The story of Jody (Tyrese Gibson), a misguided, 20-year-old African-American who is really just a baby boy finally forced-kicking and screaming to face the commitments of real life. Streetwise and jobless, he has not only fathered two children by two different women-Yvette (Taraji P. Henson) and Peanut (Tamara LaSeon Bass) but still lives with his own mother. He can't seem to strike a balance or find direction in his chaotic life.

Yeah I agree, it's always about the black struggle for love, that's why our community doesn't know how to have normal relationships. All the men in this movie use sex, aggression or both to o get their way with these women. And, all the men are living with the women.
That’s why we have to seek help to break these cycles. And some of them stem from generational curses. Why is it that Men wanna live off of a women. Yet take charge of the household. Nah to be in charge and to lead as a man, you gotta take care of yours. That means your woman and your children. PERIOD. Then the whole thing with sex and aggression. It just speaks to how they brush off problems. Sex can’t solve everything. The emotional intelligence is what they lack. And it’s sad to see women just sit there and take that shit. But that's what makes this movie so good because it's all about turning all your negatives into positives. Jody and Yvette had the same nightmares, so they obviously connected but Jody wasn't ready to grow up until he started seeing his nightmares come to life. He lost his girl, hung out with his homie pulling guns on under age kids, beefing with his mom's boyfriend interfering with her happiness, and almost lost his life by his baby mommas ex. Full circle indeed, sometimes you travel in the dark in order to find the light✝️🙌🏾☀️

I had behavioral problems when I was a kid and my mom was not for them trying to give me medicine so know that if you just need to talk through your problems. It’s there for you. Love your down to earth reaction because this movie is hella toxic, but it's a (mostly) realistic presentation of struggle love and the response from the black community is an indicator of how we tend to glorify struggle love. I know people who love this movie and others who hate it. I'm somewhere in the middle where I can respect and appreciate it while acknowledging that certain parts of it are just plain wild. (i.e. Melvin choking out Jody and then later kissing at Jody before laying him out with one punch). SN: Did you notice the scene when Melvin punched Jody and the mom flew back into the wall too, that always makes me laugh because how tf did that happen lol.

I strive to be Melvin as a step dad
Melvin at times was trifling bruh. Being a good stepdad is being patient with someone else kid and not going toe to toe with them. Even if Jody was a grown as man. Because in the beginning Jody wasn’t even on that rude as timing. And if you heard him talking about losing a brother. You should be more empathetic to his feelings. Melvin only cared when he saw Jody after he dropped a body. It shouldn’t have to come to all that.

I feel like because of how memeable and relatable it is with its collage of toxic tropes the deeper story it's telling goes over ppl's heads. Alot of ppl just see Jody as a bum but Jody is only 20 yrs old and stuck in a cycle of toxicity and trauma thats stunting his growth like many men from similar backgrounds. Raised by a single mom with an affinity for thug dudes, he's lost his older brother to the streets, lowkey struggles with self worth, he's already been to jail, Has two kids and he has a deep fear of dying but was never given the tools to communicate in a healthy way but everybody expects for him to have it figured out.His exchange with Melvin at the end was powerful because in that moment he saw that traumatized boy that Jody only shows in his dream sequences and chose to carry that burden for him and that showed Jody that Melvin was someone he could trust not only for himself but for his Mom and that gave him the push he needed to leave the nest and become the man his new family needed him to be.
Yeahhh I think what makes it kinda hard for people to pick up when the characters age don’t match how they look. Lmaoooo Tyrese was giving at least 26 27 here. But I did start to break it down even more after watching it. Being someone who has gon through a fair share of toxic traits growing up sometimes you just wanna break that cycle. I had young mother and everyone thought I would end up with children at a young age but I didn’t. But you’re right when your not given the proper tools to navigate. It definitely makes it harder. Speaks to the parents and also the person
