He’s a musician’s musician . A brilliant multi - instrumentalist who plays bass , keyboards, mandolin and who knows what else. Thank you for making this and sharing it.
John Paul Jones was the CEMENT that held Zep together and for In thru the Out Door he was the conductor. Jimmy had 2 or 3 magnificent parts in that but it was JPJ that made that album with Percy's voice.
@@lastdaysguitar he’s an amazing bassist but your missing my point. He’s a true “artist” in Zep his medium just happened to be a bass guitar. If you stuck cord wood in his hands he’d find a way to make something cool from it.
I understand he's a versatile musician, but the very first words in your post is "JPJ is not a bassist" and that statement is definitively incorrect, pretty sure JPJ'd take some offense and answer you in so many words: I AM A BASSIST. @@gtate135
I know why the video cameras/photographers concentrated on Bonham/Plant/Page. Their pyrotechnics were out of the world. But the solid "Rock" which bound them together was that under exposed multi-instrumentalist called John Paul Jones.
He “played” with Bonham. There was a secondary concert entirely going on behind Robert and Jimmy. Jones’ prowess on Hammond Organ is another thing everyone should hear.
@@classicrockalbumreviews19 What I’ve concentrated on intently is the funk section, pre theramin, of the ‘73 tour. It was different most every night. Truly remarkable bass & drum patterns that were basically un-copyable. One of my faves is the WLL from Pittsburgh 24.7.73. Do check it out to hear John’s incredible picking skills. It’s just incredible!
@@classicrockalbumreviews19 excellent. This is the last show prior to the three epic nights at the Garden so.. and the film crew was on board this night along w 40,000 in attendance. This was an epic gig. Drag forward if you like to Heartbreaker and just let it roll from that point - all the way to the end of WLL. Jones’s’ bass playing pre theramin and all the way through is simply epic. I look forward to your comments about it! Enjoy, my friend.
John Paul is absolutely brilliant 👍🏻💯smh...his song no quarter always gives me the chills. And as a person hes cool, a family man i like that. Hes one of my favourite musicians. And, "In through the outdoor" is his album as far as im concerned..he was amazing on that record.
The intro to "Your Time Is Gonna Come" was my introduction to John's musical talent, way back, when I was school. It still remains one of my favourite intro's to a Zep track.
During any given Zepplin concert John Paul Jones is playing electric keyboards he’s playing Fender Rhodes electric piano on their last tour he had a big white baby grand piano on stage plus his bass guy is unbelievable
Interesting that his parents did a musical comedy routine. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, ‘cause John Paul has a great, witty humor.
listen mate. Iv been a zeppelin fan since 1970. John paul was the true backbone of my band. I didnt know it either. That guy was the backbone of zeppelin like Watts was for the Stones
My all time fave bassist of all time. Dude has never missed a note. I'm with the guy who mentioned earlier about The Lemon Song. In My Time of Dying is my next fave bass line with Jonesy. You said it right when you said prodigy. Absolute genius.
Yep. Fool in the Rain. When that song came out, I remember listening to it on the radio and thinking, 'This isn't Zep!'. But the more I listened, the more I realized what a great song it was, and so much of its greatness is down to JPJ's keyboards. And we're not even talking about his contribution to Them Crooked Vultures.
He’s always been my favourite Zeppelin musician. He’s not just the arranger. He essentially put Zeppelin together by choosing the human elements to the ensemble. Had Jimmy choose him, then he had Jimmy choose John and Robert.
If youve never listened to Them Crooked Vultures, then please do so. He was in that band with Dave Grohl and Josh Homme. Excellent CD. I was eagely anticipating the follow up but it never came. Doubt it will now. Jones is around 76-77 yrs old and Grohl is dealing with the untimely death of Taylor Hawkins in the Foo Fighters.
I'm not sure why people say JPJ is underrated? He's a master of all. Playing whatever needed to be played, killer riffs, excellent moving backing parts. They were four pieces that made a beast. That's why the beast couldn't live with only 3/4 of it's parts.
I've heard the isolated Bass and Drum stems from TSRTS and the playing from John Paul Jones and John Bonham is out of this world. As a rhythm section John Paul Jones and John Bonham could stand against anyone.
Page apparently did not want the recorders in Stairway to Heaven until he heard a preliminary recording of the song. The recorders were JPJ idea & perfect for the song's intro mood
i like this vid. its important to me. Im also a musician. I appreciate john paul like ginger baker on drums for a different band. Man thanks. as a Zep fan i appreciate your vid good luck mate
This is a fantastic video about JPJ. I wonder, would you do a video about the Zep song Carouselambra? I think it’s one of their most under rated compositions. JPJ lays down a great bass track and then adds incredibly powerful keyboards on top of this epic piece.
JPJ is the best musician in Zeppelin. My most cherished album is a JPJ signed Zeppelin 4. The only thing that could be better would be a signed Physical Graffetti,
That's amazing. It was Muddy Waters' album " Father's and Sons " that inspired me to become a Jazz-Rock Multi-instrumenilist. Phil Upchurch played Bass on that album. I went up to him at the 1989 Namn show in Chicago and told him what I've just told you all. Upchurch said to me; " Yeah, so what are you doing now?" God, what a cold heartless asshole this guy was! And I can smoke him on guitar and Bass. The only reason all these guys are famous and I'm not is because they were born 10 years before I was and that's it.
Heartbreaker is a Bass riff.. JPJ played it though a Leslie Cabinet on LZ2. Huge.. I saw him play it on one of his Manson basses ...double bill with King Crimson..Thundertheif Tour..just the opening Riff.. The message was loud and clear ... "I wrote this."..
There are a lot of Led Zeppelin songs where I think JPJ's bass is far too buried in the mix. His lines are brilliant--often far better than what page is playing.
Jimmy page gets all the credit for the refs but many of them or John Paul Jones including good Times bad Times trampled under foot how do you see all the heavy keyboard and piano songs he’s my hero👍
This is a post that is just stealing JPJs talent! Not a note from John-Paul, not a squeek from Led Zep - anyone could have cobbled this bullsh*t together!
The keyboard on No Quarter is a masterpiece! John P J is a monster musician.
He’s a musician’s musician . A brilliant multi - instrumentalist who plays bass , keyboards, mandolin and who knows what else. Thank you for making this and sharing it.
Jonesy was Zeppelin's Swiss Army knife.
Perfect analogy 🤔
John Paul Jones was the CEMENT that held Zep together and for In thru the Out Door he was the conductor. Jimmy had 2 or 3 magnificent parts in that but it was JPJ that made that album with Percy's voice.
Ramble On is my favourite bass line of all time - when that never ending riff gets into my head I'm humming it all day long
JPJ is not a bassist, he’s a musician who happened to primarily play bass in Zep.
BINGO! His keys on no quarter are other worldly
Yeah, well... - he's also a damned fine BASSIST.

Zeppelin's greatest riff, Black Dog, was written by Jones on a train using a shorthand notation technique that his dad had taught him.
I know why the video cameras/photographers concentrated on Bonham/Plant/Page. Their pyrotechnics were out of the world. But the solid "Rock" which bound them together was that under exposed multi-instrumentalist called John Paul Jones.
The music that Led Zeppelin recorded and released between 69 and 79 can never be duplicated. Their music will forever be timeless.
Definitely most underrated musician period imo. The man was a one man band and could play just about every instrument.
JPJ is definitely my fave member of Led Zep, for his own work and his many collaborations, he’s brilliant 🫶🏻
He “played” with Bonham. There was a secondary concert entirely going on behind Robert and Jimmy. Jones’ prowess on Hammond Organ is another thing everyone should hear.
Yes and many people never saw it . Even when John was playing keyboards he was stil playing bass lines

There’s nothing, absolutely nothing simple about what he did in Zeppelin.
A criminally underrated musical genius.

The intro to "Your Time Is Gonna Come" was my introduction to John's musical talent, way back, when I was school. It still remains one of my favourite intro's to a Zep track.
Agreed. This man made “sense” of Zeppelin, in particular playing live. Of all three members, the best musician in my modest opinion. 👏👏👏

I heard Keith Moon said it would go down like a lead Zeppelin, which makes just as much sense, literally. This was many years ago that I heard this.
