White Limba | Korina Explorer Wood | single piece blanks
Korina Explorers were made famous by Gibson Guitars in the 1950's. As one of Gibson's radical futuristic models, the Explorer design was unlike any other electric guitar shape seen to that point. Also released by Gibson at that time were the Moderne, Flying V and Futura.
Using White Limba sourced from Africa, Gibson re-branded the White Limba as Korina.
Many boutique and production guitar companies now produce vintage-style Explorer guitars. However, the availability of luthier-quality Korina has limited the amount of true Korina Explorers being produced today.
Additionally, finding White Limba that is both instrument-quality and large enough to make a single-piece Explorer body blank with no glue-lines is really tough.
Korina Explorer body blanks are difficult to find in single piece (1 piece) dimensions. Although individual templates may vary, most standard Explorer body blanks require a minimum width of 18" and a length of 26-28".
Explorer-sized White Limba blanks are rare, so finding one for a custom build sets your Explorer apart from most other Explorers on the market.
However, having graded thousands of board feet of Korina lumber over the years, there are two things you should be aware of once you find a single piece White Limba blank.
In this short video, I show you two issues related to 1 piece Korina blanks that can needlessly complicate your Explorer build.

Steve Ondich not at all, I was just about to carry my one piece Korina body blank over to the CNC machine. Fortunately, I saw this first.

Are you talking about a specific guitar body style or would the information apply to any guitar body? I know you were referring to an explorer template but I am not sure if that is a general term for any guitar blank. Thanks Steve!

The information applies to any body style. However, the Explorer body style is one of the widest and longest that I'm aware of. Basically, the wider a solid piece of wood is, the more issues you're likely to run into regarding stability and drying/checking.

I fill cracks and try to make them look like mineral or worm streaks.
