A couple weeks ago, Hunter Honda and I took out my Yamaha R6 and R1 for some races. While on my R1, Hunter hit 170, faster than I'd ever gotten it up to. Of course, I couldn't stand for that ;)

What speed does that happen? Someone told me years ago it was 150, then i went that fast and nope, no way - still stripes. Still easy to see. Must be like 275-350mph maybe.
lifeisgood070 depends on the FPS of the camera. Doesn’t happen in real life except at crazy speeds you can’t achieve on a bike.

The 15-20 R1's have very accurate speedometers due to taking speed off both wheels instead of off the front sprockets due to the ABS system. So you can throw whatever sprockets you want and it will never effect the speedo.

Weather conditions can also affect top speed. The outdoor temperature, elevation, humidity, and wind speed and direction all come into play.
If the speedo is off the odo is off. Odo is off maintenance is off. Maintenance is off bike is off. Bike is off. Bike is off.

The R6 2009 I had would run 160mph with stock gearing it had plenty of power left but no rpm’s.

Oooh this video is gonna make some of the sport bike fanboys soooo upset. I once had this exact discussion with an acquaintance who happens to be a sport bike fanboy. Not the educated and intelligent kind of sport bike fan, but more of a 'riding in camo shorts, flip flops and a backwards baseball cap' type sport bike fan.
Anyway he ended up so heated he almost wanted to fight me when I pointed out that almost all sport bikes have overly optimistic speedos and that no, his bud's stock liter gixxer would not hit "almost 200". As if it's not fast enough for a stock naturally aspirated liter bike to hit 170+.

NitrousController no, if the speedo was off it would have shown that speed, but the speedo on the r1 is accurate.
Damn, I got emotional watching this, and it wasn't even my bike. Doing this to know everything your bike has one last time before it's gone, is just powerful.
Yep, you've got my 929RR beat. Well said with the errors as well. I had to get a speedo tuner after my sprocket set went on. Different feeling a lot slower reading a lower number while riding, but with hour commutes, you want to know your correct speed. Kudos on the max out!

I freaking love the sound of the R1
I appreciate your honesty, unlike others. I'm realistic about my bikes performance being a ZX6r. My bike speedo is 7% off and my best is a 170mph indicated. which translates to 158 mph. So tired of other ZX6 riders claiming a bogus numbers just because the speedo says otherwise. Give up a 600 will only do at best 165 mph even after work. Max rpm is max rpm which with factory gearing is 156 - 165 mph. You may get there quicker with more hp but top speed is about rpm and gearing.
At 8:46 I like how he head checked to change lanes like there was someone tailing him at 135 mph 😂
Got my ‘04 R1 last Monday. Got it to 171 and I had enough fun and slowed down lol

R1 ‘til 2014 are not software (through ECU) limited (like 2015-2017 are). Speedo doesn’t show in any case more than 299/189, but in pre-2015 models revs keep on climbing in 6th gear more than 13krpm. Regarding your topic, whenever one changes final transmission ratio (from dif. from sprocket, for example) that indeed changes the speedo error. You can alter it using “Speedo Healer”. Factory my stock R1 has 6% speedo error, in excess. Great vlog, keep them coming

My 04, by GPS, clocked in at 181. I pulled off with it having a bit more to go, almost redline. I don't know what mods you have (mine: -1 c/s, Graves full ti, stacks, power commander with custom map, speedo healer).

Changing the sprockets on bikes DOES NOT throw the sensor for the speed off, on most bikes the speed sensor for the speedo is on the front or rear wheel, meaning they speedo would read correct, only way it could throw it off is if the sensor is on the gear box, but that is unnecessarily complicated

Just download the speedometer so you can see the top speed that You have ridden. The app is in contact with a satelite so IT can see how hard you where going. Speedometer in Google play IT wil show your topspeed of that ride and how hard you ride in the moment.

I believe that speedometer error is calculated as a +/- meaning that it is +/-6% error. in which case you could be travelling between 6% slower to 6% faster than your speedo reading not always on the faster end, great video though I love seeing the r1 get that kind of love, be safe!

Use the phone GPS app on both. Then there is zero confusion or excuses. R6 vs R1. You have the ram mount right there!

Can you explain why you’re not using your clutch at high speeds? Is it a type of transmission you’re using? Or does it just not matter at that speed?
Tyler Ray If you’re an experienced rider you can upshift without using a clutch similar to cars, that way he doesn’t have to let off the throttle. If he was riding normal he probably would use the clutch.
Wet vs dry clutch. Bikes have a wet clutch, cars have dry clutch. Read about it.

my project bike from 1981 had the speed sensor built into the front axel, so the key to a true read would be to keep the factory circumference tire on the front. or like in most cars, change the gears in the sensor mechanism according to the tire size. So on bikes like that, changing sprockets or even rear tire size would have no effect on speed.

Comparing to the R6, you will probably get more wind buffeting on the R6. You are a lot more aero-dynamic with the track suit for sure. Glad you didn't find the LEO's. Take back that title, LOL!

Case in point: I got a ticket for 57mph in a 45nph zone... Speedo said 67mph. 2006 GSX-R600, 1 down 2 up.

On my 2001 R1 I got a 167.5 mph on gps. K&N air filter 16/43 gearing and exhaust.
