The foundation of the Christian faith isn't built on a literal translation of the Bible, and there's no reason why it needs to be. Jesus is the Word of God, and He said not a single letter of the law would disappear until heaven and earth disappear. You make a mistake in claiming that the law and the prophets are in conflict with Jesus' words. When Jesus says, “You have heard it was said...”, He is sometimes talking about the law and sometimes He isn't. When He talks about adultery, He is referring to the law, and when He does so He confirms the law and goes even further by telling His listeners they should not even think about committing adultery. But as for hating our enemies, He's not referring to the law. Why? Because the law doesn't tell the Israelites to hate anyone. It's just a common, erroneous belief, like the erroneous belief that rich people are favored by God. While Jesus says we should love our enemies, He never once suggests that this means we should ever withhold justice, even from our enemies. If Elijah called down fire on his enemies and it happened, then it's only because it was God's justice. Read Exodus 23:4-5 and ask yourself if God is instructing people to hate their enemies. Read about how David treated Saul and ask yourself if God didn't reward him. How do people walk away from Christianity without walking away from Christ? Isn't that what Christianity is, following Christ? How does believing that some stories are allegorical make you not a Christian? Where is that written? If someone tells you that you aren't really a Christian if you believe the Earth is older than 6,000 years they are wrong, because the bible doesn't teach that. In Matthew 22:29 Jesus said the Sadducees were in error because they didn't know the scriptures. Doesn't it say in Luke 24:45 that Jesus opened the minds of His followers so they could understand the scriptures? The Gospel is powerful, because God is powerful. But not powerful enough to make animals walk onto a boat? Or the make the world flood? Or make a donkey talk? Or part the Red Sea? Or heal the sick? Or raise the dead?

This message is growing in popularity rapidly. One of the fastest growing takes on Christianity.
The more room you make for one to have a flexible faith the more room you make to encourage others to be their own gods
