  • Tri-ang R402 Post Office coaches in action.
Set intended for old super 4 track, but with modern ramps on code 100 track it is still possible to use these old coaches.

Thank you, yes I can see on your video list that you already have this model.
This layout is perhaps unusual, because the points used are some older System 6 types, so that some older wheels can pass through the check rails etc.
      Regards, Clifford.

An excellent kit there, working brilliantly too - far better than my modern hornby one!
    Hi to Slacker!
    Cheers,
    Sam

Thanks Sam, just like yourself, I seem to be "flying the flag" for these older Tri-ang products.
They still have "playability" after all these years. : )
      Regards, Cliff.

Nice demonstration of how the Royal Mail coaches work as regards to picking up and depositing the mail bags . I have two of the Royal Mail coaches similar to yours with differing types of couplings, one has the full coupling bar and the other a half coupling bar .They both work great around the track . Have a Hornby class 29 in BR Blue as my collection is based on the BR Blue era .Great video work you did from all angles to show them working

Thank you, yes these were meant to run on Super 4 track, but as we can see they can be persuaded to work with code 100 track.
      Regards, Cliff.

+Mark Filcher Thanks Mark, also the class 29 we were talking about earlier, by this time it had the Chinese mech.
      Regards, Cliff.

yes I noticed that, guess I'll have to Santa for a new 5 pole and bracket , although mine runs fine, smooth as silk, just has that tilt

These seven and a half inch Royal Mail coaches were made to run on series 2 track (the grey stuff). There was a Transcontinental mail coach, but I don't know what track was used. Thanks for posting.

heather1989 Thanks Hev, must admit I hadn't twigged the "hungry side" of the coaches, nice idea.
I'm always on the hunt for ideas. : )

I too have a Tri-ang Mail Coach. It still works fine after nearly 60 years of use. Thanks for the informative video. I did not know that Super 4 Track came with a mail ramp attachment. My layout has the Standard Track mail hook and mail box, though the rest of my layout is all Series 3 track. By the way, where did you get the tunnel portal from? I can't seem to find one in Canada.

Fantastic that you can still use the series 3 system... :D
The tunnel portals originate from a Hornby train set, the type where you cut out the rest of the tunnel from coloured card.
They are usually available at train fairs, if you don't want to spoil a complete set.
In this case, they are wide enough to accommodate my camcorder on a flat bed, to do on-board type shots. : )
      Regards, Clifford.

Great video Cliff , very interesting to watch especially the opening coaches. I recently picked up a few triang bits, including a station and a double ended diesel set with 2 blue coaches. Ive noticed the wheels bump along the track a lot and come off but there appears to be no way of replacing the wheels... might get them in before the end of May :-D

trainmania100 Thanks Matt, yes my R159s had the old wheels aswell, not to worry, they share many parts with Dock Shunters. If you do change the wheels make sure the insulated wheels are in contact with the pick ups. : )
      Regards, Cliff.

Hi, Sorry I meant the coaches, the wheels dont seem to run on the track very well :-) ive loosened them up though but jump around significantly :-). Unlike the modern hornby coaches, the triang coach wheels dont slide out of the bogie frames with ease :-)

trainmania100 The quality of these old coach wheels seems to vary, the second mail coach in this film has wheels taken from a third coach (not filmed).
The blue coaches you mention came in 2 series, I think the second series have better wheels.
      Cheers, Cliff.

Foxy313 Hi Foxy, I only seem to film if I've got something interesting to show you. I would like to film in the garden again, but you can guess conditions have to be "just right" for it to work. : )
