    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Frank Morris (Clint Eastwood), a hardened con with a history of prison breaks, is sent to serve the rest of his life sentence at Alcatraz -- America's most infamously brutal and inescapable maximum security prison. Morris quickly realizes the prison's dehumanizing effects and clashes with its cruel warden (Patrick McGoohan). Fed up with life at Alcatraz, Morris and two convict brothers (Fred Ward, Jack Thibeau) meticulously plan the unthinkable: an escape from the island.

So it was a good escape if you’re saying that then if I’m right. I think they escaped because they said they were going to go to another island and maybe someone took them with their boat to go to San Francisco and they came to San Francisco. I think that was the truth.

Just look at the frustration on the wardens face just before he tosses the flower into the water,he knows they made it but his ego won't allow him to admit the fact that the three were clever enough to put on over on him, like when Andy set the Warden up in ShawShank.

As of right now, there is zero evidence that they died while escaping. None of the three bodies washed ashore. Not one shoe, shirt or any other item that was being worn. Considering that the waters were fairly calm the night of the escape, it is highly feasible that they made it to the mainland.

When the Mythbusters re-staged the escape, Adam Savage made a good point. If you're trying to make an escape proof prison, maybe don't build it with an invisible crawlspace between the cells?

were in prison for a reason. But as long as they ultimately went straight after escaping (which they must have if they did) then I really hope they made it, it’s just such a cool story.

Even if Charly Butts did managed to rendezvous and then escape Alcatraz with Frank Morris and the Anglin Brothers, the police would have known where to find Butts since he would have gone straight back to his wife as a family reunion, so he'd have gotten recaptured back to Alcatraz for good.

      I saw the movie first.
Then later went to Alcatraz in 1986. That felt creepy too. You can definitely sense the feelings of isolation, enclosed behind walls and bars. Also the feeling knowing that you're probably going to die there. If not my natural causes, by getting murdered by another inmate. Definitely a place of loneliness and hopelessness.
It's no wonder some prisoners would crack because of the the repetitive routine day and day out.
It's no wonder the last prisoner that was escorted off the island made the famous statement during its closure; "Alcatraz, was no good for nobody."
I'm not sure if that counts for the guards and their family or the warden and his family. But still...

They did an investigation in the early 2000's to see if it was truly possible to survive. They concluded it was nearly impossible given the conditions. I personally think they did survive the escape but something might of happened to them when they tried to leave San Fran. IF I can go back in time and just observe one event in history that escape would be on my list.

I remember MythBusters did an episode on the Alcatraz Escape. If the three did attempt to go to Angel Island, they probably wouldn't have made it, as they would have been fighting against the tides. But, because Frank Morris had a high IQ and experience with escaping prisons, they believed he would have been watching the tides and deduced it would have been suicide to go to Angel Island. If the three had changed plans to go to the Marin Headlands instead, then they would have had a better chance of survival, going with the strong currents, rather than against them.

Evidence found in the 2010s actually suggests that Morris and the Anglins did indeed survive, as the remains of a raft were discovered on Angel Island, contrary to the initial FBI reports, and there were footprints leading away from the raft. There was also a report of a 1955 blue Chevrolet that had been stolen on the night of the escape by three men, who could've been Morris and the Anglins.

Interesting that there's a supposed picture of the Anglin brothers in South America. Definitely looks like them. At their mother's funeral people noted two 'elderly, stocky, women with heavy makeup that appeared and were gone before anyone really took notice. (The FBI was watching the family.) Of note, the Anglin brothers spent their summers swimming in Lake Michigan and were expert swimmers used to cold water. The Anglin family maintains the photos were indeed lost on purpose to make it look like they drowned. (It also gave the warden a convenient alibi.) Every part of the escape was masterfully thought through.

I always thought that he kind of looked like the last warden of Alcatraz who was Olin G. Blackwell.
Which upon reading about him was the least strict of all the wardens. Quite the opposite of the one portrayed in the movie who was like the warden that would take pleasure in your suffering.
      Pretty sadistic!
