- Today we have a different type of project coming at you! We've been asked a ton of questions over the past two years about how we design and create some of the crazy one-off parts on some of our builds. So with the help of Peel 3D scanners and our friend Jeff Gardner (@the_jg3d) we're going to show you one of the most helpful tools in the design process to cut down on build time and headaches!
If you've watched our Tesla swapped C10 squarebody series, or the Twin Turbo LS Swap Delorean episodes, then you've seen us break out the 3D scanner. And while we've touched base on what the scanner does, how it functions, or what you do after your ride has been digitized, we never took a real in depth look at the entire scanning process. So we're setting the record straight today by using the new Peel 3 Scanner to create a 3d rendering of a few pieces of this 1965 Lincoln Continental. We're not stopping there either! Once we have those scans in the computer, Jeff is going through the steps he takes to take a 3D scan, turn it into a clean usable rendering, and make it something you can hold by 3d printing a piece of this classic ride!

And I thought I was cool in my moms 65 Lincoln, I installed a Mercury Park Lane centre grille , just enough cool and different to throw off the local car guys. When she got her 1970 Lincoln, she wouldn’t let me swap the hideaway headlight doors into the ‘65. I drove that for a year or so, very comfortable cruising car!

If you could strip that scanner down and put if on a drone use the the dots to setup a perimeter for the scan area it would make scanning stuff way more easier. Especially with the green light system used to keep the scanner at the optimal distance.
Then just sit back and let the drone do the work!
These are the types of things you need to have, just to stay competitive and up to date. There is nothing worse than watching a good customer leave and head over to your competitors. Just because you didn't have the equipment. Some people will think losing one customer isn't a big deal. No, it's a huge deal. They might not trash talk you. But they are certainly going to talk about it. Then, all of a sudden, losing that one customer turns into 5. Maybe 10.
In a custom shop you need some fancy equipment just to survive.

Definitely! I think though, it really boils down to quality of work. You don't have to have all the fanciest tools to create a beautiful end product, but it definitely helps with the time you spend designing and executing it!
i plan on scanning my car at somepoint for suspension geometry and tire clearance stuff, but the amount of work he had into that little logo is insane! If i watched it right in slow mo he pretty much remodeled the entire thing from scratch. I model/design automation for a living but i felt real lost looking at that
He used the scan as a base, then went back and redrew a whole ton of edges to make it clean enough to get a good print!
Love that Continental. Every villain should drive one of those..

Hellyeah Mikey! A 7.3 in that would be AWESOME! Just make sure ya drop a nice cam and lifters in it. The factory stuff is junk, delaminating at like 35/45 thousand miles. Great project my guy.😎💯

But yeah, 3D scanning has come a long way in the last years. If you know how to use the software and 3D modelling you can do pretty much everything in fabrication. Takes out the guesswork and provides precise reference points.
Just like Rob "Chairslayer" Parsons does on a regular bases: he scans the inside of the cabin of a car, develops a full rollcage on the PC, cuts the tubes on a CNC tube bender (with integrated laser cutter) and ships the whole rollcage to the customer as a weldable set of tubes. Which is pretty rad... 🤟
I remember seeing chairslayer on IG when he first started blowing up. The stuff he did to retrofit his car was absolutely insane! It brought a tear to my eye seeing someone so driven to keep doing what he loved. And when it comes to your points on the tech, you're 100% right! We just try to look at it as another tool though. But if it's going to make us more precise and more efficient in the long run, we're all for it!

when i first learned of 3D scanners i dreamed of one day having a 3D scanner / printer combo so i could design parts in CAD, 3D print a mold, then create parts in carbon fiber or replace heavy steel items like lower control arms, spindles, and hubs with cast aluminum. This video makes me realize that's a realistic business plan for a guy like me now. no more waiting. i could have guys send me stock parts, scan them, and then recreate the part in a better material like carbon or aluminum or make my own custom designs with strength or aesthetic improvements.

Seen people use foot spray instead of scan spray to cut costs
That stuff definitely works, but the stuff Jeff was using in nice because it dissipates completely so there's no mess left over!

Could you scan a part and load it in a 3D printer or on a plasma cutter?
You'd have to load it into a separate software to make the print/cut file, but definitely!

still an engineers ball game unless you teach yourself the software plus being very time efficient. The shop still runs and the customers still want their build yesterday with time this will be the norm bad ass informational on 3d scanning
It helps the turn around time a ton! There's a whole lot less guessing when you add in a machine like this!
Will this car be for sale once its finished?
I want tonthrow this body on a Tesla Model S plaid chassis/drivetrain.
You'd be able to keep all hardware, software and full battery pack. It's idiot proof. Just throw this sick body on top of the fastest production car on the market.
That would be so sick! We were thinking about doing a Tesla swap before we settled on the Godzilla!
@@SalvagetoSavage Its my dream to make this happen. I've been searching for the ideal body for some time now. Throwing a tesla motor and come batteries into a classic car is cool, but you're missing out on the total package of what Tesla offers. the most ideal thing to do is keep everything except the body, so you can truly enjoy the Tesla experience in a Classic car. Its not an easy project by any means, but once I finalize my funds, Ill be searching for a garage capable for the project.

I respect the idea , but those little targets and spray seem like a nuisance.
The dots are annoying but it gets the job done a whole lot faster than trying to design these parts from scratch!
@@SalvagetoSavage there’s a FARO scanner with a attachment called Freestyle I’ve seen used in the field for scanning buildings, I believe it works the same , you just don’t need any stickers or spray , it scans everything and puts in a software similar to this one shown, I could be wrong though.

It's actually only $8500. Which is actually pretty cheap considering most 3D scanners used in the industry can run well over 20 or 30 thousand.

Its nowhere near as easy as this "Sky is the limit" guy states. The scans need to be registered and meshed then reverse engineered - this is a big task - dont under estimate it. Its all doable for sure but not as simple as this guy makes out.
All of that can be outsourced though to someone who specializes in 3D design. If you want to build completely custom parts, whether it's out of carbon, plastic, or billet, the scan takes a hole ton of the guessing and preliminary design work out of what needs to be done. The sky is the limit for metal shaping and fabrication as well, but you need the skills and the know-how to accomplish it. The end result of your work will always be the sum of the time you take to work on it, the skill set you have, and the wisdom to know when to seek outside help!
That scan is quite rubbish and disappointing using markers and spraying. Creality Otter or Raptor make better job, get more details, are weigh the half, without spray, without trackers and in outdoors.
Aesub is super dangerous, read the safety datasheet, you are showing doing things absolutely unhealthy. You need globes, and full protection included FP3 full mask or air feed system.
