I`m a 49 year old man . And since day one this song came out from johnny cash my heart just breaks , It`s beautiful and also heartbreaking. This song will last forever.......
If this song doesn't tear your heart out, you haven't got one. When Johnny Cash's daughter heard it, she said "it sounds like you're saying goodbye", he replied "I am".
I wasn't family but I remember it airing on mtv2 when they still played music...I cried because I was a huge fan and I knew he was telling us all he was going soon
When I was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s one of the first things I did was to write up my will while still of sound mind. I told my wife that I would like this song played at my funeral for my son.
I'm 76 years old. I remember Christmases with my four grandparents, my parents, my two older brothers and their wives, and my little sister. My sister is the only one of them still alive. The older you get the more deaths among your family and friends. This song reminded of them all. My wife is still alive but can't walk, moves in a wheelchair and sleeps most of the time. Sometimes she doesn't remember who I am. Old age isn't fun, it's sad.
Take care Leonard. One day the man will come for us all. All we can really do is live as good a life as we can - and what that means is up for us to decide. I hope all is well with you and your family.
I love her reaction, you can tell she feels the spirit of the song and Her genuine tears scream out the universal commonality of the true pain of loss.
It's amazing how someone like Trent Reznor could write a song so personal and emotional and then Johnny Cash could relate to it so deeply and make it even better.
As a fan of both Cash and Nails, i was so happy when i saw his cover on MTV, i had that song played at my moms funeral and everyone was touched, many asked me what was that song
When Trent Reznor wrote this song, he was singing it from a different place. It was dark and brooding. And then comes JR Cash. It was as though he was singing his eulogy. He knew his time was short, and this was the song to be remembered for all time. The end of this video always hits me pretty hard. When he closes the lid on the piano and wipes it down, it's as if to say "Goodbye". There will never be another Johnny Cash.

The piano chords striking like a ticking clock as his time grew nearer, slowly getting louder. Everything ends and we should all be so grateful to leave such a legacy.
For those who got emotional... Here is how I will make you cry even harder: His daughter heard this and said it was almost like he was saying goodbye. He answered that he was. This song was recorded not that long before his death.
Trent Reznor, the frontman for Nine Inch Nails and writer of the song, wrote it in his mid to late 20's while fighting depression. He was initially hesitant to the cover, and hearing for the first time felt almost violated because of the personal meaning the song had for him. After seeing this video though, Reznor has been on record saying, "This is not my song anymore." Very powerful and moving. I can't watch this video without feeling the tears welling up n my eyes.
It was not depression sir he was battling addiction. He said it himself. It was the darkest of days for him, his words. He wanted and was hoping to die. He had become a slave to heroin.

The Johnny Cash video for the single was recorded in February of 2003. June Carter Cash, his 2nd wife is, the woman on stairs; also a singer who toured with him and sang with him on several songs and is the person played by Reese Witherspoon alongside Joaquin Phoenix, in the biopic film of Cash and Carter, Walk the line. She had come over to check on her husband that day as his health was not so good. It was her that Cash attributed to rescuing him from his drug and Alcohol addiction when she married him. June Carter Cash passed away a few months after the video recording in May of 2003 and a bereaved Johnny Cash followed her a few months later in the September. The song is by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and is about his battle with addiction and depression. Cash also an addict and alcoholic for much of his early life spending time in Jail on half a dozen occasions for possession. The song encompasses the way both musicians life threads are woven together and entangled across the decades between them, so much so that Trent when he saw the video said it was like loosing his Girlfriend as the song had become Johnny's. Johnny was a campaigner for prison reform and the rights of Native Americans and much of his material reflected his own passions and darker past. Johnny Cash's star declined in the 80s and the Museum to his life with the smashed Gold Disk on the Floor, used as one of the backdrops to the video, ended up being shuttered. In the 1990s Rick Rubin of American Recordings more of a Rap, Punk and Metal, producer sought out Cash to record on their label, and offered Cash complete artistic freedom. With them his career revived and he brought out a his most critically acclaimed albums, the America series, bringing Cash to a new younger audience starring on The Simpsons and Headlining at Glastonbury in 1994. The 4th and penultimate album of the America series from which this is one of several Hit Singles: American IV: The Man Comes Around, was released in November of 2002 and he was still working on his final Album that was released posthumously.

He didn't make it a new song, but a new perspective. He took the song and feeling of a young man brooding in thoughts of despair at the person they felt they were and would be and, as an old man at the end of his life, changes the context and therefore feeling to one who is reflecting in despair at a life of regret for having been the person the young man feared he was. It just hits so much harder as a lesson from an old man on his regrets, instead of a young mans fears.

I think the emotional impact is so heavy because we see our own story in this. Differences of course. I'm 65 so I've enjoyed Johnny Cash all my life. I've watched this countless times and still get teary eyed.
This is the only song that explains my experience with terminal cancer at 34. To hear other people from around the world feel this same gut feeling truly means music can reach others when words fall short. It's the build-up at the end then that last ring of the piano that really hits me hard. I grew up listening to nin and heard this before, but the way Johnny brings that touch of palpable grief, can't be done by no one else.
My daughter passed away from SIDS at 2 months old. I've lost all my grandparents and parents. My dear friends Michael and Jess. Basically, all I had was my sister. We've always been so close... since my cancer diagnosis in November 2022 and then my terminal diagnosis in March, she has been acting differently. In April I found out she is doing drugs.. speed.. when I confronted her she got mad at me and told me to off myself. She was the last person I ever expected to hurt me like that. I may only have a few months left and I spend them alone. This time last year I was planning to be with my fiancé in the Netherlands for the holidays until I got sick. He had just started his master's degree in mechanical engineering. He couldn't handle the pressure from university and my illness... In May, he choose to stay in Edinhoven and finish his degree. We still talk about every day now but it's not the same. So it's been one hell of time for me. Somehow I'm still holding my head up and going forward. Which reminds me of the song "Only God Knows Why" by Kidd Rock. I'll give that a listen after this.
When she started shedding tears, it really hit me. This song usually will bring me to tears, but seeing her just did something to me. Like, someone else gets that lyric. Thank you guys!
This is the first of many musical reviews eactions I've viewed on RUclips. But never before have I ever witnessed another reviewer literally say nothing throughout the whole song being reviewed. Your faces expressed things perhaps words could not. It was perfect. Thank you, so much.
I've never cried for this song but watching her brought tears. A raw reaction. True. No matter what race you're running in we're all destined for the same outcome. May we all live life before rotting in our own paradise. Happy Thanksgiving Y'all!
Very true, but there's also another dimension to the subtext Johnny is singing. He's also speaking of his regrets for all the people he hurt and drove away because of his past behavior. When you approach the end of your life, your regrets for the mistakes you can never take back loom large.
When that first tear fell from your right eye i wish i could have given u a hug. This song perfectly explains dealing with a loss. The feeling of emptiness, hurt, and thinking u would give everything u have just to have that special person back.
It's a rare song that one can never walk away from after it has found you, it just will never leave. This is one of those songs. It seeks out every crevasse of self-hatred, shame, and regret in your soul, solidifies in those areas, and becomes forever a part of you.
He took this song and made it his forever. There is no shame in the tears. They were rolling down my cheeks the first time I heard this and a number of times after. His life wasn't as bleak as this song portrays when it was recorded, but he had to know he had limited time left. It was his last video.
I felt the same when i first heard this song. The lyrics gripped me and the music and videography was perfectly done. I was never a big fan of Johnny Cash's music with the exception of a couple of songs only. But I must say that this song brought me to tears and made me reflect on some of my past, my family, the ups and downs, the fact that you are not in control of all but more importantly, how to look towards the future. When he said" and you could have it all, my empire of dirt" made me think that with all that he has accomplished in his life and career, there's is nothing you can take in the end. Love who you are, enjoy what you have and be grateful for those who you care about and care for you. Thank you to Johnny Cash, this amazing version of "Hurt" and for allowing us all to get a glimpse into his world.
I’m getting up in years and been a Johnny Cash fan since I was a kid in the 60’s. I’ve lost so many friends, family and my beloved wife. Still have a few friends, very few, and my lovely daughter who actually saved me from cancer. I have lived a full and adventurous life. I’m tired now and I’m ready.😢
I’ve heard this song hundreds of times and it still gets me in my heart every time! Knowing of his life, this song is so touching. I highly recommend you listening to “The Man In Black”. John had his issues but, he had a heart of gold!
I think the person that he grieves losing the most in this song is himself, hence the last line, "If I could start again, a million miles away, I would keep myself. I would find a way". Such a tragic line.
I'm not sure if that is the intended meaning. I read it as meaning that even if he was given a brand new start, it's so much a part of his nature that he couldn't help but become the same person he despises again - in spite of his best efforts, he would find a way to ruin everything.
A beautiful couple reacting to a beautiful song. One of the best reactions I have seen. It's great to see the man in black still touching the young lives of those willing to listen. Yall got a sub.
In my opinion, this is the best cover song ever written. When the original artist states publicly that this song is no longer his, you know that the cover artist nailed it.
What really hits me is that this video/song was his last to be put out, Cash was in vary poor health and died 7 months later. When I hear this song I hear him saying how he would give everything to be with the ones he lost, to have more time here, to do things over and that he regrets that he's going to fail those he loves and hurt them because one day he will die and have to leave them.
This is my first time watching you guys react to something and I’m very impressed at the fact that there is no bs. You guys aren’t playing a part like a lot of other reaction channels. The pure emotion is natural and not forced. Thx guys. Keep up the good work.
Thank you both. You come from a culture that respects elders and that is so beautiful to me. He looked back at his life and was remorseful for what he did. You felt his pain and let it move through you. That is so beautiful. Thank you so much.
This song crosses all genres and does what it's supposed to do, invoke thoughts on your own life, loved ones, and the emotions he felt at the time. Music is so powerful.
Yep. Everyone goes away in the end. I lost my mom to Azheimer's. I lost my dad to cancer. I lost my cousin to cancer. I lost my uncle to cancer. I lost my sister to cancer. At some point in your life, you begin to see how fragile your life is. Johnny Cash certainly understood that too.

As she started crying...I started crying. This song is so very emotional for me, but seeing it impact someone else like this makes it so much more poignant. Thank you.
Its profound although its the clearest thing in life. We will die. I think its the raw honesty in that line that gets us. No “we will live on in memory“ or “we will be united with our loved ones some day“ sugar coating or religious mumbojumbo. Just plain truth.
I love your open and honest reactions. I cannot hear this song without crying. I will be 60 next year and so much of this song about regrets resonates with me. Thanks for sharing.

I don't know what to say, I hope you are still with us. @@jrmckim
I hope you’re still here
When she started shedding tears, it really hit me. This song usually will bring me to tears, but seeing her just did something to me. Like, someone else gets that lyric. Thank you guys!
This is the first of many musical reviews
eactions I've viewed on RUclips.
The woman's reaction in this video broke me. So beautiful emotionally. A great reaction!
He's saying all he accomplished for nothing...
When you have no one to share it with.
FAMILY IS EVERYTHING!
Very true, but there's also another dimension to the subtext Johnny is singing. He's also speaking of his regrets for all the people he hurt and drove away because of his past behavior. When you approach the end of your life, your regrets for the mistakes you can never take back loom large.
Wrong. Friends are everything. Family is just the crooked crowd that you were born into.
@@nieselpriem Family can be chosen family too.
When that first tear fell from your right eye i wish i could have given u a hug. This song perfectly explains dealing with a loss. The feeling of emptiness, hurt, and thinking u would give everything u have just to have that special person back.
You both have BEAUTIFUL HEARTS
It's a rare song that one can never walk away from after it has found you, it just will never leave. This is one of those songs. It seeks out every crevasse of self-hatred, shame, and regret in your soul, solidifies in those areas, and becomes forever a part of you.
He took this song and made it his forever. There is no shame in the tears. They were rolling down my cheeks the first time I heard this and a number of times after. His life wasn't as bleak as this song portrays when it was recorded, but he had to know he had limited time left. It was his last video.
her tears are globlets of gold
Their energy immediately reacted to the impact and seriousness of the song. Shows you how powerful this song was.
Also shows they listen with their hearts
I’m getting up in years and been a Johnny Cash fan since I was a kid in the 60’s. I’ve lost so many friends, family and my beloved wife. Still have a few friends, very few, and my lovely daughter who actually saved me from cancer. I have lived a full and adventurous life. I’m tired now and I’m ready.😢
It’s a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song, but Johnny immortalised it.
Agree with the feeling of your emotions, and you’re both beautiful humans ❤️
I read that after Reznor saw this performance he said "It's his song, now."
They also used this song for the movie "Logan" - of Marvel's X-Men series.
Your beautiful reaction...priceless.
THE most genuine reaction video ive seen. let the song play and talk AFTER the song
I’ve heard this song hundreds of times and it still gets me in my heart every time! Knowing of his life, this song is so touching. I highly recommend you listening to “The Man In Black”. John had his issues but, he had a heart of gold!
Her reaction is my reaction every time I hear this song. And I've been listening to it for 18 years.
I think the person that he grieves losing the most in this song is himself, hence the last line, "If I could start again, a million miles away, I would keep myself. I would find a way". Such a tragic line.
Would mean more if he had written it.
@@andrewharrington6953 It's his song, Trent even said it.
@@TheEvilWithinKevin But the words are
Trent's not his
I'm not sure if that is the intended meaning. I read it as meaning that even if he was given a brand new start, it's so much a part of his nature that he couldn't help but become the same person he despises again - in spite of his best efforts, he would find a way to ruin everything.
@@TheEvilWithinKevin you're taking that literal, and that's not what Trent meant.
This is my first time seeing peoples reaction to this kind of amazing singing..loved this video and there reaction, especially hers.
His song and your reaction are both so real and authentic. thank you. He has a children's album. I cried when when I heard
Best exit EVER!!!! .. I was his nurse didn’t know who he was, he was under alias.. soooooo charming I was 19-20
A beautiful couple reacting to a beautiful song. One of the best reactions I have seen. It's great to see the man in black still touching the young lives of those willing to listen. Yall got a sub.
In my opinion, this is the best cover song ever written. When the original artist states publicly that this song is no longer his, you know that the cover artist nailed it.
Johnny closes the piano like closing a coffin, it's a heartbreaking moment.
It always hurts 😢
His wife had recently died
She hit the nail on the head about this song!! Bless them both!
One of his daughters said 'It's like you are saying goodbye' and Cash replied, "I am."
beautiful reaction god bless you both
This is my first time watching you guys react to something and I’m very impressed at the fact that there is no bs.
Music is so powerful.
i love the way you - both younger people can see and feel the emotion. Great reaction
So sorry for your loss!
So sorry for your losses brother! Stay strong! We're here for you!
i lost both of my grand parents to cancer and my aunt to cancer as well
Trent Reznor understood it and should get more recognition for writing the words. Lost both my parents two years apart on the same day, doesn't get easier bud.
@@andrewharrington6953 i lost my dad on april 7th 2017 and my family have had problems ever since.i have had stress problems and trouble controlling my anger,my mum has ptsd because of it and cries nearly every day and my brother has stress too
I have to give credit to the people that edited this lovely... touching piece of art. Well done.
Same here . that moment. everyone goes away in the end. its a fragile raw human moment for most people i would imagine. me certainly. lovely reaction. thank you. J C's delivery and depth is immense here.
This is one of the most amazing creations I have ever seen and heard. To call it a song or music video just doesn’t to cut it. It is one of the most beautiful creations ever. It is so perfect and hits so hard. It hits me just as hard now as it did the first time I ever experienced it and every time in between.
Johnny's cover of this still gives me chills, every single time.
I love you, guys. This is all the life is about.
I heard this song today the first time....I was literally crying and just found your reaction
“Everyone I know, goes away in the end”…breaks me too!…basically everyone dies!
It’s a powerful message , this song and his voice and cadence will draw the pain out ! Beautifully done!
I love how she just let her tears fall so freely. I do the same every time I hear this song.
My mother was a drug addict and died from related issues due to over dose and such things. I played this song on my guitar (black) as is the Johnny Cash way, and sang it at her memorial. My father never understood this song until my mothers wake. This work of art hits differently for me. It always gives me goose bumps.
My condolence turn to Jesus he will save you and help you. Also they said Johnny Cash became a Christian God bless beautiful haunting song
Much love to you
The Man in Black.
Never gave up.
Trent Reznor big up.
He was the the most inspirational man I’ve looked at.
Raw reaction. The emotional reaction shows beauty in your hearts. Love it.
I just looked up "hurt johnny cash reaction" and this video was the first one to come up. I love the energy throughout the video. Definitely subscribing to see more!
Such A beautiful review
Your reaction was really beautiful in that it was real. You both felt the song together and were both equally moved by the intensely personal way Johnny Cash sang it. Great reaction.
I'm a Heavy-Metal Fan for nearly 35 years and i know this song for a also very long time!
I want to mention that it was originally played by Nine inch nails (NIN) and when i first heared it, i was crying like a little boy. So you two did, too. Incredible song!
Johnny Cash is a legend and i'm sure that you could hear him in 100 years to the future... if humanity is still alive
Y’all get it.
I’ve heard this song hundreds of times, but watching your emotional reaction took me back to the first time I saw the video, and I wept with you. Salute. 🤟🏻
Thank you for letting it play and watching your reaction as the song progressed. By far and away the best reaction I’ve seen for this amazingly beautiful heart wrenching experience that Johnny Cash shared with us.
Absolutely beautiful respectful reaction !! thank you both for your amazing video and comments.
Bob sent me here today, for her reaction. So genuine. Only life can place that in your heart. A true experience brings something that real out of you, and this song will do that every fucking time. Rest Easy, Man In Black.
As she started crying...I started crying. This song is so very emotional for me, but seeing it impact someone else like this makes it so much more poignant. Thank you.
You two have beautiful souls to really "hear" this song. Feel the pain.
Well said m8
The Line - "everyone I know goes away in the end" gets to me every time
Its profound although its the clearest thing in life. We will die. I think its the raw honesty in that line that gets us.
No “we will live on in memory“ or “we will be united with our loved ones some day“ sugar coating or religious mumbojumbo. Just plain truth.
As I realize I've lived many more years than I have left this song becomes much more relatable and personal to me. RIP Mr. Cash .
I love your open and honest reactions. I cannot hear this song without crying. I will be 60 next year and so much of this song about regrets resonates with me. Thanks for sharing.
I appreciate your authentic reaction. Thank you.
I love how they start swaying to the beat of the song, then the realization of how much this person has lost in his life and they freeze as the tear well up and escape.
I don't know how many times I have heard this rendition of this song. Every time I hear it I respond to it as you have. Welcome to my world.
Beautiful, 100% respectful reaction…June died soon after, John died soon after that..
You two are very sweet
Life can be so painful but so beautiful, what an amazing rendition of this song .
What a song, gives you shivers every time. You two are great!
I love your break down, God bless you!
I've watched several reaction videos for this song by so many types of people and the reaction has been profound. It speaks volumes that Cash's vocal and Reznor's words can cut through so many cultural differences to so many souls.
This is REAL. Johnny Cash was the MAN.
Maybe the most profound song ever written, and the performance is heart rendingly beautiful.
I have heard that song a million times and seeing yall I couldn't make it halfway before breaking down. Yall are amazing and that's why music is the bringer together for everyone.
I am watching these individuals. They are not playing. The song is not just beautiful. Their reaction is also beautiful.
Good music touches everyone.
Johnny Cash makes a true human being....
LAUGH at absurdity....
CRY for tragedy....
REJOICE for triumph....
FIGHT against injustice....
MOCK hypocrisy....
Welcome, fellow human. In my book, you're family.
I love Johnny Cash so much. He’s been with me and has helped me throughout some of my worst moments in life. ☹️
So pure and genuine reaction. No big facial expressions, but just tears... lovely.
RIP JOHNNY!
All these years and I still feel the pain he was goin through when he covered this song.
