Thank you so much for providing this video in real time (and giving us, the viewers, the option to speed up the video if we like). Also, thank you for taking the time to create a helpful and engaging voiceover instead of adding music like 99% of the art videos out there. I’m not against the music with videos at high speed, but I usually don’t find them helpful or engaging. I got so much out of this video by being able to watch, and hearing you explain, what your doing. 💛

This inspires me to get back to my art goal of persevering past the 'ugly phase' with a piece! 😁 I think I'll go back through my sketch books and see what I can finesse. 😊
Barn Owls are funny because they look like chunky birds but they're actually really light, mostly feather and look comically skinny after a bath! 🤣 I used to volunteer with a raptor conservation charity here and we'd do a lot of outreach work so I handled quite a few captive bred owls that we took to educational days, etc. They're one of my favourite birds. 😊

I love when you said, “the best art supplies to use, are the ones you already have,” that’s certainly true, and something I know I need to hear more often! Most artists probably have the same affliction, the constant seeking out new and more art supplies, and sometimes, for me anyway, the struggle is real when realizing, I have more than I need on hand and can produce infinite pieces with what’s already in my stash. And yet after watching your video, I still feel the need to go ahead and price out those Neocolor 1s… (I don’t have those, and they look fun! 🤔)

I love this supply combo, it's definitely one of my favorites. And I also like to work all over the picture, rather than fully finishing each area bit by bit. Im so amazed how you start off and how it comes to life and turns out!! I feel like, when I used to draw and color in my art projects, I messed it up and ended up just leaving it looking unfinished. I know if you don’t keep practicing you don’t get better. My arthritis don’t help me in my art but it is relaxing at times and still do it just not as much as I would like to. I do small art projects though.

Lindsay, the painting is so wonderful. Loved learning how to mix different supplies and how to bring out those undertones which makes the picture so interesting. I think there is a “training of the eye” to be able to identify the undertones which I am not yet seeing the same way you do. Going to keep working on it because it is one of the reasons why I love your paintings. Thanks for another excellent lesson.

Lindsay this is absolutely beautiful.I love watching you paint, draw etc and over the years I have recommended so many people to your Chanel because of the way you explain things so well and it really helps. You are a great artist and unlike many others who just show them painting you explain the reason you do this why you do that and how to.In my eyes your a star.Sadly I don’t work as often as I should.Lack of confidence and pain. But you do inspire so many young artists I am sure. And the best part is you can do just about any medium as well as draw anything. So that make you a great artist .No set style ,not just drawing one thing..Keep up the great work.Love n Light 🥰

I am so glad you told people about Neo 1. These are the most under appreciated art supply in our coloring world!. I just bought them and my ONLY complaint is there are not MORE. Maybe if we all get them and demand more Caran D'ache will make a bigger set. I bought them exactly for the reason you stated, I wanted something like Prisma Art Stix. I was late to the party and did not get in on them before they were discontinued and felt there had to be something on the market as good if not better...they exceeded all my expectations, and I don't understand why they are not more popular in our community.

I love owls! If I could own one I would...but I guess a original painting will have to do. Not all owls are really big, but the big ones are the coolest. Here in the pacific northwest we have the notorious spotted owl. They caused a huge bruhaha in the late 80's early 90's because they were declared to be protected. I was new up here then and of course pictured a giant bird of prey. I grew up on the coast of southern California, what did I know of owls? The spotted owl, protected bird of prey or public enemy number one, depending which side of the isle you were on is only about eight inches tall. The cutest little owl you ever did see.

I bought some of the sand grain but don't actually love it for soft pastel. You maverick you for using it with watercolor... I'ma have to try that! That Maimeri palette is so odd, but I think it was meant for portraits and somehow that didn't make it into the marketing. From that standpoint, the colors make sense.

FYI - I went to order the Brush & Pencil items from Jerry's (slightly cheaper than Blick); one of them has the hazardous symbol (I think it is the Touch Up Texture), so if you don't order $75 and get the free shipping rate, you have to pay UPS rate for shipping "hazardous" materials -- $21.99 for 3 items with a product total of $37. The flat $9.99 rate doesn't apply to hazardous symbol items. DEEP SIGH. I guess I will go to Blick over the weekend. I am lucky enough to have a store in the ATL area.

I had the Marabu crayons in my Amazon cart and my wife substituted the KingArt Wax crayons, they look just like the Marabu twisting crayons and so far I cannot tell the difference! they use the same pigments but maybe more filler to extend the sticks? They do save my more expensive Neocolor II's when I am just practicing and trying to keep my eye hand coordination from disappearing! I am glad you spent the time to bring this to the rest of your viewers! I did order a couple of the sand pads from Canson how can you resist at just $5! OK $5.67 that is only 14 cents a sheet! Crazy cheap! I like it so far just need to be brave and try the soft pastels now, Maybe I will post something if I do. Thanks for sharing your owl with us all!

    • @thefrugalcrafter

I glad you got some. It's acid free and has no optical brightness so you should have no qualms selling work on it. I don't see Any difference between the marabou art crayon and any of the gel crayons I have used from craft to kids brands. I think it is the same product at vastly different price points. The craft industry has been famous for charging artist grade prices for white labeled kids products. When you think about what you get for the price the neocolor crayons aren't bad.

This was thrilling to watch, Lindsay! So much so, I bought your class to learn more. Can't wait to create these gorgeous, exciting pieces too! QUESTION: I was gifted "Himi Silky Crayons," and have NO idea if they'd translate well into the owl painting. Ever hear of them? Thanks SO much!

Give them a try and see! You might need to add water to get pencil to stick on top. Try both ways and have fun:)

Hi Lindsay, your owl is beautiful! I am ordering the Neocolor 1’s and the paper today. I do have Dr PH Martins Bleedproof white, do you think that would be ok rather than the titanium white and texture? Thanks

Sure. It might flake off if you try and for over it but if you are gentle with it you are probably fine.

have it in hd quality no problems if it does feel dark on the eyes try movingup the brightness of the screen a bit. Im as blind as a weasle in night times so I have a dark background and white letters. But there are several options in you pc settings to ajust value and brightness if you experience a wobbely or to dark setting in youtube.

I enjoyed watching this one so much. Would Prismacolor premier pencils work in place of the Derwent drawing set or are they too soft? My daughter who's name is also Lindsay, absolutely loves owls. I think I will try this with what I have. Hopefully it will turn out well enough to give to her for Mother's Day. Thanks for sharing. You are so inspiring, I've been watching you for years.

They should work fine. Maybe pull out the muted earthy tones and DIY yourself a drawing set!

@@thefrugalcrafter Thank you! I have the full set of Neocolor ii. I may just go ahead and buy the 40 set of Neocolor i and the Derwent drawing set of 24. I've been eyeing the drawing set for a few weeks. I love muted tones. Decisions, decisions. LOL!

Hi Lindsey! Do you think I can use the Jane Davenport crayons? Not the water soluble ones the ones that are more waxed base like a crayon but to the 10th power?

What’s the difference between Neocolor I and Neocolor II? I have the octagon shaped Crayola Colored Pencil Sticks ( not to be confused with the twistable stix). They are woodless colored pencils and come in a 12 or 24 set . The lay down is different than their colored pencils. Softer and more vibrant. Great for backgrounds.

Neocolor2 are watersoluble but neocolor 1 resists water. Your crayola colored pencil sticks would be like neocolor 1.

Lindsay what tape do you suggest an artist use to tape down the paper? That wont pull the paper away

Manley has some nice wax crayons but I think they are softer than my Neocolor 1 crayons. Have you experimented with plastic crayons? I was recently happy to discover they are great for resist work.

No I haven't heard of them. I'll look them up. Are they like oil pastels?

@@thefrugalcrafter I passed on plastic crayons for a long time because I thought they were just a neater variation of regular crayons. I have found they are better layered like color pencils. They have nearly zero buildup but still resist wet media. I sprang for the Kupi/Coupy set but have found the Deli to be just as good. I even think Bic and Kupi are the same item repackaged. The bottom line is that they color beautifully. I use them underneath and on top of watercolor and gouache.

How do you sharpen your drawing pencils from Derwent. I have. Hard time sharpening them.

I use an electric sharpener by Jarlink. Make sure it will take pencils up to 8mm

Hi Lindsay what colour pencil do you think is soft enough to lay on top of oil pastel for detailing? Perhaps an international brand I could find in India?

Hi there hope you are well. I need a question off the topic. You did a show on these poppies and you used a clear stamp. Did you design the poppies and if you did, did you make the stamp? If so can I make my own designs and make a stamp for it? Is this possible? Sorry for butting in but the show was done 7 yrs ago so I didnt know if you check then
