Angel is basically a psychopathic serial killer where Spike is a Hell’s Angel. Very different approaches to the same thing.

Trivia: Spike’s line about Buffy having “ties to the world” echos his line from waaaaay back in School Hard (2x03): “a slayer with family and friends; that certainly wasn’t in the brochure”.

When we see Angel in 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion in China, he had already been cursed. He feels guilty now, is sick of killing.

I have absolutely no idea if this is true, so everything I say here is with a grain of salt, but I heard that apparently season 4 was where they realised Spike and Buffy had excellent chemistry together, but because they were setting up Buffy with Riley, they tried to mostly give Spike screentime with other characters. But now in this season, we have this whole episode which is mostly just the two of them playing off each other to deliver an awesome story and I love it.

And I can't believe Drusilla left Spike for that horny devil.

The fifth season has several of my favorite episodes, and this is definitely one of them. I'm delighted by the matching choreography and cross-cutting during the 70s New York sequence. Favorite line: "It'll hurt like hell for about two hours...and she'll be dead just a little bit longer."

No see this happened during the boxer rebellion. Angel would have actually been Angel, and not Angels. I mean that he would have been cursed by then. So that explains why he wasn't interested in death, and in fact wasn't killing anybody. Also seemingly tortured in away, kind of like a teenager.

I didn't really know where to post this, so I may as well post it here...
You may or may not know this, but Juliet Landau (Drusilla) is the daughter of actors Martin Landau and Barbara Bain. The two of them starred in the original Mission: Impossible series in the 60s, as well as Space: 1999 in the 70s, both cult shows. Martin passed away in 2017, but Barbara is still alive at 92.
Also, since you mentioned his accent, it should be noted that James Masters (Spike) isn't actually British, he was born in California. Neither is Alexis Denisof (Wesley), he was born in Maryland. Or Juliet Landau, she was born in California as well. Anthony Stewart Head (Giles) is the only one of them who's actually from England. :)

If you look back to Becomming and compare dates, the Boxer Rebellion scenes are _after_ the curse that restored Angel's soul. He's still trying to "pass" among other vampires. Thus his dark expression on hearing Spike killed the slayer.
Most people miss this on first viewing. I did.
"William the Bloody" because of his "Bloody awful poetry." Maybe it's just me, but it didn't seem to be that bad. Not Shelley, perhaps, but not bad. He just happened to be faced with upper crust bullies.

Spike telling Buffy the truths she doesn't want to hear while still keeping his own past a "I'm a badass" mystery is such a Spike thing to do.
I feel like Spike overheard exactly how the 18th century bullies would rather die.
Angelus is the reason Spike is so fascinated with slayers. Surprise, surprise. 🙄
I was always a bit disappointed the slayer in New York didn't beg for her life. Perhaps after hundreds of years he got confused in his storytelling to Buffy (in the _School Hard_ episode) and/or just misspoke and assumed the Boxer Rebellion girl did when she spoke the Chinese he couldn't understand.
The cut is actually real to the actor. The writers wrote it in. Which makes me wonder of the history of the blade the slayer used as it should have healed.
The switch-up in the flashback Spike telling the story is fascinating.
Not many reaction viewers seem to remember the "creature" is the demon Spike is complaining to Joyce about in S3.

I've read that the reason the scar didn't disappear over time is that the sword that the slayer used was enchanted.

As it goes for the South America flashback with Dru... I'm not sure we can say Spike was already romantically into Buffy by that time. Remember than Dru is not only soulless and insane, but also have premonitions. Though it was often shown as a short-term future sight, it's also possible she had a long-term vision of how Spike feelings will evolve and then get persuaded that his obsession with the Slayer is about love while it wasn't but making the cogs of time turning that way.

Fool For Love is an exceptional episode this why S5 is by far the best season. The flashbacks are superb we can see where William/Spike is the way he is. He has been treated appallingly by women through the ages Cecily/Drusilla/Buffy. He was a gentle person as a human as opposed to Liam/Angel was an awful human. The scene in The Boxer Rebellion where Drusilla, Darla, Angel and Spike are walking away from the fire and Spike jumps in the air is one of the most iconic ever. This scene is exactly replicated in Angel episode called 'Darla' S2 E7 for those watching the watchlist of both shows in order. The fight on the train too with Spike in 70s where he steals the slayer's coat was brilliant. Buffy repeats Cecily's words 'you're beneath me' there is just so much foreshadowing in this episode it's amazing. A truly brilliant episode in S5 without doubt the best season, Fool For Love is definitely in top 10 episodes of whole series. Many are right to say this is their favourite episode so far, but there are two more in this Season that even better than this! S5 blows all the others away. Incredible writing!

It looks to me like it would have been impossible for his first Slayer to drive the stake into Spike's heart, considering she pinned him to the wall with her leg. She would have had to move it in order to be able to do that.
