  • Japan Erects Wall Blocking Mount Fuji View to Ward off Tourists | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Mount Fuji is Japan’s highest mountain. But soon, its view will be blocked. Japan is erecting an 8-foot wall to ward off tourists. Because tourists misbehave and overcrowd a popular photo spot near Mount Fuji. Japan is witnessing "overtourism" amid a travel boom. 33 million people are expected to visit Japan this year. In a first, Japan saw more than three million tourists in march. But this nation is hardly the only one. Tourism will break records globally in 2024. It will add $11.1 trillion to the global economy. But at the same time, overtourism will create an array of problems including overcrowding, infrastructure problems, and soaring housing costs. So many countries are battling overtourism with over-the-top solutions. Palki Sharma tells you how.

It was just in March that Japan banned tourists from certain streets in Kyoto - the ones with teahouses where geishas work. Too many ill-behaved tourists. They also are limiting the number of people who can climb Mt. Fuji each day (4,000 people) and are now charging a fee.

You are right. But tourism has it's own problems as well. Mostly local people of the tourists area face problems like too much garbage people throw randomly, expensive markets, noise, too much unexpected traffic and much more. In india, authorities should be concerned about these problems as well with solutions only then they should promote more tourism.

Countries must come up with multiple solution for over-tourism. But tourists needs to keep their manners and show respects to local residents and all pubic and private areas.
Some tourists stealing hotels’ belongings (pillow, tv, electronics and valuables). Packing multiple meals from breakfast buffet or pretending they paid for their meals…
Tourists grabbing people’s arm with rare outfits whose on their way to work, just so the tourists can take multiple photos. Eyes being flashed, outfits ruined and showing up late to work is not pleasing at all.
Cheery blossom trees take years to recover or they can easily get sick from an injury. It’s really heart-breaking to hear some tourists would shake and break branches for photos of good memories in Japan.

Sorry to burst your bubbles. Tourists aren’t the boss. You visit a country , respect their rules and culture. Don’t bring your stupidity and arrogance with you.

not a lot of countries consider tourists as guests, like here we say "atithi devo bhavah"... and we welcome them equal to a diety/god... but for them, tourists are just some trash people coming from trash countries, spreading trash and creating chaos... they have their own sets of high standards which tourists could not match, or are of lower blood lines. for them, tourists are nothing... its their ideology, we cannot impose our ideologies to them... they are like that.

Like imported car, India should impose 70 to 100% tax on foreign pleasure tour and utilize that to develop Indian tourist spots to attract foreign tourist.

no one comes in India except healthcare, spirituality and to get 1M views on RUclips. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are black listed countries for foreigners. Reason is overcrowding, unclean toilet and garbage. India is losing foreign tourists. Also india counts indian immigrant and nri tourists as foreigners. The number showed by govn is fake cuz indian immigrants, NRI are not foreigners.

Right now I am in Japan and Mt. fuji view can be seen uninterrupted from 10 km away from every direction if sky is not cloudy. I can see Japanese govt is only trying to increase tourism in everyway and not discouring it. I don’t understand why this incident became a news in India. I think Japan is trying to control the crowd and maintain the traffic situation to the normal and its a good step taken. Tourists has 100+ spots to cover much beautiful pic of Mt. fuji.

They are blocking the view because the visitors are very rude to the locals, blocking the traffic. Invading the privacy of the nearby building. Too much hype of the location, overcrowding is not a good thing as well.

All countries should ban the people who take pictures and disturb others in public places. We go to see the place but people with cameras(be it phone cameras or DSLRs) block the way and feel like they own that place. They disturb others from walking freely. Nowadays these people are disturbing in the gyms also.

maybe they dont have a business mindset in the first place, maybe they just want peace... obviously they could have developed a dedicated view-points/selfie points for those tourists long time ago, but they didnt... they could have easily charged some bucks for using those view-points, and made small shops around it for making a small ecosystem, but they didnt. they only wanted peace and money, not the people.
