I have a hole in a wall where the door handle went through....it's a lever type handle so the hole is long horizontally. I've avoided repairing it for so long because I knew it would need more than spackle, but I didn't know what. Now I do!!! Thank you so much!

Can you trim down the mesh or is it better to use the whole piece for a hole about 2"x2"?

If the piece of mesh is much larger than the hole, you can trim it down, but you want to leave enough overlap on the wall to support it.
