Kevin is truly amazing. He won me over just by playing Cowboy Bebop. XD So glad they got to react to IU Red Shoes. Modern times is by far my favourite album of hers and it really deserved the reaction.
The ENTIRE Modern Times album is absolute musical gold. It is by far my favorite K-pop album of all time even though Infinite is my bias group. Jazz really fits IU's voice so well. Her voice is strong but it can't be presented properly within pop which can have variations with how the vocals are presented. Jazz vocals are meant to be big and strong and even though IU's voice is very light, she adjusts in a way that makes her voice not become overpowered by the strong instrumentation.
Just wanna share someone's comment from the original MV : Many people think the music video is based on the fairy tale "The Red Shoes" but it's actually based on the film "The Red Shoes" 1948 by Michael Powell. Information from the comment: The film is about a young dancer Vicky who meets impresario Lermontov. Vicky is scouted to dance in Lermontov’s ballet “The Red Shoes” (based on the fairy tale) working together with Julian who is a talented young composer. Julian and Vicky fall in love and the ballet was a great success. Lermontov however developed feelings too for Vicky and out of jealousy fires Julian. Julian and Vicky move to London to be together and Lermontov refuses for anyone to re-perform the ballet “The Red Shoes” including Vicky herself. But some time later, Lermontov visits Vicky to come back and dance for him again in the revival of “The Red Shoes”. Vicky accepts his offer eager to dance again and leaves Julian for the show. On the night of the show, Julian appears in her dressing room for the last time to bring her back to London. Lermontov too appears and tries to convince her to stay. Vicky is torn between her love for Julian and her need to dance and doesn’t know what to do. Seeing this, Julian leaves the dressing room for the train back to London. However on her way to the stage, Vicky suddenly gets an irresistible impulse to run from stage and onto the balcony where she jumps (or falls, we don’t know) off and is hit by a train. Julian sees this and runs over to her where she lays on the ground and ask her to remove the red shoes from her. You can see recreations of the movie scenes in the music video, like how Julian visit the dressing room, IU staggering across to the balcony and disappearing at the end, or zooming out at the very end to reveal the setting, Paris.
IU seems to be able to express many genres of emotions in a variety of ways, even though it has its own unique voices That's why we always surprise us with a different song. This is why IU can only succeed
well, some extras in this mv are actually musicians like Peppertones (electronic duet), Huh Nam Hoon (jazz musician) You Hee-yeol (pianist + tv personality) who collaborated in the album .... Yunyi was right, there's some legit clasically trained people
I think what really adds to my enjoyment of the reaction vids are the little mentions of other videos theyve previously reacted to. It really shows that they pay attention to the videos :) (unlike other nonkpop reactions)
"Ooh get it clarinetist!" lol! I love watching people fanboy/fangirl over instruments being played! Most reactors talk about only the voice and visuals so this is refreshing.
For those who don't know, here is the summary of Red Shoes. The girl lies to her guardian(mom or grandma) and buys fancy red shoes with the money her guardian gave for black funeral clothes. She goes dancing in red shoes, discarding sick guardian who dies while she's out. The girl gets cursed and the red shoes doesn't stop dancing and she can't get them off! She eventually had to cut off her feet and live on wooden artificial feet.
Oh God YES! I thought this is just another case where Kpop made up some random plot, but I recall a story of Red Shoes that I read when I was kid towards the ending of MV where IU dances like crazy. I don't know the origins of the story, but it originally has a dark theme all over the place, unlike the MV, lol
Because IU has so many songs, I'd like to request you do an IU _marathon_ to react to everything she's already done. (I know I'm asking a lot. But that way you can react to her soon to be released new material knowing where she started. Just a thought.) 😍
the vocalists are right :))) this is def IU's style that's why she's been doing more of it in later works as opposed to the more poppy stuff that put her on the popularity map. I request 5cm and my old story by IU :)
yep, hence modern times is my favorite IU album. Though I do appreciate her covers of kpop 80s songs like the recent kkot galpi album. can't believe it took this long to get a modern times song reaction
Hi, the composer's name is Lee MIn Soo, he also wrote IU's "good day" and many other songs for Brown Eyed girls or SunnyHill, he's an "in-house" composer for Loen Tree. :)
it's around 11PM in my country, Indonesia. everytime i want to sleep you always upload something and i was like "okay time to sleep!" and then "wait nevermind let's watch this first" after that i clicked some recommendation vids and when i wanted to sleep "WAIT IT'S 4AM ALREADY?!!!"
FUCK YEAH NOTIFICATION SQUAD!!! I DIDNT WATCH IT YET BUT I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT THIS SONG IS ONE OF MY FAV SONGS OF ALL TIME AND IM SO HAPPY YOU GUYS ARE REACTING TO IT AND I LOVE THIS CHANNEL SO MUCH BC ALL OF YOU ARE SO COOL AND THIS IS THE ONLY REACTION CHANNEL I GIVE A DAMN ABOUT
He's also the composer of "Good Day" and "You and I". He's also done songs for the Brown Eyed Girls (and for BEG members Gain and Narsha's solo work as well).
And the person dressed in red pants, white shirt, dark blazer who plays the keyboards is You Hee-yeol (유희열), also known as Toy. He's a well know musician/composer/producer. He hosts "You Hee-yeol's SKETCHBOOK" which always has live musicians accompanying the guest artists. The audience doesn't know which guests will be performing until he introduces them live. He often will accompany at the keyboards too. It's a fun show to watch. 😍
Dya Drene - lol, I know right?! She even wrote a song teasing him about the intense gaze he always gives her, and she sang it on Sketchbook to him. 😂😂😂😂😂 Those episodes of IU on Sketchbook are still wonderful to watch. She has a way of grabbing everyone's attention with her voice. Charisma plus! 😍💯
IU is currently my fav singer. I love almost all songs from her albums. The reaction was really enjoyable! I had to laugh coz "I agree" was translated into ㅇㅇ in korean xD Kevin seems to be a really freak haha and Gwen is so cute :D
Angger OP sameee because watch this like waiting coming back my favorite idol/singer MV nad getting addict Umu should write this as WARNING or side effect to stalking the channel
I know you got planned for them to react to 23 and U&I together. As a IU fan, I wish you would pair 23 and the recently released 'Palette' together. Here is the reason. IU first debuted as a ballad singer but due to recent music industry centered around 'idols' in Korea, she could not survive without being a 'cute pretty idol' so she changed her route to being an idol. (If you do not get what I mean, check out her debut video 'lost'(2008) and compare it with 'Boo' The former was ballad singer route the latter was idol route) That is how 'Good day'(2010)-'U&I'(2011)-'red shoes'(2013) came out. It all kind of features her as a girl in a fantasy, but she was never content with featuring herself to the audience who she weren't. (On various talk shows and concerts, she talked about her insecurities caused by disparity of how public looks at her(innocent happy girl) to her real self(mature and a bit melancholic)) After she gained enough fame and influence to not fail even if she went back to the solo singer route, starting out from the song 'Friday'(2013) she steps out of idol career and tries becoming just the solo singer just like she wanted. Right after the change of the route she starts to sing about her life, more accurately her 'real' life, not featuring a dreamy girl idol image like she did in this video or U&I. The first title song released after the change was 23(2015) and 2 yrs later she released palette(2017). The 23 and Palette is almost a series. I hope you would reconsider pairing up U&I and instead pair 23 & Palette together because as I said- that way the theme is more consistent. If 23 shows conflict of her life, Palette is like the resolution; how she dealt with the problem she talked about in the song twenty-three. U&I should be more paired with this video- 'Red shoes' because it was the song released in the phase when her career culminated as an idol when she was featuring image of what public likes, not who she really is.
OMG I JUST STARTED WATCHING UR VIDS AND WAS ON A MARATHON CANT BELIEVE I ONLY DISCOVERED YOU GUYS NOW!!!! More vids pls love yous!!! p.s love you guys reacting to solo artists cuz its mostly groups ppl react to
i heard the cowboy bebop theme in the opening and I was blessed, such a good piece. Also, I had been hesitant to listen to IU but I really like her style! Thanks for introducing me!
If they wanna have a go at analyzing some crazy harmonic progressions - I'd highly recommend "lovelyz, ah-choo" or "Oh My Girl, Windy Day"!! I wanna seem them try ;) Hahaha
PlasticNotes - yeah, those will open their eyes, uh I mean, ears. 😊 I love Oh My Girl, but I don't much like "Windy Day". The chorus sounds ordinary or trite to me. Love their other stuff, but not that song.
Fair enough but it's not that ordinary when you realize how much chromaticism and harmonic dissonance is happening in the background - it's crazy af. There are some tight musical ideas happening! haha
Oh My Girl doesn't get nearly enough credit for going out on a limb with some of their songs. Windy Day would be perfect for this channel. Even their debut "Cupid" (which never got enough love) was daring.
OK thank you so much for putting out such great content so regularly?? I know editing and filming takes a lot of time and effort, as well has having to deal with requests and whatnot. As a major kpop stan, just wanna say thanks and keep up the great work!! ❤️❤️
Please react to CROSS GENE's Black or White! It's actually a mixture of two songs that they pre-released for their Mirror album! loads of symbolism and a very dark MV!
I can't wait for them to listen to IU's 23! But, I was so happy to stumble upon this channel yesterday to find out that this was next! Awesome personalities all around. Thanks for the fun. :)
PLEASE react to CROSS GENE's Black or White (and if possible Play With Me as well!). Black or White is very interesting because it's actually a combination of "good and evil" aka two songs on the album by the names "White Mind" and "Black Mind". ^^
'Cowboy Bebop' song Kevin mentioned had much infulence on Korean song writers. Many of them say they are big fans of Kanno Yoko(the composer of 'Cowboy Bebop' scores). When 'Red shoes' was released, some critics also mentioned 'Cowboy bebop'. I think the end section of this song was kind of dedication, and actually japaness brass band, famous for animation songs like cowboy bebop, took the part in the recording of this song.
I just want to let you know that your channel is the only reaction channel that I'm subscribed to. I just appreciate that you don't only react to them based on how they look or some petty reasons as most of the reaction channels I've watched. You guys also put in your opinions regarding their music and the chords.
ahhh this was so cuteeee. I just read the list on Google docs BTW, yay so many exciting things. can't wait for ftisland to be added to the actual schedule though. I know they are on the video playlist already. But ahh I'm so excited that the video for mamacita comes out 2 days after my birthday! that song is so much fun!
please have them react to both versions of IU's twenty three!! the official version with the mv and the drama producer version. it'll be interesting to see the different reactions on the contrasting feeling and overall tune :))
i like how these people react to the music like they use their music jargon and then there's me who doesn't have a clue what they're saying but i'm enjoying it.
Omg I love them all you are such beautiful and funny people I've been binge watching these videos and I know I've commented on like 20 of them now but just ugggggh thank you for putting so much time into this they are so fun to watch.
Is it too much to ask for a classical vocalists' reaction to Sohyang? I really look forward to another video in the vocalists react series before you guys break for the summer.
He is a real pianist is one of the best composer of Korea is one of the CEOs of Antena entertainment be said the man who play a lot of instrument in the other song of IU
I feel so old since no one recognized the Red Shoes storyline. OTL I love this song but the video I really can't take. Red Shoes is really not a happy story and then all these guys are too old doubling the uncomfortableness for me. It makes me sad because they are all such great musicians. P.S. I love that I can watch these during my lunch break now.
The original hans christian anderson story is about a poor girl who was adopted by a rich woman who gave her a pair of red shoes. The girl became vain and wore them everywhere even to church. Some old guy came along and enchanted the shoes so that she would always dance when wearing them. The rest of the story is basically her dancing herself to death even though she tried many ways of getting the shoes off. Even cutting off her legs didn't help. The famous ballet is a young woman sees a pair of red shoes she can't afford that she wants to wear to dance with her boyfriend. The devil disguised as the shoemaker gives them to her. She goes off to dance with her boyfriend but the shoes won't let her. They just keep dancing as they have been enchanted by the devil. She tries everything to get them off but nothing works. She winds up going to some other dimension and dancing with demons and other weird things. Finally she winds up at a church and the priest takes the shoes off and she dies. I know the story from the movie which is based on the ballet of the same name. There's a love triangle between a young, unknown ballet dancer a composer and a patron where the girl has to choose between real love and dancing (paid for by the patron who she doesn't love) and she winds of committing suicide by jumping off a balcony in front of a train or accidentally dying when under the influence of her love and the shoes. Depends on how you see it. So yeah, info overload. Sorry. There's more details to each version many of which are included in this video.
redlady4: Especially Kevin. I'll like to think he will recognize it in his subsequent viewing(s). Added: I think Kevin recognized the film at 0:38 and 1:03 but didn't/couldn't comment on the theme references later in the video?
Thanks so much for the video! It's definitely an interesting spin learning from Classical Musicians perspective on this XD I definitely recommend either CN Blue or FT Island for band music! From what I recall, they're the few groups that actually play instruments when they perform and sing! For FT Island, Hello, Hello or Love, Love, Love And for CN Blue, I'm a Loner or Love
Could you please react to NU'EST? I know they are further down on your list and you have not yet even scheduled to react to them, but they are participating on Produce 101 right now, and it would be really nice if you could help draw some attention to them, since they are very talented. Thank you
"this is her style"
oh man, wait till you hear palette, you aint seen nothin yet.
😂😂
Yess
Kevin is truly amazing. He won me over just by playing Cowboy Bebop. XD

That's intense! I'll search for that movie ASAP
ananda ditha thank you for this
Thank you for this! I found the MV more beautiful after reading this.
mindblowned. Thanks
actually there was 1-2 other explanations about Red Shoes, and all of it quite plausible
makasihh
IU's Modern Times album was a really good album overall. Its worth listening to it.
IU seems to be able to express many genres of emotions in a variety of ways, even though it has its own unique voices

minimalista12 actually You Hee Yoel own an entertainment company named antenna
Yes! antenna ent. they have Sam Kim who wrote 'Ending scene' for IU new album 😍😍😍
minimalista12 Co wrote I think
I think what really adds to my enjoyment of the reaction vids are the little mentions of other videos theyve previously reacted to. It really shows that they pay attention to the videos :) (unlike other nonkpop reactions)
I agree! It also gives us context to know what they're already aware of.

"La La Land has IU vibes" When will your faves

La La Land have more earlier musical films tribute!
+huifen Guo you mean butchering
La La Land doesn't come close to even an IU song, let alone golden age Hollywood musicals
외국도 요즘 애들은 고전동화를 잘 모르나보다.. 빨간구두 하면 떠오르는게 오즈의 마법사 뿐이라니.. 이 노랜 카렌의 빨간구두를 모티브로 한건데 ..

She eventually had to cut off her feet and live on wooden artificial feet.
oh thanks for the summary! is the Red Shoes an old fairytale or something?
Oh God YES! I thought this is just another case where Kpop made up some random plot, but I recall a story of Red Shoes that I read when I was kid towards the ending of MV where IU dances like crazy. I don't know the origins of the story, but it originally has a dark theme all over the place, unlike the MV, lol
mintygloopy Yes. It's one of Andersen fairytale based on an old tale from Denmark.
Dawesome The guy who made the original Disney princess stories made this story as well? :O Whoa that's so cool!
mintygloopy Yes he wrote the original Little Mermaid! His version is much darker than Disney's though

Because IU has so many songs, I'd like to request you do an IU _marathon_ to react to everything she's already done. (I know I'm asking a lot. But that way you can react to her soon to be released new material knowing where she started. Just a thought.) 😍
Great idea 👍 IU marathon sounds good !!! They will love it
i agree.. IU! IU! IU!

I agree! IU really has grown to find her own style and she's such a beautiful woman.
PLEASE, I STAN THIS TOO
the vocalists are right :))) this is def IU's style that's why she's been doing more of it in later works as opposed to the more poppy stuff that put her on the popularity map. I request 5cm and my old story by IU :)

IU is such talented singer , Thanks for react to her , I will wait more of her (and other singer of course) in your channel 😘
To Yunyi and Kevin,
You wanna know the composer's name, right? It's Lee Minsoo (이민수)
SpressLoves WonderGirls and he is such a huge fan of IU it's so adorable.
SpressLoves WonderGirls I love Yoo Hee Yeol's sketchbook. It has introduced me to amazing artists.
Kevin's reactions really makes my day

Agreee!
YAS FINALLY THEIR FIRST TWO REACTION VIDEOS OF IU IS DONE IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THEM TO REACT TO IU SINCE EARLY FEB I CAN NOW SLEEP IN PEACE
U&I should be more paired with this video- 'Red shoes' because it was the song released in the phase when her career culminated as an idol when she was featuring image of what public likes, not who she really is.

PLEASE react to CROSS GENE's Black or White (and if possible Play With Me as well!). Black or White is very interesting because it's actually a combination of "good and evil" aka two songs on the album by the names "White Mind" and "Black Mind". ^^
After the discovery of this channel my life has probably become complete, nothing is more engaging than seeing y'all react
The whole music video is based off the 1948 film The Red Shoes, if you want to watch it. Explains the crazy alive shoes lol
Thank you for reacting to my favorite person in the world! Looking forward to more IU reactions in the future 💕
I appreciate anyone who can appreciate *_Tank_* from Cowboy Bebop.
Omo Omo CocoMomo
Kenny Yoko make bepop/jazzy style into Cowboy bepop soundtrack !
ahhh this was so cuteeee. I just read the list on Google docs BTW, yay so many exciting things. can't wait for ftisland to be added to the actual schedule though. I know they are on the video playlist already. But ahh I'm so excited that the video for mamacita comes out 2 days after my birthday! that song is so much fun!

i remember liking cleansing cream but always get scared when the little sister entered the room at night
아이들 Yes!!
soda yeah and also brave new world! i love these songs 💕
아이들 Cleansing cream has to happen!
YES!
As someone who's basically tone deaf it amazes me how they're just able to identify the key it's in right away every time it changes.
iu through the night.... pleaaaaseeee >.
i like how these people react to the music like they use their music jargon and then there's me who doesn't have a clue what they're saying but i'm enjoying it.
COWBOY BEBOP OMHYGOD KEVIN HAS ME DEAD EACH VIDEO
You guys absolutely need to hear IU's new release: palette and through the night, they're amazing
"Have we been in every single key?" 😂😂
you guys are officially my favorite react channel of all time.
8:08 "but LaLa Land has IU vibes" 😂

Omg I love them all you are such beautiful and funny people I've been binge watching these videos and I know I've commented on like 20 of them now but just ugggggh thank you for putting so much time into this they are so fun to watch.
Is it too much to ask for a classical vocalists' reaction to Sohyang? I really look forward to another video in the vocalists react series before you guys break for the summer.
Jasmine Kim Especially Arirang Alone!! The song is wonderful vocally, but it's so emotional as well.
Jasmine Kim yeeeessss i need more people to experience Arirang Alone!
They're gonna take a break?
4minute60: I think that is one of the major reasons Umu is ~2 months ahead in recording their reactions. We will not experience a break at all!
자막있어서 진짜 좋았어요 :) 감사해요!!
Cowboy Bebop 😂
Leixia Han anime??
Joy Troye yeah the anime. Kevin was playing the opening at the beginning
Wonder if he's a fan of Yoko Kanno?

He is a real pianist is one of the best composer of Korea is one of the CEOs of Antena entertainment be said the man who play a lot of instrument in the other song of IU
Gwen: "This is her style." Owww... you still newbie, sweetie! ;)
😂😂😂
yes IU slays woo ~! Can't wait till next time ^-^
please react to IU - You & I. It's one of her best songs and the MV is cute
7:10 same, its okay tho. I watched this mv and the Friday mv, and then watched him in Kill It and my heart was happy😊
I feel so old since no one recognized the Red Shoes storyline. OTL
I love this song but the video I really can't take. Red Shoes is really not a happy story and then all these guys are too old doubling the uncomfortableness for me. It makes me sad because they are all such great musicians.
P.S. I love that I can watch these during my lunch break now.
redlady4 what's the storyline of the video?
Sorry. There's more details to each version many of which are included in this video.
redlady4 wow, thank you so much for the info 👍 I'll look into the movie then 😤
redlady4: Especially Kevin. I'll like to think he will recognize it in his subsequent viewing(s).
Added: I think Kevin recognized the film at 0:38 and 1:03 but didn't/couldn't comment on the theme references later in the video?
I read a bedtime story book about this when I was kid. Where does this originate from? I am sure it's not one of the local tales from my country.
YESS IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VID
Cowboy Bebop opening was a nice touch at the beginning ♡
i have been waiting for this reaction for a longg time
Yepph.. They are all musicians.. Except for Jang Kiyong and Fhifan... ALL OF THEM ARE MUSICIANS AND PRODUCERS AND SONG WRITERS AND SINGERS. please.
Thanks so much for the video! It's definitely an interesting spin learning from Classical Musicians perspective on this XD
I definitely recommend either CN Blue or FT Island for band music! From what I recall, they're the few groups that actually play instruments when they perform and sing!
For FT Island, Hello, Hello or Love, Love, Love
And for CN Blue, I'm a Loner or Love
Could you please react to NU'EST? I know they are further down on your list and you have not yet even scheduled to react to them, but they are participating on Produce 101 right now, and it would be really nice if you could help draw some attention to them, since they are very talented. Thank you
I really like this reaction. They really enjoyed the song.
React to IU: Last Fantasy! This has a classical vibe to it
A lot of people think 20s is a catch-all decade for "old music" but this is much more late 30s-40s music/concept.
please react to IU's Leon and also Hyukoh's Wonderful Barn, those two songs have some really interesting features!
it's great that this channel had react schedules
Please react to her latest music as well....💕
And friday too
