep trying to bite them and didnt want to be separated from me eventually i got him off but that short bond we had will always be in my memory it was a good trip

Well if he's the only bird in the house, it's no surprise. He only has humans to interact with. Sorry to say it, it has nothing to do with you. That's typical behaviour of single birds. Experts like from the Exopet studies view this as a clear sign of bad caretaking.
It made me feel a lot better hearing that you shed a lot of tears in the beginning. I'm on month two and this is really hard! Birds are no joke but I can see progress happening and it feels so rewarding ☺️☺️

@@janety101 it's really hard I agree! Mine has started flying pretty well now but doesn't understand windows. She has semi bonded with me and my partner now which helps A LOT, I just worry about her having enough time out the cage as we work full time. She is 6 months now and it is getting quite satisfying as she understands what she should and shouldn't do. Biting is still pretty tricky but she is a Parrotlet who are typically bitey anyway. Do you struggle with yours biting too?

This is so so true. I had a period of pretty bad mental health. A week or so, and I interacted with my parrot way less. When I was feeling normal again and went back to normal routine, he was much less content and trusting, and more skittish. I'm now working to make him feel loved and appreciated again. I feel so bad ;n;

it's reassuring seeing everyone elses frustration and dedication to taming their birds. my quaker died awhile ago, and he was so hand tame. flight call trained, would cuddle under blankets. about as tame as a bird can get. i got a cockatiel and it wants nothing to do with me, which is discouraging on its own, but especially coming from having such a bond with another bird.
I had the same thing with my conures. The first one was so sweet and was with me all day. I got another one after she died and my second one is a very hard biter and I can't do hardly anything with him.

Important to point out - grooming and preening your bird should never stroke, rub, or preen under their neck area. You are sending them hormonal messages this way. Neck up = friends. Below the neck = breeding. Even rubbing their beak to much can send the wrong signals. Holding your hand up for them to snuggle into is fine and all. Just keep an eye on this if it is making them hormonal or not. Good video otherwise.
My female Senegal parrot lays three to four eggs every spring. Will no contact stop her laying eggs? She is very affectionate just before she lays her eggs. She is twenty four years old.
@@beryllaing6992 there are a few things that can trigger hormonal egg laying. Touching a bird under their neck. High fatty seed diet. To much fruit for non fruit birds. Warm mushy foods. To much sunlight, make sure your bird gets 12 to 13 hours of dark quiet sleep. Having nesting places. Like cozee huts or dark corners she keeps finding also do not help. The channel BirdNerdSophie has an amazing video on this subject.
I rescued parrots for over 20 years and have 7 that remained with me. During my active rescue years I provided free public service programs to schools, preschools, nursing homes, libraries, etc. I say this because your videos are amazing and so accurate. What a great service you are providing, even to people who may not own parrots, but have friends who do. We still have children who, now that they are grown are bring their children to us to meet our birds. Because we used and taught ideas that are very similar to your tips, all of our birds are extremely social, even a blue and gold macaw who came to us from a home where the man and been extremely abusive. It took patience and a few years before she even let my husband near her and now many years later she plays with him and was even able to join our programs that had lots of males in the audience !!! The only tip I would like to add to your video about biting is a really visible sign a bird uses to let you know they are reaching the ‘end of their patience’ is their eyes. The center will shrink suddenly to almost a pin point- that is the time to back off right away. An exception to this file is male eclectus parrots, their eyes will almost glow orange!!! Please keep you great videos coming. It is a wonderful help to many👍🏻

I got a budgie a couple of weeks ago but we got him and his brother soo they nearly formed a bond but me and my sister quickly separated them and thanks to all you have shown us they have become much tamer and healthier!!! And it only been a week!! I’ve decided to teach my budgie target training from one of your vids and he knows it soooo welll thank thank you sooo much!!!
I think my wife and I are the luckiest pet owners as to when we got our Green Cheek Conure it immediately bonded with us and was super friendly. It is very socially and sometimes quite clingy when it comes to sticking around. Can be sometimes nippy, but other than that I can't really complain. It's such a beautiful and cute bird that it didn't take us more than a couple of days to just be happy to always see it around us.
I have finches and I’ve noticed a huge difference with our bond because now I’m attempting to teach them tricks. I love how tips for parrots can be applied to smaller birds, or any animal really.
It's more or less the stuff that animal caretakers learn at zoos. Interact with the animals, but never forcefully and slowly test that safe space everytime you work with or around them. The bonds formed in such a way are just healthy.
You will be happy with the gray. I had 1 .he just died 4 weeks ago. I got him from my mom's friend about 10 years ago. He was all most 43 years old I think. They are very smart.
Years ago my kids wanted an Australian parakeet, white with red cheeks and a yellow top. The bird shop eventually called us. In a shoe box were several young chicks without proper feathers yet. One immediately attracted my attention. He was up front with an open beak expecting to be fed. I chose him and since my kids were going to school, I had to feed him with warm food every day all the time, so he bonded with me. We had a fantastic relationship. He learnt to sing many a very complex song. Would enter his cage and close the door, when he wanted to go to sleep. Was absolutely telepathic and could identify coming guests two, three minutes before their arrival by say things they usually said to him. An absolutely great experience of bird intelligence, intimacy and a trust worthy relationship.
I lost my birds trust because I wore my mask around her. I never taunted her with my face mask, but I guess that wearing my mask around her while she was in her cage made her territorial. Plus it’s hormone season.. I guess that anything could contribute to her not trusting me anymore. I am at fault for her biting my face painfully. This video gave me some more insight on trust and birds. Thank you!
I lost trust with my bird after I shaved for the first time since having her. Probably was mad that she couldn't groom it either as she loved to groom it.

I’m currently on my winter break and trying to form a bond with my 6 birds again. During the school I wasn’t doing well with my mental health and was focusing more on school than on them. At first I only had to birds and had a good bond by a few months later my aunt gave me 4 more birds and it’s been really stressful so I’m trying my best to regain that bond with them.
It took 8 months for my first ever budgie to come around to me. He would spend a lot of time on his swing in front of the window in the corner of my room and keeping quiet, but I never gave up! I gave him time to fly around my room, read to him almost every day, taught him 'step up' and 'come on', got him used to the bathroom, tried out different toys with him, and when he wouldn't come to me, I would visit and talk to him and kiss him on his lil head. EIGHT MONTHS! There were days when I was really frustrated and thought that he'd never like me, but over time he went out of his way to interact with me in subtle little ways that felt so rewarding each time and made everything ABSOLUTELY worth it. I thought he was shy at first, but he's actually quite a feral lil dino man! And he doesn't do everything I say, mind. He acts out and bites me often, especially now that I recently got him some budgie friends of his own this year and he's more independent... I miss when it was just us, in a way. But I respect his boundaries, and we still absolutely love each other. It's a huge pain and scary when you start out but totally worth it!!
One of my 2 birbs that I started with had a nightfright on a weekend which led to a severe concussion. She was unconcious and had cramps, but I was able to put her in a carton that I filled with litter. I kept taking care of her, speaking softly, lightly petting her all night until she regained coconciousness and was lighter on her feet. She was a biter when I first got her, but after that night she was the sweetest bird ever and I think she recognized my helping hand. I've never been bitten since by any of the birds I have now. The others basically copied her behaviour one at a time. Now they're all fine with me taking them in my hands although that's a thing birds inherently hate. So, I didn't need to do much - just be nice to them and don't overdo it.

I've never owned a bird, but as a cat and dog owner, I gotta say a lot of this applies to any pet regardless of species. The boundaries stuff is especially applicable for cats (90% of "mean cats" are just cats who have learnt that humans won't respect their boundaries), and the training advice is especially applicable to dogs.

I have a 7 yr old green cheek conure named Apollo and I got him just less than a week ago and I’ve spent the entirety of the days just having him sit on my shoulder while I do everyday things and we have bonded so much through it. Just tonight he was falling asleep in my hand while I was on my phone, I love my little guy so much
It took me about a year to tame my gcc (he was not hand raised and nippy) but now he is so clingy, he wants to be with me all the time xD Basically I just left the cage open all day unless I had to leave the house. Then hang his food bowl on the outside of the cage facing my side (where I usually sit at my desk) and just watch him eat everyday and talk to him. After a while he starts playing outside the cage, and eventually he understood the routine of coming out of his cage in the morning and eating on the outside of the cage near me. After a few months I let him sit on my shoulder without touching him, only having him step up and walked around the house and back to the cage, So he got more used to me. Just have patience follow the tips in the video and involve them in almost everything you do, eating, watching a movie, doing the dishes etc. And slowly you'll see improvement. Think of it as a marathon not a race. Once they get used to you they want to spend time with you all the time.
This is so interesting. My fully grown cockatiels were raised with and abusive owner and now are extremely aggressive and don’t like to be held or touched at all! Any help? I’ve been looking everywhere but nobody has been able to help me so far :/
@@frog953 i don’t think a RUclips comment section is the right place to find help, but i would suggest starting at the bottom of the barrel basics. Barely touch them? Treat. They come near you and don’t get angry? Treat. I “tamed” a feral dog that way, and the most important thing is patience.

I have been doing this and he has a window in the room where his cage is. I saw he was flying to it a couple times and gave him a perch and left some millet over there, he will fly there every morning and eat it. He loves sitting by the window but as soon as I move in any way he flies back 😭 It’s been like 4 months since i’ve had him and he still feels a cautious around me even though i’m with him 24/7 🧍
Sigh. One of my sons found an albino parakeet on our property. She was skinny and cold and the next day the temperature was to drop to the teens with lots of snow and high winds. So, he threw a towel over her once he got close enough, and brought her in after putting her in a have-a-heart cage. While my son posted the find on several sights and made fliers to put up, I went out to buy her a house, food and toys. I saw black under her wings when she preened and found a vet to see her. She had scabs and dried blood that the vet said could be harboring a slight infection. After only 2 days of attempting to bond with her, she and I were faced with the horror of me having to catch her and squirt an antibiotic in her mouth while she yelled at me; for ten days, twice a day. Now she hates and fears me. No one has come forward to claim her and I have grown to love her and intend to keep her. I am learning a lot about what she needs and more then anything, I want to be friends. I am moving slowly, and would appreciate anything you are willing to share to help her through this trauma. Thank you for sharing this and other videos. It is very helpful. I am on week 3 with my cockatiel, and have begun to be impatient with all efforts at trying to earn trust seeming to take so long. However, I am encouraged to slow down even further and to continue to be consistent and creative.
My conure is a rescue that was given to a 2 year old for Christmas, he had a girlfriend who sadly passed away, and that’s when we got him. He’s still very skittish of hands and sort of bitey (especially my ears agh I don’t need more peircings) but he’s lovely and our cuddliest bird

I have a lovebird and our bond is quite special. I have him for six years now, he was a rescue found in a garden, he always have been really afraid of fingers. He sleeps on me all the time, wants kisses and cuddles, he wants me to groom him but if I try to touch him with my fingers he's afraid, so I have to scratch him with my nose or my chin, it's not very effective haha. We've started target training but has he is afraid of fingers I can't give him millet for reward (even if it's his jackpot reward). One of our major issue is that I recently learn that he have a circovirus , the psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD). Every now and then he contract a small infection (usually on the left ear) and I have to give him medicine or clean the discharge from his ear. He hate it, I hate it too, and I have the feeling that our bond brakes apart every time I have to force him to take is medicine. It's quite heartbraking to see him so stressed afterward..
My conure is a Pineapple turquoise Green Cheek Conure (I know it’s a long name) but he looks just like pineapple except his wings are more blue and his tail feathers a tan. Your birds are so cute omg I love them ❤️ 🦜
this was a really good video!! ive had my budige for multiple years now and have gained a good idea of her boundaries but she still would not let me touch her, but shes happy!. now that we've had to go to the vet a few times its like startinng at square one again. but i cant wait for her to feel better and then to start training again properly! it is such a rewarding experience :)
We rescue animals and help find new homes for them. So it was a surprise when we got a call about a Green Cheek found on the side of the road. We contacted the breeder. Then contacted the people who bought her. Haven't heard back. And its obvious this little girl, ( she told me her name is Cloey ) has been wild for awhile. But after watching your videos( because her and I weren't getting along) found out she has been potty trained. Someone spent time training her. Your videos have helped me with her tremendously. Thank you. I will watch them all.
“It may take longer to bond with a rescue bird that with a young bird. Or it may not take as long” I agree, my green cheek conure is a rescue bird. He warmed up to me right away! I think it is because he didn’t suffer much trauma. He just flew away from his owner and someone found him and put him in the rescue.
My cats joined me while i was watching this video and they were fully captivated! I hope they've learned too! 😆 So, i've inherited my dad's 4 y.o. lovebird unexpectedly last month. Not an ideal scenario when you already have two cats! I was told that a close bonding might never be possible, but i keep hoping... He's happy in a much bigger cage, with more attention and care... Shouldn't expect miracles. I just wish he came on my hand... He's afraid of hands but not of kisses!
Also remember; just because some people have had (not so much blood or sweat 5:52 ) if you want to own a bird; you have to know you might get bitten. My bird and I went through a phase where he would be super bratty and territorial of bad places in the house and he would bite me when I tried to move him.. And I would get super upset cause it hurts and he's my baby..! As a training boundary; my bird and I have realized that when I put the "safety gloves on" it means its time to come I dont even have to use the glove; I just have to hold it in my other hand. It made things better cause I could get him away from the places he was trying to "set his boundaries" but I also could set mine without getting upset in a way that freaked him out and made our relationship stressed. Having a bird is a long road; Its like having a child almost
Last night was the first night i let my birds fly outside their cage. Since i have a dog in my room most of the time i didn't think of it before, but i made my dog leave my room and let them out. I was so happy to see my birds fly around like they did. They looked so happy it make me happy and it was the first time one of them actually let me touch him without flying away, but he did back up so i took the hint and just gave him some millet spray. But i feel so proud that i am somewhat gaining trust :)
20 years ago I bought a parent raised Sun Conure. I didn't know anything about birds. Every day I would reach into her cage and grab her and she would grab my thumb. I would pet her & talk to her. As weeks went on I would gradually walk further from her cage. She didn't like to be far from her cage. As time went on I had a potty trained bird motivated by praise and attention. Never did I use food as a motivator. Negative behaviors were ignored. Positive behaviors met praise and affection. She has been an excellent pet, albeit one that requires a lot of attention.
you are so helpful I will definitely try these things and you are so correct on everything because one thing I learned from taming my birds was to go at there own pace and time lots of time because I thought it wouldn't take as long as it did. My blue budgie, when I got him he was really scared because he was man handled so when I tried taming him he didn't like it but now I have him and my other budgie and they are pretty tame I just needed this video because I needed to know how to bond with them especially when they are still scared of a lot of things I do around them like cleaning there cage, cleaning the room, but I'm workin on it. This is kind of an older post, so I don't know if I will get any advice, but I'm trying anyway! I have had my green cheek, Miller, for about 12 years (got him when he was a baby.) We have always been well-bonded. About 7 years ago, we adopted an Indian ringneck. It took Miller a while to get used to him, but eventually he tolerated him well enough and they actually share a large cage. The ringneck is obsessed with Miller and only wants to be with him. It has turned out well bc I have had 2 children during then and now and have also been a full-time caregiver for my mom. I was glad Miller wasn't without a buddy to keep him company while I was very busy. I still interacted with him every day, but not the same bc he would go out of his way to bite my kids and my elderly mom. The ringneck is very affable, sweet, and friendly to everyone, so I don't worry about my bond with him. But since having kids, it has been hard to have the same connection with Miller that I used to have. I completely understand why, and I'm not surprised. But I don't know how to fix the bond with the ringneck involved. I feel like Miller is half bonded with me and half with the ringneck (whose name is Jr. by the way). But he is not sweet with me anymore, he bites me all the time. It makes me sad and I want to put in the work to fix it. Should I separate them when I take them out of the cage to spend indovidual time with them? Jr. screams the whole time when he can't see Miller. Any advice appreciated.
I have a tip for acclimating a new bird, especially if it’s not well socialized or is timid. For our first bird I got a hanging rectangle mosquito net ( not the hoop type ) made to completely enclose the bed. I pulled the cage up to the side & clipped the net opening to the cage to create a seal . I left the cage door open with various enticements on the bed (millet sprays are a must) & a bird ladder for easy access . I would just chill , watch videos , read , play some bird sounds & music . BTW, NEVER LEAVE THE BIRD ALONE IN A MOSQUITO NET . I never had anything happen , but it’s not worth taking the risk. Before long our new bird was grooming my neck then falling asleep on me. For our new GCC I got the tent style pop up version of a mosquito net for our bed . OMG ! So much easier & portable!! This bird is much more socialized , but sadly, was clipped before we got her. The netting on the bed was just a safe way of hanging out with her until we got to know her more. She thinks she can fly and it’s just sad & dangerous, IMO. I got my mosquito nets on Amazon from Evan Naturals ,but any highly rated netting would work. I really love the pop up but the hanging one is more attractive, if that matters to you.It’s a lot more work, however. Some nets hang from a hoop thing and spread out . They don’t provide much structure so I avoided that type Just my opinion . Our birds have cages but they stay open unless there is a situation that could be dangerous, like bringing in groceries or having repairmen coming in & out the house. Our rabbit doesn’t have a cage at all🐰
Great video and you have lovely birds. My cockatiel Smokey is bonded very well with me (I spend the time and put the effort in) but he's a bird that doesn't seem to want scritches. It's a shame and I'm doing small things to encourage him letting me but at the end of the day I can't force him to let me so I let it be. He's also not a big fan of toys but I discovered he loves playing with buttons. Every bird is different (Despite common behaviours) and it's wonderful seeing their personalities. As you'll already know. These animals aren't pets. They're members of the family #engagednotcaged
I had a budgie that flew away named Ricky. He was super cute 🥰 I taught him to fly to my on command using millet and he would always want to come out if his cage. It feels lonely without him, but I still have so many awesome other birds! 🥺🥺

here are my 2 tips that will help you easy with trust gain. 1. assuming it's a new bird or pair first 2 weeks don't try to interact physically. just talk and whistle from a viewing distance. 3rd and 4th week get them use to your hand inside the cage. it might go upto 6th to 7th week until they get use to your hand. 2. this tip works only if first tip is successfully executed, which means your bird doesn't get startled by your hand inside the cage. i know my birds eat early in morning around 7:30-8am so night before at 12am i remove the seed bowls from cage. at 8am i hold seeds in my palm and little spreaded near fingers and slowly take my hand close to them. if they even slightly running away then i stop moving closer and don't go near at all. put the seed bowl back in cage, try next day. repeat the routine. on 3rd day female bird came close took a quick scan took one seed. 20 seconds later she is on my palm eating seeds meanwhile male bird isn't having it. it took 3 weeks doing same routine and then he finally started eating from my hand. now i pet my birds, after every petting and head scratch i give them a treat. Gaining trust is important because they did not sleep at all for first 2 days of bringing home and now they sleep like there is no tomorrow 3. get them use to cage covering. birds LOVEEE privacy when they are most vulnerable and sleep is one of most vulnerable state for birds.

My conure recent broke his leg and im crying non-stop trying to find a vet. He’s okay now and im providing everything my companion needs. I’m with him almost all the time bonding to keep him happy.
I’m really glad that I found something that could help me we did have 2 birds and they loved each other but sadly one of them flew out of the open door and now this bird is sounds depressing and I want to be able to gain it’s trust and be it’s friend because I don’t want it to be lonely
I was about to give up before I saw this vid. my birds are a bit old now, 6 mo, I have them since they were 4 mo, I tried hard to cover all places like important documents, my stuffs and such but they bite everything. this afternoon they bite my important documents and my purse and when I tried to call them they bit me. I was so mad that for the first time I grabbed them and put them in the cage for the whole day. this is the first time for me to have pet birds. I saw a lot of people on instagram can touch their birds, for me they come and eat from my hand but once I try to touch them they'll bite. I was about to give up and thought since I got them their lives is my responsibility so I'll raise them in cage, but after hearing you shed a lot of tears too, I'll try again. Thank you for sharing.

I always have the radio on for mine. He likes music, sings with the artists, and thinks they are singing to him 😂

@@janety101 it's really hard I agree! Mine has started flying pretty well now but doesn't understand windows. She has semi bonded with me and my partner now which helps A LOT, I just worry about her having enough time out the cage as we work full time. She is 6 months now and it is getting quite satisfying as she understands what she should and shouldn't do. Biting is still pretty tricky but she is a Parrotlet who are typically bitey anyway. Do you struggle with yours biting too?

This is so so true. I had a period of pretty bad mental health. A week or so, and I interacted with my parrot way less. When I was feeling normal again and went back to normal routine, he was much less content and trusting, and more skittish. I'm now working to make him feel loved and appreciated again. I feel so bad ;n;

it's reassuring seeing everyone elses frustration and dedication to taming their birds. my quaker died awhile ago, and he was so hand tame. flight call trained, would cuddle under blankets. about as tame as a bird can get. i got a cockatiel and it wants nothing to do with me, which is discouraging on its own, but especially coming from having such a bond with another bird.
I had the same thing with my conures. The first one was so sweet and was with me all day. I got another one after she died and my second one is a very hard biter and I can't do hardly anything with him.

Important to point out - grooming and preening your bird should never stroke, rub, or preen under their neck area. You are sending them hormonal messages this way. Neck up = friends. Below the neck = breeding. Even rubbing their beak to much can send the wrong signals. Holding your hand up for them to snuggle into is fine and all. Just keep an eye on this if it is making them hormonal or not. Good video otherwise.

My female Senegal parrot lays three to four eggs every spring. Will no contact stop her laying eggs? She is very affectionate just before she lays her eggs. She is twenty four years old.
@@beryllaing6992 there are a few things that can trigger hormonal egg laying. Touching a bird under their neck. High fatty seed diet. To much fruit for non fruit birds. Warm mushy foods. To much sunlight, make sure your bird gets 12 to 13 hours of dark quiet sleep. Having nesting places. Like cozee huts or dark corners she keeps finding also do not help. The channel BirdNerdSophie has an amazing video on this subject.
I rescued parrots for over 20 years and have 7 that remained with me. During my active rescue years I provided free public service programs to schools, preschools, nursing homes, libraries, etc. I say this because your videos are amazing and so accurate. What a great service you are providing, even to people who may not own parrots, but have friends who do. We still have children who, now that they are grown are bring their children to us to meet our birds. Because we used and taught ideas that are very similar to your tips, all of our birds are extremely social, even a blue and gold macaw who came to us from a home where the man and been extremely abusive. It took patience and a few years before she even let my husband near her and now many years later she plays with him and was even able to join our programs that had lots of males in the audience !!!
The only tip I would like to add to your video about biting is a really visible sign a bird uses to let you know they are reaching the ‘end of their patience’ is their eyes. The center will shrink suddenly to almost a pin point- that is the time to back off right away. An exception to this file is male eclectus parrots, their eyes will almost glow orange!!!

I got a budgie a couple of weeks ago but we got him and his brother soo they nearly formed a bond but me and my sister quickly separated them and thanks to all you have shown us they have become much tamer and healthier!!! I think my wife and I are the luckiest pet owners as to when we got our Green Cheek Conure it immediately bonded with us and was super friendly. It is very socially and sometimes quite clingy when it comes to sticking around. Can be sometimes nippy, but other than that I can't really complain. It's such a beautiful and cute bird that it didn't take us more than a couple of days to just be happy to always see it around us.
I have finches and I’ve noticed a huge difference with our bond because now I’m attempting to teach them tricks. I love how tips for parrots can be applied to smaller birds, or any animal really.
It's more or less the stuff that animal caretakers learn at zoos. Interact with the animals, but never forcefully and slowly test that safe space everytime you work with or around them. The bonds formed in such a way are just healthy.

Years ago my kids wanted an Australian parakeet, white with red cheeks and a yellow top. The bird shop eventually called us. In a shoe box were several young chicks without proper feathers yet. One immediately attracted my attention. He was up front with an open beak expecting to be fed. I chose him and since my kids were going to school, I had to feed him with warm food every day all the time, so he bonded with me. We had a fantastic relationship. He learnt to sing many a very complex song. Would enter his cage and close the door, when he wanted to go to sleep. Was absolutely telepathic and could identify coming guests two, three minutes before their arrival by say things they usually said to him. An absolutely great experience of bird intelligence, intimacy and a trust worthy relationship.
I lost my birds trust because I wore my mask around her. I never taunted her with my face mask, but I guess that wearing my mask around her while she was in her cage made her territorial. Plus it’s hormone season.. I guess that anything could contribute to her not trusting me anymore. I am at fault for her biting my face painfully. This video gave me some more insight on trust and birds. Thank you!

I’m currently on my winter break and trying to form a bond with my 6 birds again. During the school I wasn’t doing well with my mental health and was focusing more on school than on them. At first I only had to birds and had a good bond by a few months later my aunt gave me 4 more birds and it’s been really stressful so I’m trying my best to regain that bond with them.

It took 8 months for my first ever budgie to come around to me. He would spend a lot of time on his swing in front of the window in the corner of my room and keeping quiet, but I never gave up! I gave him time to fly around my room, read to him almost every day, taught him 'step up' and 'come on', got him used to the bathroom, tried out different toys with him, and when he wouldn't come to me, I would visit and talk to him and kiss him on his lil head. EIGHT MONTHS! There were days when I was really frustrated and thought that he'd never like me, but over time he went out of his way to interact with me in subtle little ways that felt so rewarding each time and made everything ABSOLUTELY worth it. I thought he was shy at first, but he's actually quite a feral lil dino man! And he doesn't do everything I say, mind. He acts out and bites me often, especially now that I recently got him some budgie friends of his own this year and he's more independent... I miss when it was just us, in a way. But I respect his boundaries, and we still absolutely love each other. It's a huge pain and scary when you start out but totally worth it!!
One of my 2 birbs that I started with had a nightfright on a weekend which led to a severe concussion. She was unconcious and had cramps, but I was able to put her in a carton that I filled with litter. I kept taking care of her, speaking softly, lightly petting her all night until she regained coconciousness and was lighter on her feet. She was a biter when I first got her, but after that night she was the sweetest bird ever and I think she recognized my helping hand. I've never been bitten since by any of the birds I have now. The others basically copied her behaviour one at a time. Now they're all fine with me taking them in my hands although that's a thing birds inherently hate. So, I didn't need to do much - just be nice to them and don't overdo it.

I've never owned a bird, but as a cat and dog owner, I gotta say a lot of this applies to any pet regardless of species. The boundaries stuff is especially applicable for cats (90% of "mean cats" are just cats who have learnt that humans won't respect their boundaries), and the training advice is especially applicable to dogs.

It took me about a year to tame my gcc (he was not hand raised and nippy) but now he is so clingy, he wants to be with me all the time xD
Basically I just left the cage open all day unless I had to leave the house.
Then hang his food bowl on the outside of the cage facing my side (where I usually sit at my desk) and just watch him eat everyday and talk to him. After a while he starts playing outside the cage, and eventually he understood the routine of coming out of his cage in the morning and eating on the outside of the cage near me. After a few months I let him sit on my shoulder without touching him, only having him step up and walked around the house and back to the cage, So he got more used to me.
Just have patience follow the tips in the video and involve them in almost everything you do, eating, watching a movie, doing the dishes etc. And slowly you'll see improvement. Think of it as a marathon not a race.
Once they get used to you they want to spend time with you all the time.
This is so interesting. My fully grown cockatiels were raised with and abusive owner and now are extremely aggressive and don’t like to be held or touched at all! Any help? I’ve been looking everywhere but nobody has been able to help me so far :/

I have been doing this and he has a window in the room where his cage is. I saw he was flying to it a couple times and gave him a perch and left some millet over there, he will fly there every morning and eat it. He loves sitting by the window but as soon as I move in any way he flies back 😭 It’s been like 4 months since i’ve had him and he still feels a cautious around me even though i’m with him 24/7 🧍

Sigh. One of my sons found an albino parakeet on our property. She was skinny and cold and the next day the temperature was to drop to the teens with lots of snow and high winds. So, he threw a towel over her once he got close enough, and brought her in after putting her in a have-a-heart cage. While my son posted the find on several sights and made fliers to put up, I went out to buy her a house, food and toys. I saw black under her wings when she preened and found a vet to see her. She had scabs and dried blood that the vet said could be harboring a slight infection. After only 2 days of attempting to bond with her, she and I were faced with the horror of me having to catch her and squirt an antibiotic in her mouth while she yelled at me; for ten days, twice a day. Now she hates and fears me. No one has come forward to claim her and I have grown to love her and intend to keep her. I am learning a lot about what she needs and more then anything, I want to be friends. I am moving slowly, and would appreciate anything you are willing to share to help her through this trauma. My conure is a rescue that was given to a 2 year old for Christmas, he had a girlfriend who sadly passed away, and that’s when we got him. He’s still very skittish of hands and sort of bitey (especially my ears agh I don’t need more peircings) but he’s lovely and our cuddliest bird

I have a lovebird and our bond is quite special. I have him for six years now, he was a rescue found in a garden, he always have been really afraid of fingers. He sleeps on me all the time, wants kisses and cuddles, he wants me to groom him but if I try to touch him with my fingers he's afraid, so I have to scratch him with my nose or my chin, it's not very effective haha. We've started target training but has he is afraid of fingers I can't give him millet for reward (even if it's his jackpot reward).
One of our major issue is that I recently learn that he have a circovirus , the psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD). Every now and then he contract a small infection (usually on the left ear) and I have to give him medicine or clean the discharge from his ear. He hate it, I hate it too, and I have the feeling that our bond brakes apart every time I have to force him to take is medicine. It's quite heartbraking to see him so stressed afterward..
My conure is a Pineapple turquoise Green Cheek Conure (I know it’s a long name) but he looks just like pineapple except his wings are more blue and his tail feathers a tan. Your birds are so cute omg I love them ❤️ 🦜

We rescue animals and help find new homes for them. So it was a surprise when we got a call about a Green Cheek found on the side of the road. We contacted the breeder. Then contacted the people who bought her. Haven't heard back. And its obvious this little girl, ( she told me her name is Cloey ) has been wild for awhile. But after watching your videos( because her and I weren't getting along) found out she has been potty trained. Someone spent time training her. Your videos have helped me with her tremendously. Thank you. I will watch them all.

I agree, my green cheek conure is a rescue bird. He warmed up to me right away! I think it is because he didn’t suffer much trauma. He just flew away from his owner and someone found him and put him in the rescue.

My bird and I went through a phase where he would be super bratty and territorial of bad places in the house and he would bite me when I tried to move him.. And I would get super upset cause it hurts and he's my baby..!
As a training boundary; my bird and I have realized that when I put the "safety gloves on" it means its time to come
I dont even have to use the glove; I just have to hold it in my other hand.
It made things better cause I could get him away from the places he was trying to "set his boundaries" but I also could set mine without getting upset in a way that freaked him out and made our relationship stressed.

Last night was the first night i let my birds fly outside their cage. Since i have a dog in my room most of the time i didn't think of it before, but i made my dog leave my room and let them out. I was so happy to see my birds fly around like they did. They looked so happy it make me happy and it was the first time one of them actually let me touch him without flying away, but he did back up so i took the hint and just gave him some millet spray. But i feel so proud that i am somewhat gaining trust :)

20 years ago I bought a parent raised Sun Conure. I didn't know anything about birds. Every day I would reach into her cage and grab her and she would grab my thumb. I would pet her & talk to her. As weeks went on I would gradually walk further from her cage. She didn't like to be far from her cage. As time went on I had a potty trained bird motivated by praise and attention. Never did I use food as a motivator. Negative behaviors were ignored. Positive behaviors met praise and affection. She has been an excellent pet, albeit one that requires a lot of attention.
you are so helpful I will definitely try these things and you are so correct on everything because one thing I learned from taming my birds was to go at there own pace and time lots of time because I thought it wouldn't take as long as it did. My blue budgie, when I got him he was really scared because he was man handled so when I tried taming him he didn't like it but now I have him and my other budgie and they are pretty tame I just needed this video because I needed to know how to bond with them especially when they are still scared of a lot of things I do around them like cleaning there cage, cleaning the room, but I'm workin on it. This is kind of an older post, so I don't know if I will get any advice, but I'm trying anyway! I have had my green cheek, Miller, for about 12 years (got him when he was a baby.) We have always been well-bonded. About 7 years ago, we adopted an Indian ringneck. It took Miller a while to get used to him, but eventually he tolerated him well enough and they actually share a large cage. The ringneck is obsessed with Miller and only wants to be with him. It has turned out well bc I have had 2 children during then and now and have also been a full-time caregiver for my mom. I was glad Miller wasn't without a buddy to keep him company while I was very busy. I still interacted with him every day, but not the same bc he would go out of his way to bite my kids and my elderly mom. The ringneck is very affable, sweet, and friendly to everyone, so I don't worry about my bond with him. But since having kids, it has been hard to have the same connection with Miller that I used to have. I completely understand why, and I'm not surprised. But I don't know how to fix the bond with the ringneck involved. I feel like Miller is half bonded with me and half with the ringneck (whose name is Jr. by the way). But he is not sweet with me anymore, he bites me all the time. It makes me sad and I want to put in the work to fix it. Should I separate them when I take them out of the cage to spend indovidual time with them? Jr. screams the whole time when he can't see Miller. Any advice appreciated.

I have a tip for acclimating a new bird, especially if it’s not well socialized or is timid.
For our first bird I got a hanging rectangle mosquito net ( not the hoop type ) made to completely enclose the bed.
I pulled the cage up to the side & clipped the net opening to the cage to create a seal . I left the cage door open with various enticements on the bed (millet sprays are a must) & a bird ladder for easy access . I would just chill , watch videos , read , play some bird sounds & music .
BTW, NEVER LEAVE THE BIRD ALONE IN A MOSQUITO NET .
I never had anything happen , but it’s not worth taking the risk.
Before long our new bird was grooming my neck then falling asleep on me.
For our new GCC I got the tent style pop up version of a mosquito net for our bed . OMG ! So much easier & portable!!
This bird is much more socialized , but sadly, was clipped before we got her. The netting on the bed was just a safe way of hanging out with her until we got to know her more. She thinks she can fly and it’s just sad & dangerous, IMO.
I got my mosquito nets on Amazon from Evan Naturals ,but any highly rated netting would work. I really love the pop up but the hanging one is more attractive, if that matters to you.It’s a lot more work, however.
Some nets hang from a hoop thing and spread out . They don’t provide much structure so I avoided that type Just my opinion .
Our birds have cages but they stay open unless there is a situation that could be dangerous, like bringing in groceries or having repairmen coming in & out the house.
Our rabbit doesn’t have a cage at all🐰
Great video and you have lovely birds. My cockatiel Smokey is bonded very well with me (I spend the time and put the effort in) but he's a bird that doesn't seem to want scritches. It's a shame and I'm doing small things to encourage him letting me but at the end of the day I can't force him to let me so I let it be. He's also not a big fan of toys but I discovered he loves playing with buttons. Every bird is different (Despite common behaviours) and it's wonderful seeing their personalities. As you'll already know. These animals aren't pets. They're members of the family #engagednotcaged

This was a really great video! I feel more confident in starting my journy with my new bird ^^ ( who is an asshole but I love him.)
here are my 2 tips that will help you easy with trust gain.
1. assuming it's a new bird or pair first 2 weeks don't try to interact physically. just talk and whistle from a viewing distance. 3rd and 4th week get them use to your hand inside the cage. it might go upto 6th to 7th week until they get use to your hand.
2. this tip works only if first tip is successfully executed, which means your bird doesn't get startled by your hand inside the cage.
i know my birds eat early in morning around 7:30-8am so night before at 12am i remove the seed bowls from cage. at 8am i hold seeds in my palm and little spreaded near fingers and slowly take my hand close to them. if they even slightly running away then i stop moving closer and don't go near at all. put the seed bowl back in cage, try next day. repeat the routine. on 3rd day female bird came close took a quick scan took one seed. 20 seconds later she is on my palm eating seeds meanwhile male bird isn't having it. it took 3 weeks doing same routine and then he finally started eating from my hand.
now i pet my birds, after every petting and head scratch i give them a treat.
Gaining trust is important because they did not sleep at all for first 2 days of bringing home and now they sleep like there is no tomorrow
3. get them use to cage covering. birds LOVEEE privacy when they are most vulnerable and sleep is one of most vulnerable state for birds.

My conure recent broke his leg and im crying non-stop trying to find a vet. He’s okay now and im providing everything my companion needs. I’m with him almost all the time bonding to keep him happy.

I’m really glad that I found something that could help me we did have 2 birds and they loved each other but sadly one of them flew out of the open door and now this bird is sounds depressing and I want to be able to gain it’s trust and be it’s friend because I don’t want it to be lonely
I was about to give up before I saw this vid. my birds are a bit old now, 6 mo, I have them since they were 4 mo, I tried hard to cover all places like important documents, my stuffs and such but they bite everything. this afternoon they bite my important documents and my purse and when I tried to call them they bit me. I was so mad that for the first time I grabbed them and put them in the cage for the whole day. this is the first time for me to have pet birds. I saw a lot of people on instagram can touch their birds, for me they come and eat from my hand but once I try to touch them they'll bite. I was about to give up and thought since I got them their lives is my responsibility so I'll raise them in cage, but after hearing you shed a lot of tears too, I'll try again. Thank you for sharing.
