It's been 30 years! Thank you so much. Overshot was my favorite .
Fun! Welcome back!
Ooooo okay I gotcha! It took me a while to wrap my head around this because I never realized two shuttles. Then I couldn’t understand how you could weave the same pattern treadle and I didn’t realize tabby in between 🤦♀️ BUT this is one of my greatest mysteries that has been solved today! Thank you ☺️
I'm so glad this was helpful!! Yay!!
I'm a super newbie, and this video also gave me so many 'ooooooooooh I see now' moments
@@jocelynsmyth6604 Fabulous! I'm so glad it was helpful!!
Thanks for a great video! I was having a hard time understanding exactly how overshot worked just from reading about it, and this really cleared it up.
Oh yay!! I'm so glad it was helpful!!!
it's been 10 years , thanks for a great refresher
I'm so happy to help!
I've been wanting to try overshot and now I will. It doesn't seem so mysterious after watching your video. Thank you!
Oh yay! I'm so glad they were helpful!!
Thank you Chris ❤️ I’m not ready for Overshot yet but soon. I really appreciate the simplicity with which you’re able to explain things. Sometimes I think weavers make things seem much more complicated than they needs to be.
Susan, thank you so much for the kind words! I'm here for you, whenever you're ready!
Thank you Chris. I now think I can begin on my pattern with this overshot. I wasn't clear before I started your video and now "I see". thanks.
I'm so glad it was helpful!!! Yay!
Thank you!
I'm glad it was helpful!
Agh! Left and right tabby treadles! Great idea!
Oh yay! I'm glad it was helpful!!
I gave the treadling trick for the tabby weave to my friend. She definitely liked the logic.
Oh, fabulous! I'm glad it helped!
Thanks. Big help. Using iWeaveit for my pattern and doing the tabby first makes it so easy to keep track along with putting the tabby on 1 & 6. Happy weaving! ~ Karen
Karen, I'm so glad it was helpful!
That’s the pattern I hope to do for my daughters throw ( for her confirmation gift. ) I plan to do with a blue tone yarn for the overshot- one of her requests.
That'll be beautiful! And what a sweet, thoughtful gift!
Thank you so much! I'm about to start my first overshot project and thanks to your clear instructions and tips, I finally feel like I can do this! 😀
You can do it, Kathy!
I have watched several of your videos and you make processes very clear and understandable...thank you much!
Caroline, thank you so much! I love hearing feedback, especially if I'm on the right track!

I am so excited to have found your channel. Yay ❤️🙏
I'm so glad you're here! Welcome!
@@ActonCreative I haven't really gotten a chance to look at all of the videos
So question
Do you talk about how to do a double wide weave on a four harness loom?
@@iamlove757 I haven't yet! I do talk about creating a tube using double weave. But, I haven't touched on double the width yet. Great idea!!
SO EXCITING! 😃😃😃😃😃
Very helpful, thank you for the video!
My pleasure! I'm glad it was helpful!
I'm struggling with how to thread/tie up tabbi in and amongst the pattern....I thought I did it but now that I've tied on and started to set up I'm not sure that I did...😬
This was very helpful. Thank you.
I'm so glad!! Thanks for letting me know!!
Thank you, it really helps to understand.

Awesome video !
Thank you so much! I'm glad it was helpful!!
I am doing Friendship towels with a one shuttle treading and I now understand that part of the patern is the plain weave...
Oh yay! I hope your towels turn out simply gorgeous!!
Hello, I admire your work. I am a textile technician for 20 years. I would like to do what you do in your style. Can you help me?
❤
Hi Chris. I am wanting to do this pattern for my daughter's wedding. I am wearing a Navy dress and it is a sunrise wedding in Maine in September so it will be chilly. I would love to do something with Navy and Gold but I am struggling with choosing yarn. I know the warp will be Navy and I would love some sort of variegated gold and navy for the pattern. My question is choosing the best yarn for a warmer shawl in this pattern. Do you have any recommendations? Also, thank you for your fantastic videos. I am a brand new weaver and your teaching technique is spot on!
@@pennywortman5084 Hi Penny! What a great project! This sounds lovely! Have you ever played with a hand-painted warp? That could be a beautiful option! Here's an episode to give you some ideas - ruclips.net/video/E5UAi84sRvM/видео.html
@@ActonCreative I just watched the video and I love the idea of a hand-painted warp. One of your tips is to use a less complicated pattern. Would the Wandering vine work with a hand-painted warp and a solid weft? And I assume they could be the same weight since I don't need the weft to "pop" given the warp? Weaving is so different from knitting and I am a knitter so I get confused very easily. Thank you so much for your quick reply and all of your help.
@@pennywortman5084 Great question! I would still use a weft that's bigger than the warp, even with a hand-painted warp.
Just a note for you - the Wandering Vine pattern is big. It requires many warp yarns for 1 repeat. That's not a bad thing, just something to consider as you plan your project.
Love your pep talk! And explanations are so clear ^_^
Thank you! I'm glad it was helpful!
I guess this is great for a more experienced weaver than I am at the moment. A bit too much for me, but I’m sure I will come back,in due time.
Camilo, I totally understand! It's here if/when you're ready! Happy Weaving!
I took a beginners weaving class on a 4 shaft table loom last fall and the 3rd project was over shot. As soon as I understood the tabby instruction, it was easy. I think it does help to use 2 different colors, a neutral for the warp and your color. Once you see the pattern popping out, it's fun.
@@1qtaz That's amazing, doing overshot that early in the learning process! Great job! It is a lot of fun, isn't it?
@@ActonCreative Well, as I "promised" I am back and ready to tackle an overshot project. This second time around your video made A LOT more sense.
@@camilorojas1744 Woohoo!! Look at you go!! Just holler if you need any clarification!
make life easier👍
Really great tips! Sadly my 4 shaft loom only has 4 treadles. 😬
Oh, how interesting, Cindy!!! You can absolutely still do overshot with 4 treadles! I would recommend a direct tie-up, so shaft 1 is tied to treadle 1, 2 is with 2, and so on.
Then, the trick is in reading the pattern. You'll probably be depressing multiple treadles at a time for each toss of the shuttle. But, it's still possible!
Let me know if you give it a go, how it works for you!
Thanks for the tips. I'm just having a hard time hearing your voice. Is it the setting of your phone's mic?
Hi Vincent! I'm so sorry! I'm not sure - I haven't heard that comment from others! Hopefully it's an easy fix!
I am from Morocco, I work for an American company in the textile sector
That's very cool!
Send me a picture of some designs and I will do a study and technical paper
What size yarns and epi are you using for this? It looks really balanced and nice!
Hi Karsten! Thank you! I'm so sorry that I don't remember the details! But when doing overshot, I always use the same warp yarp for the background shuttle, and a yarn (or combination of yarns) that is 2x as big for the pattern shuttle. I hope that helps!!
@@patriciacassidy7461 Hi Patricia! Thank you so much for your comment! Can you please clarify what you're looking for? Thanks!
@@patriciacassidy7461 Hi Patricia! Thanks for the feedback! I'll definitely give it some thought!
Thanks for this great video Chris! I was also wondering what the limit is on the number of weft colors you can have or is it limited to two colors only?
Ooh, good question!! There is no limit!!! Go crazy! However, managing 2 shuttles can be tricky enough. So, I would recommend switching colors as often as you like, while sticking with only 2 shuttles.
Now, with that said, you may very well be much more coordinated than I am! So if you feel inspired to juggle all the things at one time, go for it! More power to you, my friend!!
Let me know how it goes!! Happy Weaving!!
@@ActonCreative That's great! I will try it as soon as I get the chance and let you know what happens.
@@simplerworld6897 Please do! I'm excited for you!

I have my loom set up With 150 ends 5EPI I'm wondering if I can use that And do overshot with it It is with hands In solid gray. I understand Overshot I need 1 pic Of grey And I could use a double thread of blue for the pattern. Is this possible With the warp I have on
Thanks for the note! It all depends on your threading. Overshot patterns tend to have more involved threadings versus other patterns. So if your threading is okay, I say give it a try! Let me know how it goes!
i actually haven't threaded the loom yet. i have it set for 5epi and 150 ends with 2 floating selvages on either side. i was goingn to do a different pattern but i always wanted to do overshot and didn't know if i could still do it with the threads i have on the back beam.@@ActonCreative
2 questions if i may
1.
So for my direct draw loom (4 shafts 4 treadles) i always have to push 2 treadles for tabby (1+3 - 2+4) right.
I am a fresh newbie to weaving and have to write out my treadling patern and use it untill it is finaly stuck in brain😁.
2.
Is overschot always 1 on 1 with tabby?
So i mean it like this
Weaf one pick tabby then weaf one pick patern then tabby then patern.
Am i making any sense? In my brain it does😁
Hi Andrea! Great questions!
You absolutely have the right idea when working with a direct tie-up loom! However, with overshot you may have a different combination of shafts that will create a tabby pattern. It depends on the weaving draft.
For instance, I once had a pattern where half the warp yarns were on shaft 1. So tabby looked like (1 - 2+3+4). Just keep an eye on that, per your pattern.
As for the second question, yes! Throw a tabby pick, then a pattern pick, and repeat. You've got it!
The goal of the tabby is to provide structure while the pattern does all the glamorous stuff over top of it!
I hope that helps!! Let me know if you have other questions!
Chris, is it possible to adapt this to a tapestry loom?
Hi Annie! It would require a lot of counting, but yes, absolutely! I've never tried it myself! If you give it a go, let me know what your experience is like!
@@ActonCreative, thank you!
In overshot can you use 6 weft yarn for the pattern and 3 for the tabby per shuttle to progress faster? And would it affect the structural integrity of the cloth? Thanks
Hi! Great question! The goal is a tabby where the warp & weft are about the same size. That'll give you a nice sturdy base to support the pattern. I hope that helps!!
@@ActonCreative Yeah it does! Thank you 💝
You give me the design book
Hi! The book I refer to in the video is the Handweaver's Pattern Book, by Marguerite Porter Davison. Is that what you're asking?
Can my warp be 8/2 cotton if I’m using merino wool for the weft?
Sure! You just need to be aware that those 2 fibers will act very differently in water.
And for the best overshot results, you want your weft to be noticeably larger than your warp.
You've got this!
What are the best choices to use together?
@@dianerobinson1946 With an 8/2 cotton warp, a 3/2 cotton weft would work great!
One more question! If I want my weft to be wool what would my best option for warp be? Thank you so much❤️
@@dianerobinson1946 A finer wool would be nice! Otherwise, a cotton is a great option!
