Of the entire ost, this track is on a very different level than the others. Sure, I love the intensity of boss themes or the catchiness of some background tracks, but this just makes me feel a new kind of peace I don't experience often.
It’s a feeling of familiarity. This town, it may gain more residents or lose some. But this is still the town your journey started in. This is a safe place, no amount of funny fire rituals or narcissists or being replaced can change that
This game is just so depressing and sad that when you listen to these soundtracks while knowing the lore of Hollow Knight it just brings tears to my eyes every single time.
When I first played this game I actually had to take a break to play some happier games like Mario, because I was pretty depressed, and this games whole vibe was NOT helping.
0:18 Is something I never realized was there. There's a tiny, almost imperceptible pause, and then another note plays. The slight hesitation allows the next note to be much lower without breaking the flow of the song or adding any intensity to it. The lower note adds so much to the sadness and quiet hesitancy and doubt that permeates Dirtmouth.
@@ahatmaker Regardless, despite my inability to perfectly analyze time signature and rest duration, it’s still not imperceptible and it ended on a prettty solid note when he described it as rather subtle.

As I was listening to it a person playing some sick hip hop beats out of their car window drove by and accidentally remixed this song... and it was epic.
Team Cherry are great guys! To create such a theme that still gives me goosebumps, well, you really need to love your job. I express my gratitude to them for such a wonderful game and music for it.
This track is the reason I bought hollow knight. A friend of mine was chilling in my place, downloaded the game from his account, sat on the bench in dirtmouth and left it there just for the music. Instant hook. Its insane that such a small (at the time) company went the extra mile and created such masterpieces.
Is a back used by a French rapper in the music « mauvais payeur » by « la feve »and the music use a sample from this ost sory in advance my English is crap
It feels like waking up from a dream you like, knowing that whole world will be left in your memories and likely fade in a few seconds, the whole experience lost forever.
At first, this song felt so empty and depressing, like beeng in Dirtmouth was absolute a waste of time, making me leave the town as soon as possible, but after full playthrough, it got actually pretty calming and almost heartwarming, because of how it was consistently safe and calm and you could always come back anytime, no matter of what horrors you had encounter on your path.
You drop from the massive cliff, hearing the rocks of the door you had just shattered smash against the ground with a crumble. You land on the ground, taking a hard fall, and buckling your knees. You see a light in the distance, so instead of worrying about the small pain in your knees, you get up and continue moving forward. The light swells as you get closer. You look up at it. It resembles a lantern, but it holds inside of it three illuminated flies. They glow brightly inside of a glass container. It gives a powerful white light that you can hardly keep your eyes on. You pry your eyes away from the light and look forward again. There are buildings that look old, and some have their doors boarded up. You walk forward and see a single character. Past him is a bench. You see the bench and think if you need to rest. Immediately you are reminded by the pain your knees are in from the fall you suffered, you need to rest. While you sit down, the character moves toward you. You lay one hand on your nail, keeping your guard up. However he does not want a fight. He greets you to the town, even if it has no residents, called “Dirtmouth.” He says that there are many people down in the ruins of Hallownest, and that they haven’t returned. Maybe dreams aren’t such a great idea after all?
I don't know why it made my teared up. I didn't cry for a long time and I wanted to convince my friend to play it through this song but halfway into it I just cried. The GOAT of games in my list.
When I boot up a new save, it isn't going into deepnest that reminds me how dark this game is, it isn't any grandiose moment in the game,. It's hearing the opening notes to this song, and seeing a deserted town that breaks my hear every time. what a game to be able to convey such rich and hollow emotions alike.
This soundtrack is so, so lovely, and I think the Dirtmouth theme really highlights why. It's a very bright/shiny soundtrack while also simultaneously a soundtrack that carries a lot of heavy emotions/vibes.

you come back from a long journey through the underground kingdom, you decide to rest for a bit. The others seem to be happy with you around. You feel safe, and at peace.
somehow it brings a sense of wonder to a nearly empty town desolate but a safe haven in an unforgiving land of corruption and doom it makes you want to sit on the bench next to the elder bug and perhaps... listen to what he has to say and yet despite feeling still and quiet you're pacing with the flow of the music a sense of calm despite the dangers beneath the surface dirtmouth will always be there always for you to come back to a quiet power beneath the loneliness because the village is never quite empty and its power lies in the bugs that populate it despite the emptiness the ones that stayed, despite everything and there's always someone, somewhere, that will come to stay for a while even if they don't stay forever
FUN FACT: theres a little record player like sound that plays during this song:) Others have probably noticed this, or im completely wrong, but its a nice little detail I'll never forget
I'll admit this song really grew on me. I didn't hear it much for a while because I chose to banish the Troupe, and I didn't realize how much I missed it until I started a new save file for achievement purposes. (That being said, I still really love Nymm's version) It always reminds me of the fascination I felt for the game's world and lore when I first started playing, and the wonder of exploring new areas and making discoveries. I've practically played the game front and back now, but I miss that early feeling of discovering how much I already adored the game.

As you walk through the desolate lands that lie beyond the ruined gate through the howling winds you will find a town.
