    My school in Camden has an amazing view of the London skyline and I’ve seen it progress majorly since 2014 when I started going there. It’s really cool to see our city’s skyline turning into that of a proper modern city. Of course London is one of the most modern cities in the world culturally and economically speaking, but I’m excited for a grand skyline to be the cherry on top.

      The City of London aka the "Square Mile", is not surprisingly about a square mile in area on the Thames more or less corresponding to the original Roman city of Londinium. It extends from Ludgate Hill, Farringdon Street intersection in the west to Aldgate (roughly), in the East, the river in the south and Old Street (?) in the North. Tbh, I'm not sure about the precise northern border. The "City" is administered by the Corporation of London. It is in effect a city within a city. It has its OWN police force, the City Police, which is separate from the Metropolitan Police. It has its own ceremonial mayor, the Lord Mayor, whose official residence is the Mansion House. The city corporation is a power in its own right. There is no democracy. Private citizens have no say in anything. Even the British government has little power East of Farringdon Street. I don't know whether it is all run by Freemasons, but it wouldn't surprise me. The Corporation of London for secrecy and unaccountability, not to mention pure evil, make the Cosa Nostra look like the Girl Guides.
      Fun facts : the Corporation of London owns Burnham Beeches, a forest west of London near Slough. I've seen their rangers' Land Rovers with big Corporation of London logos on the doors. One of the victims of Jack the Ripper was found just within the City boundary. A contributing factor to the messed up investigation was a turf war or boundary dispute between the Met and the City Police.
      The skyscrapers planned within the City WILL be built, because the Corporation is answerable only to itself. No one else. After the funny handshakes have taken place, and the ceremonial brown envelopes have been exchanged, the project, no matter how pointless will be given the go ahead. For further information on how planning applications happen and gain approval, see the classic Monty Python architect sketch. Python's satirical comedy was, unfortunately, based on fact. That's how it's done.

    Delighted that Simon is a fan of tall buildings too! I'd recommend a look at the (very exciting) supertall timber Oakwood Tower proposal, with its innovative stiffness based exterior mega-truss structural strategy (used to resist lateral loads that prevent timber buildings being built above 40 or so storeys using existing practical techniques i.e. with connections considered), which could launch a sustainable revolution of tall timber sideprojects around the globe!

      @trevorjosephoneill345 4 года назад

      so you want more of the rainforest cut, interesting

    • @StephenShard
      @StephenShard 4 года назад

      @@trevorjosephoneill345 To make it clear I do not wish to see rainforest cut down, any destruction of biodiversity is a tragedy and must end entirely right now. The great issue facing the industry today is down to the current heavy and unsustainable reliance on non-renewable metals and minerals used to make steel and concrete products. Concrete accounts for at least 30% of global C02 release each year. Cement production alone accounts for 8% of global C02 and 10% of the Earth's water consumption. A relevant trend in relation to economic and environmental sustainability in densely urbanized areas is the demolition of buildings long before the end of their design lives. This suggests that renewable, perhaps cyclic, materials such as timber are particularly well suited to use in the modern built environment for a more sustainable future. It is entirely possible to manage forests sustainably. As a matter of fact natural softwoods grown for engineered timber products can be sourced from well-managed forests in places like Europe and North America. It is incumbent on the construction industry to understand the life cycle process of a material from farming, harvesting, manufacturing, fabrication, transport, construction, and ultimately reuse at the end of its usable life as a building material. It's an important discussion point because it is imperative to design habitats for growing renewable timber in order to work with land-management authorities to understand the capacity of land over time. Furthermore, the increased value of timber that is expected to result from its use as an engineered construction product is likely to confer increased value on long-term well-managed forestry.

    • @nickbrown6457

      A 500 metre tower would look ridiculous in London. It would dwarf all the other towers. Look at Dubai's skyline. The Burj Khalifa building dominates all the other buildings, rather than complimenting them, as it should. It's nice to have a mix of different heights, but not 500 meters in London. Dubai would look better if the BK building was half the size it is, in my opinion. I agree with FrenchFry90210 with a suggestion of 300 to 350 metres.

  • @todayonthebench

    The ETC could really make use of some sky bridges between those 7 buildings, ensuring that if one business needs to visit another within one of the other buildings, then they won't have to shuffle about the streets. Skyscrapers above 400 meters already do have some major hurdles handling the transport of people up and down their length. Having an access to the building that is already 200+ meters up is a rather massive help in easing off that issue. (Another solution is to eat up floor space with extra elevator shafts, but that isn't always practical.)

    Not sure how these buildings will be filled. 90% of City of London workers are working from home and will do so for some time to come. The City is a ghost town at the moment compared to what it used to be and many offices and skyscrapers are sitting empty!! Why would businesses be shelling out millions to buy/lease these commercial spaces when their employees can work from home.

    urban population density in Europe is higher than in most other places (especially higher than in North America), therefore there is less benefit to adding skyscrapers. The economic benefit of "supertall" skyscrapers so far seems to be non-existent.

    Yes, London has the potential to be the best in tbe world. They need to shut the City airport to allow construction of much more imposing skyscrapers. One thing London has New York can't and never will match is the much superior historic architecture of London, but London can match NY for skyscraper volume and height.

    I hope the Trellis is at least 300 metres. They can’t reduce to 10 metres and say it’s safe when clearly Shard on the other side of the river is 309 metres. It would be nice if they add like a 50 metres spire on the Trellis to make it look like the WTC Tower 1. That would look beautiful in the London skyline

    • @markfoster7949

      @ Yasin l. I think I know what you're talking about, the 1 undershaft at 300meters and add 100ft thin majestic on top of 1 undershaft just like the Empire state building. London should definitely do that, with the glass built around them on the rooftop.?

    • @Yasin_2312
      @Yasin_2312 3 года назад

      @@markfoster7949 I believe London should add a nice 30 metres spire just like they did on the Heron Tower. It would look majestic on the 1 Undershaft (Trellis Tower). That should make it the tallest skyscraper in UK and not cause trouble with Airports.

    The Eiffel Tower was built in 1887 and the highest occupied space is 300M above ground. The Montparnasse Tower built in 1973 is only 200M tall, but is a skyscraper despite the arbitrary 250M threshold you declare.
    And it remains to be seen what effect Brexit will have on building more office space in central London.

    I just want skyscrapers in London (All of Britain really) to look recognisable and different from their american/asian/european counterparts. While many of those newly suggested projects look really nice and certainly will add something of value to the London skyline I also see a lot of generic glass cubes. Funny shapes make the buildings more lively and human which has always been one of Londons (All of Britain really) greatest perks compared to other cities.

    The UK has a massive problem with a lack of affordable housing. The Conservatives promised to build 200000 "starter homes" back in 2017 and have built ZERO. The average house price in the UK is 16x that of the average annual wage, and 30x the annual minimum wage. In other words, if you're on the minimum wage, you'd have to go 30 years without spending anything at all just to be able to afford the average home. It's a disgrace.
