Thanks - I didn't realise it was a cover! I do find her version more devastatingly moving, personally, though she uses much of the arrangement of the original. She has a knack of choosing great covers, including the equally wonderful Dido's Lament, and Ash's Shining Light (I wasn't a fans of Dave Stewart's songs, except the excellent first single, Sweet Dreams).
This must be one of the greatest music videos ever made, it is certainly one of my favourites, and Annie Lennox has never looked more beautiful. They don't make 'em like that any more..
This was the song that saw me through chemotherapy in the early 1990s. I played it over and over and got to know every word, every note, every instrument used. Thank you so much 💓
You know not only is Annie an amazing vocalist but if you look at the music videos I think she has just a strong presence on camera I bet she would’ve been an amazing actress as well her persona and camera presence was astounding very powerful indeed!
This song is not about loss of lover or depression. This about going through dementia. Her grand mother. One of the first things to go is ability to express love. As memory leaves, so do the words. " No more I love yous, the language is leaving me in silence, no more I love yous, changes are shifting outside the word."
She didn’t write this song, the original is by the lover speaks and is about how breaking up means you lose the language of love! However I agree when Annie was singing it she’s relating it to dementia x
This reminds me of my Grandmother's 30+yr battle with Alzheimer's. When my Grandfather died her soul shattered and she just left....the light in her eyes was gone. I had watch her rot away slowly it was such a horrible death I would only wish it upon my most hated enemy.
I was about 11 months in recovery when this came out, i was living in south Central L.A., trying to feel my way. Here I am, coming up on year 29, and this song is still in heavy rotation for me. I'm so glad its a part of my life's soundtrack.
National anthem for all of those who have come out on the other side of a really bad relationship, with a person, substance or anything that has stopped you from reaching your natural potential. I salute you, because if it is true that you left pieces of your heart along the way…you are a better person.
I 'gave' 30 years to a man who turned into a heroin addict. I never thought I'd 'adapt' to anything that dealt with drugs, OR alcohol. My heart has suffered so. 😪
Annie Lennox has so many great songs, but I think this is still my personal favorite. The crafting and arrangement of this song, along with Annie's haunting vocals, chokes me up and leaves me speechless every time I hear it. It's pure musical genius!
This song is unbelievable! When you're going through a break up and you can't eat or sleep or even think straight and acting like a lunatic and that amazing day comes after god knows how long, you're actually getting over it, this song rings so true! No more demons anymore! Beautiful
Too true, I lost my "true love", but then found a new freedom without her. I felt guilty at first and then realized I found a new better version of myself without her. Funny thing I've always liked this song, never knew how much it would reflect a part of my life. Thank You Annie
Amazing Lady fantastic voice and a lovely person. I have been here in Perth WA Australia for 45 years and wish her all the best life can offer her. Go Scotland.
Unfortunately, it took me too much time to appreciate this song. It is so good in all different ways. Annie's voice, the music, the delivery, the atmosphere it provides and the lyrics. Thanks Annie for so beautiful music.
This song saw me through a difficult separation and struggling to start a new life for myself and my young son. Thank you Annie, for your magical song, your voice expressing the wounded parts of me out loud. You helped me heal.
I went to see Sting a few years back, and Annie Lennox was opening for him. She hadn't been on stage for some time, (so I was told) and she did this song flawlessly. So much so that Sting came from backstage clapping along with everyone else and hugged her. That truly was a magical music moment I'll never forget.
That would have been a sight to see. Going back on stage after years, if not decades shows considerable strength and determination for any performer. Usually when people reach that age it is because they love it. It was worth the read.
I'm also 71 and loved growing up in the freedom year's and Anny Lenox is someone I think is as free in her mind, and can say what she feels in her brilliant and fantastic songs.
I'm glad that you to had those days of freedom, as it's difficult for people to have that chance to experience what we had, and I still have those memories to this day, can I ask you where you were brought up🤔
This song came on my playlist the day after my father died five years ago. I was driving and had to pull over to cry because I finally realized just how final death really is. This coming Monday marks five years since his passing and this song still hurts my heart.
I used to feel uneasy watching & listening to this MV during my childhood but as I've grown older, I now appreciate the artistic masterpiece she aimed to convey.
@@jeremyalexander9761 exactly some groups are just meant to be, that's why their sound was and is still so unique still till this day, once again that's just my humble I love ANNNIE LENNOX opinion.
A real masterpiece. It's not only the lyrics It's her wonderful performance It's a mix of feelings, grief, sadness ,disappointment for loving someone who doesn't love you back... . It seems that I'm seeing myself on her. This song is giving me relief it's time to let it go and no more I love you's.Annie you're amazing ❤
I remember playing this song the day after a relationship with a girl I cared for ended. I then met my dream girl married was so in love...then she wanted a divorce after 17 yrs. I came here to remember thinking my wife would put all those other memories away for me...now I have two bad memories.......the song is so sad...I find it so hard to think I wont be saying I love you anymore......
My dad died 3 years ago, this was one of his favourite songs. One of the last things he said to me before he stopped being able to talk was ‘I love you’. I was so blessed but I’m so heartbroken 💔 this will forever remind me of him x
I'm sorry about your dad Siobhan, I know what it's like to lose a parent n have a song that reminds u of them ,♥️♥️♥️ one consolation is that our respective songs remind us that we had the privilege of having our loved ones in our lives n have lots of special times that we can treasure forever more n if it helps , my late mum n ur dad will be up there singing their hearts out so that we can all hear it down here
How quickly a song can take you back to a certain memory, down to who you were with, what they were wearing. I lost my father in 2021 and it was one of the hardest days of my life. I miss him so much and I think about him everyday. My Dad loved all different types of music and this song reminds me of when we used to drive 9 hours to Orlando, FL to go see family during the summer. He had this briefcase that was for holding cassette tapes, and a lot of the time he would ask me to grab him one, but sometimes he would let me choose. I took my cassette tape out of my cassette player and put in Annie Lennox and I remember him looking confused and then he just had a big smile on his face and he laughed. We listened to side A and B of the cassette and just hearing this song today, it brought me right back to that day. Love you and miss you Pops.
Snap know exactly what you miss my dad miss too with no one else left for me Depression is a on going living night mare this vid portrays it well but also shares a light of hope x
I never grasped the blatant genius of Annie Lennox as an artist when I was younger and I was genuinely annoyed by most of her songs. Today that I am older, I see why she has the lengendary status she absolutely deserves! What a song!
This song reminds me of my grandparents standing with me on New Year’s Eve watching the fireworks in London even though they died when I was growing up as a teenager. They never leave me ever best night it was.
And it makes me realize how today's songs are nowadays. No, it's not just the getting old. Today's songs don't have this level of artistry and vocal performance.
I lost my nana several years ago during my 1st pregnancy. She had forgotten everyone during her last days. I never got to hear her voice before she passed on. I haven't heard an "I love you" from her in close to a decade. Never got to properly grieve. She raised me when my mother could not, and I was so ashamed. Miss you, Nana
The intensity of that look from Annie’s eyes. As powerful as the song. I’m 42-years-old now, and I remember the song when it first graced us. #AnnieLennox #Timeless
@@Dularr Cause let’s face it the Beautiful voices of children change through puberty. Madonna was 20 in ‘78 so you are correct, I believe Annie was born in ‘54. Both had/have their wonderful voices for their careers. I can’t tolerate christmas music especially with what’s set for January. Yet, the most Beautifully Wonderful rendition of Winter ❄️ Wonderland is Miss Annie’s.
Once had the son of a dementia patient I was looking after tell me that this song broke his heart, his mother no longer recognized him... so despite her being alive, she was unable to give him any more "I love yous"... Completely changed the meaning of the song for me.
That is my absolute biggest fear in life, hands down. My mother looking at me and having no clue who I am. My heart goes out to the guy. And that really does kind of provide an alternative context for this song.
Such a hard thing for a family to go through...my wife works in a nursing home and seems to be particularly fond of the dementia patients...couldn't imagine...
I used to call the radio station to request this song and played out loud when I was twelve! I cried when Annie won the grammy and was amazed by the music video! Almost thirty years later, its still burned in my heart and mind, love you Annie!
Here it is September 2018 & this song still one of my old time favorites. I am 58 & still enjoy listening to this beautiful, captivating, song by Annie. Sing on girl, beautiful song!!
I heard this song a long time ago...couldn't work out what it meant...until my mother pased away. The last few years of her life she suffered a mental disorder...dementia. She forgot who I was, how much I loved her and cared for her. She didn't understand the words "I love you mum"....irregardless I kept on telling her this till she passed on. Mum ..I love you forever and always will!!
That's a lovely story, Zadrach Ginuni. When my wife left me many years ago I started thinking a lot about my parents who were divorced and lonely and who I only saw very rarely because I was living abroad. I decided to write them both a long letter thanking them for being such good parents and telling them how much I loved them. Somehow I never found a way of saying all the things I wanted to say to their faces so I decided to do it in a letter. I have now lost both of them and it is agony, but I know that they both know how much I loved them. You just never know when you will lose the people you love.
I'm with you there. I was 13 or 14 when this song was new. After having lived and loved and so secretly losing those loves, this song hits harder and has new meaning.
PS. This 'themed' album is a sentimental, yet an uplifting tonic for me. Take it for what it is... perhaps this album will fit into your life, and in a positive way! enjoy the music! ruclips.net/video/iNVkEllZdV8/видео.html
Joel, my heart goes out to you. I am living again after my 'soul mate' of 24 years left me. The anguish I felt playing the original of this song by The Lover Speaks was indescribable. Now divorced, I am starting to live and love again. You cannot know it now, but so will you.
This is one of those covers that no one knows *is* a cover. “The Lover Speaks” did the original and it’s also wonderful. How lucky are we to have two versions of a fantastic tune.
I bought the original on cassette waaay back in the day (1986), fabulous song, was so glad when Annie covered cos it actually meant The Lover Speaks got to make scads of money from a classic song that never got the plaudits it deserved on its initial release.....
This song strikes right at the heart in the dementia community. One of the first things to disappear in a person with dementia is the ability to display and convey affection....they lose the ability to say...I love you.
This makes me realise how much my wife means to me. I can't imagine life like that,I think I've been taking her for granted. From the bottom of my heart thank you for writing this and helping me realise this.

Right here! 10/24 Ms. Lennox isn't just a popular artist, I'm sure you will agree. She has a big compassionate heart. And she's beautiful and full of grace.
I have never been so captivated by a music video. Must have watched this at least 200 times. So many stories within stories. Still discovering things in it after all these years. Bravo/brava!
Its wonderful, but I also recommend Michael Jackson's Stranger in Moscow. Video is astounding - stories within stories, as with this one. I hope you like it.
@@davidbrittain3212 thanks for recommending the video. I was not familiar with it. I had a hard time connecting the song title with the video (which to me was clearly taking place in the US). But the slow-motion rain sequence in the second half of the video was amazing.
It's incredible to read the comments about the unique impact this song has had on people. It's a poignant reminder of my childhood and to this day it has a real hold on me. The instruments mixed with the comforting distant background vocals lives you yearning for a taste of a past that once was.
What does the song mean to you ?? I came to the comments to see what others interpret the meaning of this song as .... to me, it seems as though it is a song about a person who once loved but because of their disappointments, life experiences etc they have lost/ forfeited the ability to love any longer but along with that inability comes not only an acceptance of that but also a sort of stability ... no more torment... I am curious to hear what others feel the song is saying to them ?
But…oh, my goodness, men in ballet tutus didn’t corrupt and confuse you and undermine your marriage as an adult…? 🤷🏻♂️ It’s strange to see that three decades later, Americans are still panicking over drag being the melting point of human civilisation. And now right-wingers even in Britain are importing this pearl-clutching. (Pretty much to the bafflement of the generations who grew up with Danny La Rue and Lily Savage as prime time family entertainment.)
My dad used to play these songs when I was a lil toddler and now I’m 24 living on my own all all these 80,90 and early 2000s coming back to me! Such fantastic music era! Will never be the same again! These songs are memories I wouldn’t change! ❤

I think the powers that be had a serious problem with artists singing about war and other serious social issues. Highly talented creative artists sing about many different subjects, so they had to go. As long as the masses are ignorant and shallow we won't start trying to fix problems in the world and changing their carefully crafted system. Songs about sex and love are safe. So we hear them over and over again . Thinking about love and sex a lot could also bring more babies into the system.
As a child of the early 70's I appreciated Annie in my teens and now at nearly 50...her songs, her strength, her incredible beauty still brings me to a place no other artist ever has. She is and always has been such an amazing artist and such a beautiful person, the like of which will never be repeated.

Thank you so much 💓

absolutely and indisputably wonderful 3:00
Sure, the same with the film clip, a lot messages.

National anthem for all of those who have come out on the other side of a really bad relationship, with a person, substance or anything that has stopped you from reaching your natural potential. I salute you, because if it is true that you left pieces of your heart along the way…you are a better person.

Annie Lennox has so many great songs, but I think this is still my personal favorite. The crafting and arrangement of this song, along with Annie's haunting vocals, chokes me up and leaves me speechless every time I hear it. It's pure musical genius!

And
Someone better awaits

I went to see Sting a few years back, and Annie Lennox was opening for him. She hadn't been on stage for some time, (so I was told) and she did this song flawlessly. So much so that Sting came from backstage clapping along with everyone else and hugged her. That truly was a magical music moment I'll never forget.

That would have been a sight to see. Going back on stage after years, if not decades shows considerable strength and determination for any performer. Usually when people reach that age it is because they love it. It was worth the read.

Everything about this era was perfect. The styling, the concept, the vocals and of course the song.
