- What's the best way to store leather? In today's video, Chuck shows how he stores his leather, liquids, patterns, and hardware items. Chuck also shows ways to store veg tan leather to reduce light fade and whether folding or rolling is best.

finding older chuck videos and they are amazing. chuck the thumbnail for this one...thats ALOT of buckles. but I did a double take because at first they looked like handcuffs!😂 I was like, oh my chuck! 😅
I have a magnetic strip on the wall for quick retrieval and storage of my most used tools.
ProTip: For the Alcohol-based and Oil-based dyes (Most commonly Fiebings & Fiebings Pro) You should NEVER store those on their sides, especially after opening them. They will seep through the threads on the bottles no matter how much you tighten them.
I have found that the best solution for these dyes is to use mason jars (With the metal lids that have gaskets in them, not the plastic lids). I label them and you can even make a simple dye swatch to clue to the lid if you wish. They're re-usable, and they seal much more reliably than the plastic bottles the dyes are sold in. You can also use them for storing any custom dye mixes you make, or anything you have thinned ahead of time, and label accordingly.

im glad i watched this because i got a whole hide from weaver that was folded a couple weeks ago and its still in te box, im gonna get it out today and roll it to store it
Some people have mentioned oiled leather can sometimes transfer and "contaminate"/stain other leather. The cardboard cubbies will prevent that.

Hey chuck , I just re organized my rivets box, most of the bags they come in break down over time, and open up in the box, so I have saved a lot of empty prescription bottles , I pulled off the labels and put 3 inch name tags on the side of bottle and with a small sharpie marked the top cap. Now put them in a small tool box and they're neat and organized and they won't spill out. Hope this helps.
great advice and ideas, as always. for hanging larger patterns i usually use a binder clip (i have tons of these as i use them for practically everything lol) to keep the parts together and just use the finger holds of the clip to hang them. taping multiple boxes together to store the more pliable leathers is a fantastic idea. i'm re-configuring my shop room presently and will be using this one for sure

Try using a boot tray on top of the shelf when storing dyes. May contain a spill or leak from dripping off the shelf onto other things.

Roll leather on cpvc tubing,, you can get it in all sizes, and cut it with a hack saw or tubing cutter.
May I ask about longer stored leather, like a English bridle or a veg tan. Do we need to feed them every once in a while so they don’t dry out ?

How do you get the punch stitching chisels to stay straight wile doing double layer belts?
Hey Chuck, I have a question: how can I artificially "age" my veg tan so that it's patina develops those gorgeous, characterful crinkles and wrinkles? for vintage style projects, I find perfectly smooth veg tan a bit boring! prior to staining/antiquing/top coating, I often want my leather to have some "broken in" crevases and wrinkles for the antique to get trapped in. Hey Chuck I have a question about the different kinds of leather what type of leather if any that I can use to store food or coffee in. Without using a plastic bag of some kind of outer container?

Would you recommend something like that toolbox to store other hand tools and punches for someone who only works at their kitchen table and has to tear everything down everyday?
absolutely. when i was working out of my living room i had everything in a mighty max box. and used fishing tackle boxes for small tools and hardware that stored in the bottom of the mighty max. tackle boxes are great as they have tons of small compartments

@@mikaylagam1818 just consider beforehand what you may want in there. there are literally hundreds of different boxes with hundreds of configurations
You can also go for art supply boxes or sewing boxes, maybe even cheap multi drawer toolbox.
Any horizontal surface is a crap magnet :-)
What about a video on how to clean leather cuffs?
Do you have any tips to prevent leather from looking worn due to cutting, hole punching, stitching, and just plan working on it?
Or any tips for removing small scratches from a finished product?
I get fingernail scratches, tool scratches, etc. on the leather. I know practice will reduce this, but do you do a final “buffing” step?
Hi Lisa,
You could add some leather conditioner or Smith's Leather Balm once you are done with the project and it will polish it up somewhat. But, unfortunately there isn't really anything you can do to remove fingernail marks or deeper scrapes and scratches. The best advice we can give is to just be careful as you're working and make sure your tools are polished and sharp, so they cut cleanly. Hope this helps!

What material do you use for your patterns? I’ve tried a couple of different things and haven’t found anything that works yet.

Once the patterns are tweaked and exactly how I need them, I use the plastic pattern sheet. We'll link it below for you! If it's a pattern I'm still experimenting with or tweaking, I use regular paper or the heavy paper that leather rolls get wrapped in to ship.

Every piece of chrome I’ve received from weaver has been folded.
For shipping, folding is fine but, if the leather will be stored for weeks or months at a time, then folding isn't recommended because the crease marks become more permanent. All the leather in our warehouse is laid flat or rolled prior to shipping. Hope that helps!
