Personally, I believe Galway allowed their sense of injustice over Keady to spill over into uncontrollable anger with an overly belligerent approach from the moment they took to the field. As a couple of decisions went against them this only compounded further unbalancing their temper. The game was over before it begun. Had Galway taken it on the chin with a calmer and more stoic response, the result may well have been different. Tracy was a decent player and went on to become an All Star in subsequent years. That being said, Galway (especially their almost invincible full back line) were showing signs of age with Tipperary more experienced and streetwise than in 87 and 88. Though Galway still had it in them to shade it. My own personal memories of the day as a Tipperary youth watching on TV was huge apprehension in the build up to the game with more hope than expectation. The final whistle was more a sense of relief than anything else as Galway always seemed to have the measure of us in those years. On another note, I grew up on the Offaly / Tipperary border, just inside the Tipp side. Tipp Dad, Offaly Mum, so was more gutted about Offaly going out on the day than anything else.
are you serious? I was at the game and i couldn't understand what i was watching....free out, free out, free out. Anyone that hasn't seen this as a job done has seriously tinted goggles on. Galway were not without blame but this was job done, perhaps not only Denton but Croke Park aswell.
@@davidryan9721 Any team i saw hurl in the 80's were "filthy". Galway may not have been angels but they were done here and no doubt about it. Stopping a 3 in a row team was a priority clearly.
@@PsychoKillertheGame hard to be 20 like - never got over the clear and obvious effort by Denton. This is as clear as day. No disrespect, and fair play to Tipp but this was a hatchet job 100%.

Hey there anyone who reads this post, it is specified that referee John Denton was especially biased at 1.11.02 seconds in the description. I skipped to that point of the video and it was footage of the crowd if someone could clarify I would appreciate it? :) p.s. delighted Galway won Leinster yesterday and was honoured to be apart of the record breaking 60,032 attendance! ::) Roll on Galway All Ireland Champions 2017! ::)
Yes, but Delaney was suspended for the final. That said, Keady definitely got a raw deal. And I'm a Tipp supporter. When the same teams played in the semi final 2 years later, Keady was definitely past his sell by date.
Around 18. 30 Finnerty is booked for an incident. Arguable (an odd incident although it appears Leahy might have a hand on Finnerty's hurl and he was trying to wrench it free and caught Leahy in face) Even so it was hardly worse than Leahy a few minutes earlier and yet we saw a booking
Many years ago and yet recently a Tipp supporter told me he got no satisfaction from the victory that year. I couldn't say as I was out of Ireland at the time and missed the controversy. Looking at the recording, I think the ref might have got some decisions wrong but on the other hand Tipp could have won by much more. It's not the only match with controversy - and modern technology isn't infallible either. All that stands is the result - and that will be forgotten, as we will be
This was the championship semi final. They also met in the league final with Galway winning 2-16 to 4-08 in the earlier encounter. However Tipperary triumphed in this particular match.
He never got another game. A disgrace to the GAA but Tipp had to maintain their record of one All Ireland at least per decade. That's all that counted.
@@CostelloM And had Galway any other opponent for the final bar waterford yee would have lost. I admit i was even rooting for yee that day, absolutely amazing start 7 points i think on the hop. @@PsychoKillertheGame If your team are good enough they'll win irrespective of the opponent. I congratulate Tipp on all their wins but 89 was a fix and they know it. I haven't watched the whole lot but 13. 44 seems almost unbelievable
They got a soft all ireland that year, Beat 13 men by three points and a final against antrim.
And a shiney Liam McCarthy.
The cream came to the top that day.
And 13 man Waterford in the Munster final
Cork and Christy Ring won their 4 in a row by hammering Dublin in 3 of them and Antrim in another. You could say a very handy 4 All Irelands.
