I live in Oregon and in the same county as the district being talked about in the story. A lot of what this comes down to is how the laws are interpreted. In this case the school district chose to see the law of mandatory reporting to include consenting minors having sex and excluded the Romeo and Juliet clause (which is for similar ages to participate in sex behavior but not be categorized as abuse). Oregon, like other states, are not all on party affiliation. Portland is mostly liberal while the Salem area has a lot of conservative ideology. If you look at county voting maps Salem is red and Portland is blue. Not all school districts in Oregon are doing what the Salem-Keizer School district is doing. Parents, teachers and students are petitioning for change. People want the best for the students but the way that the district is trying to do that in this case is not connecting and needs to be thought out more. Outreach and transparency would go farther if they want more kids to be safe. That also comes down to who is in the power positions. The endless cycle... Sorry for the rant.
