This may not work long term BUT I think it's amazing what a family can make work when trying to live in a certain location. Some people due to work opportunities can't afford to live in a big space, so this is just another way families are making it work without letting the hard housing market get to them. This gives me hope for living in San Francisco with my family🤗

From someone who has raised small children in a smaller than usual (for the US, that is) space, I will say that hands down, the most challenging part was that children can be "stuff" magnets. Especially if they are attending any sort of school outside the home---papers and crafts and birthday party loot on top of gifts from friends & family, etc. They can easily accumulate not just more than they need, but more than they will even use, wear, or look at. We'd regularly sift through all of that & pass some along in order to keep it manageable.

It provides calm in a bustling small space. (3) Is there a way to child-proof the corners of the Floyd bed? (4) I love seeing examples of people making small spaces work for them. This couple did a great job at turning a tight space into a home.

Taking away the dish holder, seeing that it's empty, would free up a lot more space. There are foldable dish drainers where once your dishes are dry you put them away and you fold up the dish drainer and you put that away. It's only really needed to dry the dishes. Much more counter space that way. Also, getting rid of that lamp and opt'n for under cabinet lighting would *free up that space* and give you the same esthetic if not better.

Nice space, with some good ideas. Totally agree with building "up" - and things look nicer than everything at a low level. Personally, I would not use a glass, frameless, and therefore very breakable, mirror, with toddlers, for safety reasons for the kids. Nor would I use jute for the girls’ room, and no, as someone with jute rugs, they are not comfortable. Our cats won’t even walk on our jute rugs. Storing books with the spines hidden, and pages facing outwards makes it look like this valued form (color) instead of function (ability to see which book it is). That would be my only piece of advice - sometimes it’s ok for something to not "look" the way you would have chosen it to, if a less "pretty" way functions better for day to day living.

There is only one thing I kind of dislike - I know everyone's taste is different, I don't mean to criticise theirs, but I personally don't like the trend of making kid's rooms all white, beige and neutral. I get that adults might prefer a clean and simple colour palette, but I imagine that being surrounded by colourful things is more interesting for children.

    • @skengels

eh, my room as a child was painted white with a white bookshelf, white bed (I think pink, white or yellow bedding), white vintage vanity and stool, and beige carpet. My mom put up a variety of cute and detailed pictures though, which I LOVED and would stare at making up narratives about them. The room had some windows next to a street lamp and tree, so at night I would watch the shadows of the leaves moving through the (beige, of course) windowshade. When I think about the space in my childhood room, large color spreads didn't matter to me so much as having some pictures, fancy little boxes to put special things in, stuffed animals, books to look at and think about. My point being is that kids will make fun out of anything available and imagination is a hell of a drug. I think the lack of art in their apartment is disappointing but I can understand how it might "close up" the space. I really hate the modern trend of color blob art, so flat and boring and requires basically no thought or skill from an artist.

Aww your kids are precious! Personally I loved the apartment tour; small spaces are my thing & I guess that's good bc I'm currently renting a room in a friend's house & I've had to turn it into a studio which is working out fine but not quite as well as I'd like lol.
I love everything you've done to your small space; the style of furniure; soft on the eyes & senses, neutral palette, the towel rack in the bathroom & the kids room is so sweet, but oddly enough, I love the tiny kitchen! It's not that I don't like to cook it's just so cozy & inviting & that dining set! Everything you've done to make your small space a practical & beautiful place so insiprational. Thx so much for the tour!

This place is indeed amazing. It looks so clean and uncluttered, and this lovely family knows that kids do not need piles of plastic toys. The one thing I find very odd is no curtains or blinds in the bedroom! I am aware that Americans do not necessarily have curtains and you have bathrooms with clear glass in the windows (I am British and buttoned up!) What about light at night or more important privacy in the bedroom? If you know what I mean. Best wishes

Their home is beautiful! I think it serves for now, but as the children get older they will likely expand, but this is a great way to live within your means and close to work/school in the early years! One thing about a small space with a lot of people is that you have to clean every single day. You can't skip a day because even just a bit of clutter can make a small space look messy! Her husband said it right - it's not going to always be pretty. As long as you're happy with not sweating the small stuff, it can work!

The cars outside the window are driving backwards in the shot of the girl's bedroom. It definitely took me a moment to work that out in my head. The home is lovely, the neutral color pallet and design pieces make everything look so curated.

same tiny stove (worked perfectly, even a whole turkey) learned the exact same tricks via necessity, spices on magnet wall mount, hanging pot rack, use all the high ceiling space/storage, color pallete is very important, brought furniture-got rid of it & thrift shopped w/measurements, etc etc👍🏻ALL exceptional tips💓

Such a beautiful family. And I get very excited seeing a family make it work here in NYC. Like people are saying, I am very aware that other places in Europe and (from what I have seen) Toronto have small spaces; they are quite common. But often here I see people come to NYC for a year and then say well we’re going to have kids so we have to leave. Look at this apartment. The kids are so happy. Just really well done, beautiful design, such great uses of space. I love my tiny studio and this is super inspiring. 💛

What a beautiful home. I live in 840 square feet. I would rather go smaller and be able to decorate then go bigger and not afford to decorate. While the kids are little I think this arrangement works fine. And even when they're not so little they can learn about budgeting. This was a fun video to watch. 💜
