- Опубликовано: 6 окт 2024
- 8x8 tracked amphibious all terrain vehicle full rebuild mini-series. In this video the frame gets pulled from the hull, straightened and welded. Old beat up floor pan gets cut off, old welds removed and a new floor fabricated. The frame has gone through several drive chain breaks in the past which has partially totaled one of the cross braces. Damaged section of the cross brace is cut off and replaced. This machine has seen better days. But it'll try my best to get it to its former glory.

Built here in North America so yes what we call standard threads. When I was in junior high ( the late sixties and early 70’s) we were being thought the metric system because the United States at least was going to the metric system we were told. So we needed to learn it. And in the 80’s a lot of General Motors cars were metric, ( at least the body fasteners) but then they went back. And now it’s a toss up to what you get. I personally like the metric system and in my opinion we should have went to it. I hate fractions. I was a heavy truck/ bus mechanic my whole career 45+ years . Nice work keep the videos coming
We live with the frustration of the imperial vs metric fastener problem on a daily basis in Canada. Despite being officially metric since the mid 70s, our proximity to the U.S.A. means it's always an issue. Metric fasteners are limited and difficult to find in retail stores, and things like drill bits don't exist. Don't even get me started on how hard it is to find a metric only tape measure. Cool episode, thanks for sharing!
As a Canadian, well said. I’m envious of Donn’s typical projects where everything is in metric. Imagine!
Same in the states. We were supposed to go metric in the early 70's too. Now we have a mix. I personally find imperial easier to visualize than metric. I guess its the fractions.
Imperial has nothing to do with the US. In fact the US measurement system is based on the metric system... and converted. What else ya got?
@@ShainAndrews the us system is based on the old British system. Metric is far newer than imperial. Various regions of the world had their own measurements long before metric was developed. Metric was developed as a scientific way to standardize measurements.
Love your videos. No music, speeded up when necessary, show every step…
Thank you for making those!
That's some quality content. Can't wait for the next episode.
Oh yes!
You had a little hidden trick in there that you fast forwarded thru!!!! That welding the replacement section you used a filler rod/piece. Solid work Donn!!!
A welders tip for welding cracks in frames is to either add a piece of backing steel to reinforce the cracked area, or place a piece of copper, brass or aluminum behind the crack to draw the heat away, and help to resist distortion. Welding steel over non-ferrous metal won't allow it to stick to it, and allows better penetration.
Just weld it. Kids on the internet over think everything because they have done nothing.
@@ShainAndrews I'm glad I'm not a kid. I graduated highschool, trade school for welding and I graduated college and I paid my school bills, back in the 80's.
@@ShainAndrews heat distortion in a frame is a genuine problem. You can see metal moving as it heats and cools. This was solid advice.
@@curm1778 LOL... K kid.
@@ShainAndrews The way they cut the crossmember down into the channel frame created a notch effect. Any heating and distortion will be minimal and irrelevant in my opinion. A Red Seal Journeyman welder here with over 30 years experience in fabrication including crack repairs on heavy equipment. Reinforcing or capping that notched area could prevent it cracking again. He did somg good work there. I have thought about doing the same thing to my 06 Avenger. It is showing minor cracks from repeated twisting of the main frame. I like to cross ditches and obsticles at an angle to keep from getting hung up.
Still one of the few "Master of All Trades" and really mastering them all. Your videos are highly appreciated because of very good content
Really like that you wear hearing protection all the time. Grew up Fixing And Repairing Machinery (FARM) and hated the loud noises associated with such jobs. Fifteenth hours per day of hard dirty physical labor in the most extreme conditions is the best motivation for a college degree.
Wow! Not a single part of this series I don't like. Much respect!
I sure wish I could figure how to sit and watch myself work like you did. Having cake at the same time would be a bonus.
Unfortunately I don’t think I would listen to myself very well and I’d get mad and leave myself sitting there.
This is exactly what happens to me everyday. 🤣
As always work of art! Always remember there is nothing greater than an idea that's time has come!
MM77 Approved 👍🏼👍🏼…………………………………………………….FYI, you are one of the best RUclipsrs I watch. You have captions for the important information, fast forward through redundant tasks, and show in detail important things. Most of the content I watch, l skip through a lot of it because it’s redundant. I really enjoy your videos because I can watch every minute of them and I’m really disappointed when they come to the end! I hope all is well with you and your family. 👍🏼
Good to see you again. Was that Little Man's B-DAY CAKE? Looks like you have everything going your way on the rebuild. You've come a long ways and you're doing a fantastic job around there. Sure do enjoy watching your channel, stay safe and keep up the great jobs that you share on here with everyone. Fred.
Hello
But you did a lot of work there, thank you for letting us be there and please keep us posted👍
I could watch content from your channel every day and always be impressed! Keep up the good work!
WOW, I really like the way you refurbish things. I do pretty much the same thing when tackling a project like that. Everything has to come apart and all parts are repaired to new or better. I await the next part... Thumbs Up!
Good job 👍👍👍Thank you for sharing. Be safe 🇨🇦
Always wanted one of those things. Everyone needs a project and it appears you have picked a good one...
Thanks Donny 🍰
Listening to your whistling it is easy to understand why you work alone! Keep up the good work!
I find it hard to express my thoughts in words so others could understand what I mean. Thus I'm pretty much useless in a group work (those horrific events we had back in high school).😀
Hi Donn,
So happy to see you're back again,
you got me worried there.
*Well done.* When you were aligning the plasma cutter tip, I was thinking it would be nice if there was an attachment that could scribe or mark a line either parallel to, or directly where the cut would fall. Something that could be moved in position to mark the cut path-and then back again just prior to the cut. Again, well done. God bless.
Can wait for next episode one of my favorite RUclips channels
Looking good Donn! I can't believe how cheesy the overall construction of that Argo is, I thought they were built better.
And now it can all begin with solid foundations, nice work
Wow, what a job!
If the plastic tub is HDPE, it is weld able. A hot air gun with a small nozzle will do, just, cut some welding rods from the same plastic. Your plastic IBC containers might be the right material. I have welded repairs to kayaks using rods cut from traffic cones or gas mains pipe. If you have never done plastics, it’s different, but very satisfying.
If you could get a hold of 2 large bidirectional hydraulic motors, and one large hydraulic pump, you could use those to run the tracks instead of all those chains and gears, and you wouldn't need to use brakes to turn, engine revs would be lower, torque would be higher and fuel efficiency would be double. It would also allow you to control the speed more precisely allowing for crawling through slippery terrain. All you would need is two directional control valves, a pressure relief valve, and a reservoir for the hydraulic fluid. The engine stays at about 1500 rpms and provides power to the hydraulic pump, which powers the two hydraulic motors, one for each side, this allows for better steering, and a much more capable vehicle. Worth the effort if your rebuilding it anyway, most of those parts can be found used for a reasonable price and the rest is just easy plumbing. You could even add a propeller on the back with its own hydraulic motor which would allow travel across large bodies of water. Hydraulic force multiplication means you can get a lot more torque out of it than the small engine would have if directly connected to the wheels. Best of luck and thanks fornthe great videos!
Ура. Ждём следующую серию👍
Lots of valuable information for improving the design!
Really enjoyed your attention to detail. Great job!
Good thing you've finally got a robo-Donn! -They are incredibly handy!:))
Хороший проект, с удовольствием смотрю как ты восстанавливаешь эту самоходку. Спасибо за видео. Удачи тебе и всего самого хорошего. Россия, Москва,
First “mini me” now “double me” good one Donn. Do you know…….we can run out of superlatives watching your channel Donn, just keep doing what you do mate.
All the best to you and yours.
Рад видеть тебя. Ты снова в деле.🎉
i believe you missed a "like a glove" comment at 16:00. ;-p great work
Thanks for another amazing video.
Раму бы усилить против скручивания винтом, поперечными лонжеронами. А так очень хорошая работа! Спасибо!
The advantage of a restoration, what we can see how the vehicle was built, it is very interesting 🤩👍
Just love what you do! You do an amazing work!!!! Fun to watch!!!
This guy is great, meticulous, can't wait for more.😊
This is going to be a wonderful toy to have !!! Very excellent work fixing everything so far !! 👍👍
I agree, I've wanted one since I first saw one. Making dreams come true one day at a time. 😀
Hi, excellent work, well done. Many thanks from UK.
I love this build, keep up the good work.
Going to better than when it was made in the factory
Bring on the next installment of this build!
Always great content.
Cheers from Sydney Australia 🇭🇲👍🦘🇭🇲
Great work as usual... this is my winter project this year after moose season. I have a 2008 conquest 8x8.
Great work. Your sure doing a great job. And that cake looked good
Great to see you both again :) :) have fun Donn... thanks
HELLO DONN DIY!🫡💪🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺
I like your content / projects,
keep up the good work!
greetings from germany!
Good job Donny
looking good .. looks like it will be a great machine when you get done with all the repairs and up grades ,, I need to get started on my 6 wheeler .. no tracks .. Keep the videos coming they are Thumbs up ..👍
Great project mate I’ll watch with interest
Cheers from Aus
Great as always
It's going to weigh half as much after removing all that dirt!
Looks good can't wait to see it finished.
Hard work always has great outcome. Thanks for letting me see your project.
Awesome work and great video.
Nice work
I love Europe too, and here in Australia now there's no car industry people can throw out their imperial spanners.👍
So good ii boss part 3 ok 👍👍✌️✌️
It's been years since i done those frames and can't remember the clearances. All those places with cracks are common, you should weld in backing plates. Unless you're going to use it gently, sourc the heavy duty upgrade kit for the power train, ie. double chains, stronger hubs etc. also extendthe frame out to support the body over the tracks
Thoughtful, persistent work as always.
If you're going to run track, there's no need to power all eight wheels. Just the front and rear wheels will suffice and provide sufficient friction between the four driving wheels and the tracks. This will simplify the drive system and lighten the vehicle.
Had an argo and it snapped drive chains all the time up on the moor usually! Drive to 2 wheels only with the tracks is just asking to be rescued
BUEN TRABAJO AMIGO Y LARGO
Love the cake scene :)
Nice work...
Nice job.
You always amaze me.😎👍
More, please!
Que bien trabajas,,👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Good job Donn beautiful project
I knew with as much work gets done there had to be two of them.😉
Hi Donn - Nice work. The frame (design) seems a little flimsy. Why not reinforce it while you're at it. You already know where the frame is going to fail again. A few doubler plates and gussets wouldn't hurt. Also, there seems to be a need for diagonals in the frame too. They will help to avoid flexing and distortion from rough use. - Take care man.
There's limited room for extra reinforcements - everything is tightly packed innetween plastic tub and floor board.
Impressive! Looking forward to the series!

Nice 👍
Someone needs to give you a dry ice or soda blaster for demonstration or a sponsorship 😂😂😂
Amazing work!!!
Great build 😂
Great work as always 😉😉
Great video. 🥰👍
I was hoping to see you beef things up a bit where there was damage, such as the frame cracks. Maybe scabbed on a piece of 6mm plate over the area after welding grinding. Neat project, can't wait to see the next episode.
This machine had a super hard life, I firmly believe that with normal gentle usage it'll hold up great "as is". This thing unfortunately was beaten to half-death before it got to me. So let's get it back to its former glory.🤘
You can box and gusset the areas on the frame. That is what we do when we rebuild the older ones up here in Alaska.
hot tip: do not clean out threads with a tap, they will end up loose. use a correctly sized bolt with two slits cut along the length (to mimic a tap). perfect thread chaser.
More hotter tip. Stay in your own lane.
Equally hot tip, I think Donn knows more than you. And you're wrong. Quit using shitty hardware store 1A taps.
@Charles Brainard you're right, in this application it's not really an issue, and i have zero doubts about the skills of our skilled presenter. really more of a best practice thing.
There's nothing to do. You are the best. You should open a shop and make business form it
DIY Donn,= Mechanical master of misfit toys
Wesll Leaning Vehicle
(Scorpa trials quad prototype).
Love it keep it up as always 💘
Looks like it will be better than new when you finish it.
Unfortunately it appears the sacrifices for weight have created weak points in the frame but it also probably lived a very rough life.
This ARGO had a super hard life, I know that for a fact. I think the frame is fine, I mean, it could've been a bit more durable but it isn't badly made.
Should be fun to know you have it all fixed.
Will definitely be a better frame when you’re done.
The double Donn shot was Awesome!!😂
good job sandblasting and paind then its good
It's a good project, I'm happy to watch you restore this self-propelled gun. Thanks for the video. Good luck to you and all the best. Russia, Moscow,
I maybe would have pressure washed it before tearing it down. Maybe. Thanks St.Paul,Minnesota.
I’am 100% sure that this project was not yours because i know how you work. Respect and good luck in continued❤
Looks 👍 good
Thank you!
