- Rhinoplasty Frequently Asked Questions
This video answers questions such as:
- What is rhinoplasty?
- What are some common changes made to the nose?
- What makes a good candidate?
- How is the procedure performed?
- How long is the procedure?
- What should patients expect during the recovery process?
- How long is the recovery process?
The goal of rhinoplasty is a nose that looks natural and blends harmoniously with the other facial features. Alterations may be made to increase or decrease the nasal bridge, reduce the size or width of the nose, narrow the nostrils, change the angle between the nose and upper lip, or reshape the tip. The surgical techniques employed depend primarily on individualized goals that are established for each patient.
Rhinoplasty comprises a broad range of operations done to reshape the nose as well as improve function. Some common procedures include:
- Dorsal Hump Reduction
- Tip Refinement (for bulbous tips)
- Alar Cinching (for wide based noses)
- Lateral Osteotomy (move bones closer together to achieve a thinner upper nose)
The procedure takes approximately 2.5 hours and is done under general anesthesia. Candidates for the procedure include patients whose facial growth has finished. For reconstruction rhinoplasty, patients should typically be at least 16 years of age. For cosmetic rhinoplasty, patients should typically be at least 18 years of age. During the recovery period, splints and stitches are worn for about 1 week. After about 2 weeks after surgery, most swelling and bruising can be resolved, and after about 6 weeks, nearly all swelling can be resolved. The nose will continue to reshape and improve for the first 6 months to first year after surgery.
