  • @viperbreeze

    After watching I will say that the problems you have with that scene are pretty specific to the anime. Toei animated features of Nami which were not present in Oda's artwork, and they dwelled on the scene much longer than the manga panels do. I still wouldn't call it tasteful, but Oda's personal handling of this scene is much less blatant and offputting than the scene in the anime.

    • @BlinkofaStorm
      @BlinkofaStorm 7 дней назад +14

      Oda wanted to present an awful villain who abuses a very strong devil fruit, as well as play homage to one of the most famous horror shots in cinema. He certainly made someone so unlikable that everyone cheered about his death and his only cameo before that was the fact he was invisible and was taking Pictures of Shirahoshi during the Reverie.

      I mean, not lingering on it doesn't mean it wasn't a thing.

      @@Shiftarus Lingering on it does make it worse. It isn’t wrong to portray something like this in a fictional story. The discussion is about how it is being portrayed. The lingering I was referring to is lingering on the overstated images of Nami, which doesn’t happen in the manga panels, since the images weren’t overstated there to begin with. Oda drew Nami completely covered by the towel.

Sometimes. Look at the "Usopp gaslighting scene". Is it really Usopp "talking down to a woman"? Or just regular Usopp gaslighting ANYONE that would claim the invisible man's existence, or rather himself ? He would as a scaredy cat that refuses and denies reality, like he's done before.

    This is one of the most egregious scenes in the series. It's really weird that the invisible man's behaviour is clearly presented in the text as repulsive. We're meant to hate him, and feel for Nami. However, the anime direction chose to linger over her body and make it super sexual which invites the audience to be implicit in her assault. Morals aside, it's just not smart storytelling in the anime. These moments come across so differently in the manga because it's just a panel and your eyes move on quickly. In an arc where nothing happened, Luffy pushing the zombie back down into the grave still stands as the funniest moment in the series to me. The combo of how absurd it is to push a zombie back into the ground and the complete deadpan serious face Luffy has the whole time hit my sense of humor so perfectly.
    Also it is amazing what 18 years of perspective does to how you look at certain scenes. Sexual assault scenes were regularly played for comedy to the point where the moment with Nami seemed almost normalized. In an otherwise amazing story, the overt sexualization of women in this series never gets any better and stands as really one of the few black marks in it.

      You're misunderstanding what he's saying. There's a difference between being displeased with a character's actions and the depiction of it. The topic is something that can be brought up, sure, but the scene isn't taken a seriously as it should've, so it can be seem disrespectufl and tonally offputting.

    • @viperbreeze
      @viperbreeze 15 дней назад

      @crow-the-cryptid I’m not misunderstanding. I blatantly commented before watching the episode and the reaction, knowing which moment it is in the episode. I didn’t criticize Nerdy’s viewpoint because I hadn’t taken the time to hear and to digest it. This is a RUclips comment section. I’m just throwing a thought into the aether, not trying to solve the problems of the depiction of sexually charged violence in media.

    Scooby Doo is exact. Nami definitely put on Daphne's clothes, Sanji is Fred, Ussop and Chopper is Shaggy and Scooby. Maybe even to in Robin as Velma, And the bathroom scene is classical gratuitous sex scene in horror films especially around and "invisible man or hollow man" but I wonder if you can figure out the mystery. • @AvelinEver
    @AvelinEver 7 дней назад +3

    That shower scene is downright weird as the spying on his own daughter in the bath of cobra in alabasta. Don't get me wrong that doesn't mean I don't absolutely adore One Piece as a whole. There are just some scenes like the Nami Shower scene, that just don't sit right with me. You have to do such sensitive themes right and don't play them down.
    That aside I really love Thriller Bark, the whole horror theme and how different the characters react to it. Truth be told nothing happened here, that aside it's a funny arc 👻💀🧟

    No shit it's gross, it's a reprehensible villain. And why would they stop "showing" her body after for the handful of seconds that follow when that's the situation that she's in? Where would she get clothes from so quickly? Your reaction to the first bit is spot on, your reaction to the few seconds afterward just make you a prude. Nudity has always existed in movies, and the immediate aftermath of a r*pe scene (like, when she's being rescued from it) is one of the few instances where it makes sense, unless you want to confine yourself to only watching fairytales. However, scolding Usopp for 06:34 is completely fair again. I think 11:48 is also fair.
    I don't believe that there was any question about that this scene was meant to be taken as reprehensible and revolting, in spite of the jokes that Usopp is making there to cope or whatever the fuck he's doing.

  • @assaub

    I don't disagree with you in regards to the excessive fan service stuff but I do find it funny how you never notice how the men are sexualized in the show but always immediately notice when the subject is a woman, maybe its just because there isn't as much intentional attention drawn to it. There must have been at least a dozen shots of Franky's crotch in W7, Luffy's outfit is pretty much always an open vest with his chest and abdomen exposed, Zoro is shirtless numerous times throughout the show, his chest and abdomen are exposed the entirety of Enies Lobby.
    The female character fan service is definitely more common and there is more attention drawn to it but it is interesting how few people seem to notice the male character fan service, yet are always so quick to call it out when its a woman.
    also not that it excuses it but your timeline is off by a few years, these episodes came out in 2008 not 2012

    Westerners' reaction to nudity or pervercy in anime is always so predictable. Absolutely anything goes regardless of how horrible or violent the anime is, but one single frame of cleavage or some or an erotic moment and the westerners are instantly losing their minds.
    I knew your exact reaction to this moment back when you've just started one piece and began complaining about Sanji.

      Americans and Canadians are more prude than Europeans. Yet, that moment is gross, the sexual abuse from an invisible character is just gross. The prudish comment comes with Nami showing her body, when she was in the bath and was abused, ofc she wouldn't be clothed.

    I totally agree with you in this. OP can touch ab*se if it's needed, like it does with some other big and difficult issues, but not in this way. It's not funny, it's damn serious. It's not sexy comedy, and sexy comedy can be really fun, but not situations without consent like this. The later joke with Usopp made it worse and it doesn't fit Usopp's caracther at all. Then Nami and the debt... it softned the situation so much and it's a lost opportunity to treat this problem correctly and even educate the audience.
    But this is THE problem with this arc. I still love this arc, it has big big big moments, not only top epic buy very funny (like that zombie and luffy scene) and really sad too. It's a great arc but with some fails and at least three big crap moments and this is one of the worst.
    Unfortunately, it's not the last arc that this issues with shonen and anime will appear.

    The Invisible Guy is literally the worst part of this Arc and One Piece as a whole. Like everyone hates the shit out of Spandam, I think he's still maybe the most hateable piece of garbage in One Piece and I don't ever want to say I respect him in any measure of the word, but at the very least you can see why he's an effective villain for the show, hating him is cathartic and fun. The invisible guy on the other hand is just a creep, nothing about his inclusion adds anything of merit to the show.

    While I agree the bath assault was unnecessary, I understand that Oda is making a direct reference to "Psycho," one of the most important horror films in history.
    Could it have been handled better, absolutely, but understanding the jntentions of Oda lessens the ick factor slightly for me.
    Also, Hogback has the visual aesthetics of Frank N Furter from "Rocky Horror" but is more directly inspired by Dr. Moreau from the novel, "The Island of Dr. Moreau" by H.G. Wells.
