Just a few clarifications: they're 10 GBe SFP+ ports, not ethernet ports. The adapter is an M.2 to U.2 adapter, not a SATA adapter. And once you enable U.2 for the far most right slot, you should not put an NVMe in it, unless you'd like to make it a brick, since u.2 requires 12 volts to power the drive. Also, this has been tested by ServeTheHome with 48 GB DIMM's of nonbinary DDR5, so it can support 96 GB. I know you mostly focus on gaming, but this is a homelabbers dream mini PC. 3 of them would give you an awesome HCI cluster on Proxmox. Also, happy new year!

Your confusing layer 1 port and media types with layer 2 protocol. Sfp+ can be used with any number of media type modules but they are all still Ethernet. The original Ethernet is actually bnc which uses a coax cable.

Dear @etaprime , Thank you for all your videos, wish you even better 2024.
Two weeks ago, I got miniPC with AMD 7840HS APU, also thanks to your videos about it. And that thing is a blast. For 550USD I have a machine with 32Gb DDR5 5600 and 1Tb SSD.
    Here are my benchmark results:
    Geekbench 6 : SingleCore: 2624, MultiCore: 13034
    FurMark: 33FPS (pulling around 48W)
3D Mark Nigh Raid: GPU score: 36186 CPU score: 14546 (seems like AMD cpu is stronger, but of course iGPU is not vs actual graphic card)
3D Mark FireStrike: GPU score: 8378, Physics score: 27789, combined 2952, good for 60+ FPS in BFV @1080p Ultra settings
3D Mark Time Spy: GPU score: 2976, CPU score: 10484, not really far off that MiniPC
Tomb Raider: 56 FPS for the same settings.

The HDMI port is HDMI 2.0 max out at 4k@60hz so if you want higher refresh rate you will need an adapter for the USB4 type C. Also the second eth is vPro capable so you can remote into it like IPMI but you will need a dummy HDMI plug or connected to a monitor.
Also there is a little switch to toggle between U.2 and M.2 for the first m.2 slot. Do not forget to toggle it back to m.2 if you choose to install an m.2 nvme otherwise you will brick the drive.
The 3 m.2 slots are not all the same, the first one is PCIe-gen 4 4x the second one is PCIe- Gen3 4x the last one is PCI-e Gen3 2x.
Power envelope can be adjusted in the BIOS, it will dial down once a PCI-e card is installed but can be dial up again.
The WiFi card is MediaTek not intel.

@ETA PRIME any chance you can ask minisforum about the A2000 compatibility situation? Seems a little misleading as the only way to fit an a2000 is to find a VERY difficult to source mobile version put onto a desktop PCB, or as they showed in a recent video, swap out the low profile A2000 OEM cooler for a single slot height cooler, which can't be purchased anywhere, and seems to be only able to be custom made. There's a role for mini PCs. This isn't it. If you're engaged in the type of workloads that require an i9, a $700-830 mini PC that you then have to spend an additional $120-150 on a GPU for, just bite the bullet and build a mini ITX rig. Will they be a little bigger? Yes, but you'll actually be able to use the RTX A2000 and other dual slot cards, which Minisforum is being kind of slippery about advertising support for when they know they won't fit unless you buy a riser cable and run it topless, which only further increases the cost of this. Plus you'll have regular BIOS updates, good manufacturer support (my experience with multiple mini PC OEMs has not been great overall), and you'll be able to upgrade bits and pieces as needed instead of putting your entire $700 mini PC off to the side and buying a new one. And, again, personal experience only, maybe it's the excess heat, maybe it's a product of mini PCs coming off of the same production lines and just being slapped with different brand names while retaining all the same problems, whatever the case may be, a mini PC is not going to last as long as a traditional desktop PC. I don't know how long you keep your mini PCs in service ETA Prime, but my experience is that the lower-end Celeron units tend to die in 6-12 months (if not out of the box), the higher-end i7/Ryzen 7 units tend to be unusable in 12-18 months, but the midrange i3 and i5 (and Ryzen equivalents) hold up...sweet spot in terms of manufacturing quality and thermal demands?
Mini PCs are great if you just need a streaming PC, a HTPC, a home server, something lightweight like that, or even a basic low-end home desktop or secondary rig. A $830 daily driver with an i9? No. It just doesn't make sense. I just went onto PCPartPicker and in the space of 3 minutes slapped together a mini ITX system with a R7 7700 that matches these specs but is housed in Thermaltake Core V1. Larger, yes, but still compact compared to most MicroATX cases, capable of supporting coolers that allow CPUs to turbo for more than a few seconds, and quieter as a result. Point being, if you need a level of power that makes an i9, even a mobile i9, make sense as a daily driver, you need to be looking at ITX options you can build yourself for less than what a much louder, hotter, throttled mini PC will run you.
Mini PCs are not bad products. I've owned several, and I'm currently using an N95 unit as an HTPC and a 5600H unit as a secondary system/backup storage box in my home office, but they are not capable replacements for gaming or professional desktops, and they need to stop being marketed as such.

a server running multiple containers and VMs could use that i9 while running headless, not all cpu intensive tasks need graphics.

    • @aisle9
      @aisle9 9 месяцев назад +1

@@IsoMacintosh Maybe the point wasn't clear: there is no reason to spend $830 on something with poor QA, poor manufacturer support and a short shelf life. High-end mini PCs are worse performers at the same price as even ITX desktops. This has a mobile i9 that it can't cool, and ETA Prime quickly brushed that under the rug with the equivalent of "it's good enough".
If your $830 PC can't cool the CPU running it, and an $830 ITX PC with the same performance could, you bought the wrong PC, and reviewers are doing you and everyone else a disservice by continuing to plug a company with poor design decisions and shady business practices. It ultimately calls the reviewer's own business practices into question.

@@aisle9As the owner of 3 MinisForum mini-pc's, I have feedback for you. I have beat the crap out of the units I have purchased with different OS, different SSD's and different RAM. Benchmarked and stress tested the snot out of them. If you run these within their design & performance envelope they will hold up and last. But if you attempt to push beyond their specifications your results can vary and you will shorten their life or outright brick them. They are low cost, but attempt to represent high value. It's when people try to make them something they aren't they stumble. MinisForum does not pretend they are a Tier 1 tech provider and you do not see them exclaiming their super warranties. But they do offer adequate support if done in the correct forum and with a good attitude. Mini-pc designs are required to balance certain features to stay within its cost and power budgets, but still carry a minimal level of flexibility. As long as one can stay within those parameters, then they have a product for you. Yes, anyone can go build some ITX whatever, but many don't want too. They just want it to work.
As for ETA and MinisForum, ETA reviews *a lot* of third tier product, much from AliXpress. It's not unusual for any vendor to send a reviewer like ETA product in advance. If the product is average in totality, he will say so. He only reviews it's ability to run games and emulation.
As for me, I don't even game...I use ETA's reviews to assess mini platforms to run virtualization in extreme conditions, which is exactly what ETA does, he pushes games as high as the equipment allows and that informs me. I don't think ETA is in anyone's pocket but on the flip side, MinisForum is no one's stooge, they get great feedback on these forums on what customers do with their stuff or what people are looking for.

Edit: 1:55 Oh dang, its a 4x slot, can only add 2 M.2 cards unless this slot supports 8x down to 2x2x2x2x which would still be more than fast enough considering there are 3 more on the back

ON the subject of RAM, while only 64GB is listed as supported currently, this machine should support 96 and 128GB dimms when they come out for a total of up to 256GB, assuming they dont decide to hold back those higher capacities so DDR6 looks better.
Keep in mind that more than 32GB SODIMM will likely result in speeds slower than 4000MT/s with very poor timings, making it effectively slower than DDR4, but worth it if you need the extra RAM.

What an impressive mini PC. I don't like the idea of not being able to close the cover with a dual slot card. However, if it can run the A2000... it can run a ADA 4000 SFF. Even though I'm not a big fan of the 6400, this would make a killer emulation box. Maybe we'll get some single slot 3050 6GB LP cards. The one thing I wish is the chassis didn't look so cheap.

I'm expecting it to fall between the 1650 equivalents and the A2000, in terms of performance. Here's to hoping they don't sell for more than $170. A machine seemingly trying to be ahead of it's time. Some of the reply comments do seem to potentially poke holes in the review, which should have some clarification, otherwise, I think it may actually stall many a prospective purchase.
But as far as the ahead of time specs are concerned, it does offer a small amount of future proofing, even though the CPU will always be seen as the limiting factor in the future.
But it certainly packs in a whole lot of I/O, even if you can't realistically yet take advantage of it in meaningful ways.
So the final question for me, is one of value. How does this compare, price wise, with a SFF PC with the same CPU but specs and I/O more commonly found amongst the rest of the pack today.
Certainly very intriguing and nice to see a vendor wanting to give new tech to average users, instead of the Corporate Big Tech drip, drip feed that is all too common and detrimental to actual progress, with only corporate profit margins being of benefit.
Although we still see use of U 2.0 ports, I am glad to see that a vendor places them in the most useful place, the front, where they are almost certainly going to be used to plug in keyboards/mice/controllers, where line of sight for 2.4Ghz dongles is always preferable for consistent signal strength.

Some people have done it and drilled or cut holes in the top over the CPU & GPU fans for better airflow. Some have even 3D printed a new top cover/ lid for this upgrade. It'd be nice if you could do a video on it showing newer games running on it. I've seen a couple people do it with A2000 single slot mods. & it'd also be cool to see someone do it with a RX 6400 using Chimera OS. Which that I haven't seen yet (you'd be the 1st).
