I was watching the video and I never really knew a lot about sensei’s divining top!
They made a commander deck that cares about equipment but didn't put in Greaves or Boots? Equip 0 is one of the key ways for this commander to modify the tokens it makes, give them a counter so they stay modified, then equip other thing to keep distributing counters.

I didn't realize there was a kickstarter for a new deckbox 😞 especially if it's been designed by the Professor then it's gonna be awesome.
Any chance of a late backer option? I would love to get that signed package since it looks like there was 2 left at the end.
I really look forward to these videos. No fluff every second of these videos provides value and is much appreciated!!
They are still far lower than the average Commander Precons. Before 2018 they would put things like Grave Titan, Wurmcoil Engine, Mirari's Wake, and other at the time expensive reprints into the Precons. Now, they won't but they typically find solid niche cards that need reprints and put them in the Precons.
Then came the 2018, which banked on the value coming from the new cards and it was a flop. Granted some of those cards are now somewhat expensive, but that also because Wizards won't reprint them so there's a limited number of them.
Why Prof is going into value is because at various point the Commander Precon use to be cheaper, and the whole justification for raising the price was because they would put more value into the decks.
Is it worth it to watch the professor?
Yes, yes it is. I give him an A+, a must watch.
I don't even play MTG anymore and I still watch him. Good information and entertaining
@@Srcsqwrn neither do I, but I feel like what The Professor says needs to be heard. I wish he existed when I was buying Magic, maybe then I'd still be playing.
@@WT6X Absolutely. I feel like what the professor does is cut through the BS and tells you how things are from a consumer perspective which is NEEDED with how strong the capitalist structure works for MTG.
I remember watching him when he first started and was still teaching, it wasn't too long after I started playing and got super interested in it, with his help to spike the interest even more
The professor isn't always correct, but does offer a good enough job by offering consistency and high quality with each new video. Dare I say, these videos even give you an idea of what to expect. maybe his opinions are or are not adequate enough, but at least you're going to get a decent idea of where all things Commander are at.
something about seeing Rampant Growth at 7:02 rolling directly into Sakura-Tribe Elder, with your playmat in the background, really did it for me.
I REALLY like the proxy commanders over the oversized ones, cuz now i can use the proxy as the commander and i can sometimes put the original commander card in a another deck inside the 99
I agree, they're way more practical than the oversized foils
Yeah I really don’t see the point of oversized cards
What do you do if the card is somehow bounced into you deck, though?
@@sailordaigurren8225 can’t happen anymore unless you physically choose it to and most commanders have no reasonable scenario for that.
exactly !
Its unfortunate that the 20 dollar decks were erased so quickly. They were great value.
You just know some ****** bean counter popped a gasket at that when he learned customers were actually getting value.
@@nothing4mepls973 right? They accidentally watched this or the command zone and went full throttle Montgomery Burns on the whole op
Funnily enough, Elven Empire remains one of the best out-of-the-box decks in YEARS. I mean, it's hard to make a bad Elf deck given how busted the tribe is but whoever made that deck didn't try to screw the product deliberately
I really wish they produced more of the inexpensive commander decks. They really reduced the barriers for newer players.
As someone who only keeps maybe 20-40 cards from any precon and replaces the rest, the 20 dollar decks were awesome.
The greatest villains and the greatest heroes in magic videos are phenomenal. Thank you! Please keep making videos along these veins. There are dozens of us that love them, DOZENS!!!
Man if only there were some really expensive equipment cards that needed reprints that would synergize really well with a modified matters comander. Like if there were a, I dunno, cycle of swords that maybe had two effects that made them super strong? Shame nothing like that exists.
Or even blood-forged battle-axe, which would be great for the go-wide part. Or a new one you could show bounce for value, which has been, RARELY, a red thing to do.
Sadness.
Hahaha why would they do that when people literally showed wotc that they'd pay $100 for VIP boosters with Double Masters.
@@zztzgza the whales 🐋
They literally took out the swords from Gavin’s deck in the secret lair
Yeah but if you fill it up with swords there's no room left for 30 basic lands.
These decks run more basics than the mono colored precons
I remember when commander was only a yearly product, and I was excited for the next cards now I couldn't care less. We still don't have reprints for many cards that are over $50. I what a yearly commander legends that reprints much needed cards.
and the single-plane commander releases are sad! I loved being surprised by seeing what would be included and referenced.
because commander is crap. its only for casual play. when will people realize this! none of the cards are tournament legal; if they have that commander symbol on them. the only reason some of those commander cards are high priced; is becuase people still buy the commander product. once that stops. the commander variants will tank in price. just watch.
@@ChickenMcThiccken Ignoring the fact that they are legal in vintage and legacy, they hold value because commander is fun for most players. Not everything has to be competitive to be valuable.
@@alicekjer6676 Right? If Wizards wanted people to play 60 card competitive they'd reprint the damn landbases in meaningful quantity. It's the #1 thing keeping people out of several formats. Commander is the game in social mode for a reason, the politics and unexpected plays in Commander is vastly different to netdecking modern and playing 1v1.
@@ChickenMcThiccken You’re completely false in saying the cards aren’t tournament legal. As long as it’s a reprint of a card legal in whatever format it can be played. Who actually told this? Also not everything is about competitive, it’s a game (you know, meant for fun). Shit some of my funnest games were playing kitchen table with 100+ card decks that had questionable strats.
My heart is telling me no... But my body, my body is telling me yesssss
my brain is telling me no. why waste money on commander cards? please explain?
I think the money is better spent buying an older commander deck or just buying the singles.
@@leandroP2323 NO COMMANDER. they're not tournament legal. its only for casual play. invest in non commander cards.
@@ChickenMcThiccken
1) Commander cards are legacy and pauper legal. There have been commander cards that have broken those formats.
2) CEDH exists.
3) Not everyone plays competitively.
@@ChickenMcThiccken The most played format is Commander. What you think is important does not match Wizard’s own data.
Agreed. Smothering Tithe would have been a good reprint. Just including a reprint of Vedalken Orrery with Buckle Up would have made it worth.
even with a reprint. the price of smothering tithe would go down by like a dollar at best.
Smothering Tithe is really unfun to play against so I think WOTC is trying to sweep it under the rug and will never reprint it. At least that's what I'm hoping, in sitting on a small fortune of them.
@@snackplaylove it's been my best Modern investment to date. I got absolutely spanked by that Augustine III
I was so bummed out that there was not a talisman of progress again in this deck.
Ahahahahaha, “bummed out”, I’ve given up hope ever seeing a much needed reprint in these money grabber… I mean precons.
just looked at the price on that one comparitively before this vid and damn
Prof! I don't speak for everyone but I'd just like to say that I loved the video yesterday! I hope you don't get discouraged by it, algorithms can punish experimentation, but I thought it was a beautiful project that deserves love and praise. Thank you for all your content!
I’m imagining that they were walking through the factory and saw a giant stack of nissa’s in a box. They all then looked over at the at the assembly line and saw a bunch of mossfire valley
What's sad is this most likely means the cards were completely replaced on the print sheet, not even just left out in assembly.
Just want to say that Magic greatest hero is one of your best videos, I loved it. Thanks for putting so much into it!
Sorry to hear your greatest heroes video didn't do so well. I watch every video you put out and have for years. Personally, I loved the video and actually found out about some new cards that I'm going to purchase and put into my decks so, thank you.
I miss the days when they gave us a giant card for each of the optional commanders. My criticism with the proxies is essentially the same, I want one for each commander in the deck.
Wizards definitely could be a little more generous with reprints (i.e. pain lands, talismans). I am planning on getting UW because I think the play value comes from the new cards. Even though, I think the new white removal spell is way overrated.
it's mostly hyped as a combo piece instead of a removal spell. I for one think the T3 infinite mana combo with devoted druid is pretty busted...
@@wukevin4027 Oh, that makes sense. I can also see it as good protection for a lot of creatures that don't need to attack. I would be happy if someone turned my Tovolar into a vehicle with it.
My god the painlands. Does anyone know why they're so hesitant to reprint the ally cycle in any capacity, whereas the enemy cycle gets to be some of the cheapest rare duals on the market?
@@rejected1s honestly wizards is trash at reprints . At this point I just proxy anything that isn’t reprinted because it’s just not worth the prices
@@rejected1s I cannot comprehend why they haven't reprinted those yet. Truly, mind boggling.
Good idea to shout out about your last video, Prof. Will go watch now. It's not bad to let your fans know when you were disappointed with the initial reception of something you worked hard on!
The one video I wait for every set release! Thanks Prof 😊
I love this channel! Never saw mtg as a thing on RUclips but once I started committing to brothers war sets I subbed and now whenever I search something mtg and watch it, it ends up being the Prof :)
Thanks to the professor for guiding us in these types of videos, which is far more valuable than any pre-con deck.
I know where to spend the hard earned money I make. Thanks for grabbing these and opening them up for us!
Watching who was the greatest Hero because of your amazing advertising at the end. (Also because I watch every video you post).
Thank you as always brother!
Appreciate you for all of your hard work bringing the MTG community the much needed info that we really need. Thanks for saving me some money, too! Gonna let this this one ride, myself.
Was I watching another Commander video on these decks when I got this notification? Yep. Did I also leave that video to come watch this one? Yep.
Yesterday's video didn't even appear on my timeline! Glad you mentioned it Prof, what a gem!
The recurring gag of dropping the boxes on the floor was awesome 😂
Thanks for the enlightment! Just started playing mtg (or edh) again last week. Your videos really help to get into the game.
Greetings from germany!
I'm just getting back into MTG through Arena. I haven't played since 2004-ish. I used to live for Friday nights at my local comic shop in VA.
Your videos have been so helpful to getting me back in the game. I love how you break things down and the overall feel of your channel. I feel like a kid again playing this game, even though I have kids of my own now lol. THANK YOU!
pre-ordered buckle up because I love the theme, but I had no idea about the staggering difference in monetary value. Thanks a lot Professor!
Now I'll go watch your previous video ;D
Should be noted that buckle up's value has gone up considerably since this was recorded.
One of the card's in the precon is seeing legacy play and its now hovering around the ~$20 mark.
I'm super interested in the Azorious deck purely for the Mecha theme. That being said, I'll wait for this deck to drop under $30 before I pick it up. I hope to see more mechas in the future! :D
I'd wait, but my LGS never discount these things
Honestly I bought the deck myself and it was a lot of fun to play. Unfortunately im not really an artifact player so vehicles seem weird right off the bat in terms of my play style. Just nice to be building a gundam themed deck now
@@whackify Oh yeah for sure, I'm going to build it to theme as well, but will add power pieces. Me not being able to turn off the competitive building in me, I'll probably litter a couple of unique combos that win. The Stations, for instance.
Spouse and I bought both the decks and the Azorius deck annihilated the Gruul deck b03. The Gruul is slow to get ramped up, at least it was for me, where the Azorius is ready to throw down after 3-4 turns. It was hard to sit there and get walloped while trying to get enough mana to play my cards.
I bought the Azorius mecha deck, tons of fun, you can combo aetherflux reservoir with kotori and katsumasa for theoretically infinite 50 damage if you buy a copy of atherflux.
I saw the notification and thougt "is it worth it to but secret lair: street fighter already? that was fast" 😂
That makes two 🤙🏻
Haduken!
I dont play the game physically so for me it would be for collection, so videos showing their value are really good to know whats worth it and whats not.
I really enjoyed the "Greatest Hero" video. And wanted to say thank you for making that one, even though my comment isn't on that video.
Not sure how Buckle Up's value held up in these last 3 months, but I just came back to playing EDH after a 4 year break and I gotta say I'm really impressed with the gameplay of the deck. Not only really playable straight out the box but it contains most of the thematic staples you'd want in a Vehicle deck (granted Vehicles is an inexpensive theme) and it didn't take too many swaps from my personal collection to make it viable in crazier tables.
I always catch your lore videos actually! I don’t get enough lore and I actually turn to you and Rudy as my main magic RUclipsrs. Really good as a podcast type of deal too!
FYI I haven't watched yesterday's video yet because it looked like a video I need to watch with more focus than your regular videos. I definitely planned to watch it, and still do.
Thank you for the research you and your school staff do for the community
Of all the suits I've seen of yours, this one is my favorite!
The Prof. Putting in work as always. Thank you for your tireless efforts and unwavering resolve to educate us!
I really enjoy your videos, you are very much the "Dungeon Craft" of Magic the Gathering. Not sure if you know his channel but both you and Professor Dungeon master share very similar traits from almost essentially entwined game. I get the best of boths worlds and its just great
Love the video!:) I must say you doing those is it worth to buy videos makes me happy and changed my outlook on buying everything I buy!:)
Would love to hear how these decks play against past precons. I think a precons commander battle box is a real possibility!
I own every commander precon unedited and it is fun to sit down with people and just pick random decks every time. Every game is different and fresh, nobody rules the table, and we all have fun
Prof. you and your team are awesome, heading over to watch the Greatest hero vid now, cheers.
MAN! Guardianship or Swat with new commander art would be so sick! Great idea prof! Imagine ever few commander decks they reprint that cycle with the new commanders. Thatd be amazing!
Good morning Prof! Just got my coffee and about to enjoy the breakdown!
I appreciated the greatest heroes of magic video. I watched it the day it was released then watched it again when I got home with a friend. It was a well thought out video just like the villains video. I enjoy most of your videos actually and when I do get on to RUclips you’re the first channel I look up.
Enjoy the release of Kamigawa everyone!
These reviews seems to be missing a key part of these decks; the new cards! I don’t understand why these are never really considered. Are they fun? Are they powerful? Are they versatile? Are they worth owning?
Reviewing new cards is a shitshow for the most part. There are just too many cards in MTG to really be able to take all interactions and synergies into account. Just have to wait to see how they play.
I watch various people do new card reviews.... they are rarely if ever correct as to what the most powerful cards will be.
I loved your heroes and villains videos! They led me down a rabbit hole of MTG lore, I wanted to learn more! Please keep making stuff like that :)
I have literally NEVER played or even held a MTG card but I love watching your videos
I don't know why
I'm also pretty sure I'm never even going to play this game but here I am.. anticipating every upload..
I went back to watch the greatest hero video because of your plea. Hoped the view helped. Thanks for the breakdown
I hope that next time they make a mistake like with Mossfire Valley, the mistake is accidentally reprinting an Alpha Dual
They would recall the product for sure before u even can say "where is my niassa?", since its good for the customer not them.
I actually hate the signet land cycle so much haha. They make sense with some mana doublers and are garbage elsewhere.
@@meteora5576 It might also get them sued by the same people who were outraged that Survival of the Fittest got reprinted as a Judge Promo, so definitely not something we can hope for.
Prof the lore episode you are getting out are all very interesting !
I how my foils come pre-curled right out of the box when I got my precon deck for Buckle Up.
Love that you just kept yeeting the Gruul deck. X D
I literally searched for this 5 minutes before you released it then I saw it pop up. Love you ❤️
these are gonna sit better hold off if you want them.
also kind of suprised they didnt make a ninja deck for this set.
They don't need to. Ninjas are already ridiculously strong and it would become the Edgar Markov situation, where the deck would get easily hemoginized
Then that would mean that they'd have to print a Yuriko but worse and nobody wants that.
1) They already have 2+ ninja commanders.
2) Ninjas got good representation in the set. They have stated that these precons are designed to expand on themes from the set that don't have enough representation.
Blood tokens, spirits, decayed, and whatever the green white mechanic was from Midnight Hunt didn't have much representation in their set.
@@k9commander It was called Coven, but the fact you couldn't remember what it was called probably says all that needs to be said about how much representation Coven got in Midnight Hunt.
satoru umazawa is in the main set and nothing excepting a reprint looking at you commander ninjustu will be a better ninja commander
It was a good video prof, you guys did a great job. I'll watch it again later today just for you!
Thanks for the breakdown, also really dig the tie!
Seems like a whiff from Wizards. I'll pass. Great video, Prof! Also, Wizards boasts record profits from last year, yet the stink of incompetence over a print error mocks us.
as a Canadian who's commander deck box cards have always come curved, straight out-of-the-box due to the cold weather transit, I can happily say that -in my opinion- the new Proxy cards that DON'T EVER COME CURVED OUT OF THE BOX are FANTASTIC!
For my first Commander deck I did consider the other pre constructed decks, but I don’t care about card value or whatever, and the others don’t have mecha so they are automatically less cool. Another great video anyway professor, always really helpful getting into this game.
Prof, I dig that shirt and tie combo! Looking good!
The heroes video was great, I'm one of the rare magic players that don't much care for commander but loves your content.
omfg finally i litterally was freaking out cuz it took so long for this to come out i cannot think for my self and rely soley on the professors opinion to decide wether or not to buy precons
I am so glad you mentioned the Nissa controversy.
Your comment about Sword of Truth and Justice is pretty damning. That card is INCREDIBLE synergy with both the commander and all the other +1/+1 counter cards. That should have been a card that was in the first couple they thought of to put in the deck!
It's a bit of a bummer to see the value on these be so low, the set is pretty cool and looks really nice with the art direction (on regular magic cards, I dislike alternate treatments in most sets).
I really wait for these videos, they are gold to me.
Hey Prof, have you seen the new packaging style for the Kamigawa bundles compared to prior set bundles? Seems they’ve really made an effort to reduce plastic usage, I personally like it and seems in the right direction, only the booster packs themselves left to make recyclable.
Thought it was on topic following your recent video regarding the F&B paper booster packs.
I would be interested in hearing this mentioned as well. When I pre-ordered Buckle Up I was shocked that I could get it at a discounted rate. It's the only way that I want to buy precons going forward. I don't see why the alternate packaging isn't talked about more.
They're currently Amazon exclusive, I believe. Whilst I totally agree that the packaging is hugely preferable to the full size ones (and they're a product I'm buying when available because I want them to make more!), I would say many players would prefer to support their LGS or a dedicated online seller rather than Amazon
@@keithchristmas7315 Supporting an LGS is a very good point. I definitely feel bad being on a budget, but at least I can support my LGS when I get my upgrades.
@@keithchristmas7315 I agree with the LGS point, but my comment was actually regarding the “Bundles” (aka fat packs), which is my fault for commenting it on a precon video as makes it confusing, only as I received my bundle today. They’ve removed the plastic wrapping and a lot of the excess waste they had on them while still being vibrant and appealing, more so even, hopefully they take this same approach with the precons so they can bring them into the LGS while still looking good on the shelf.
@@ArkaosM ah, fair enough. That's on me, didn't read your comment properly
really appreciate these videos prof, I always wait for the 'Is It Worth It' before buying any mtg products 10/10
The professor knocking around the pre cons is very symbolic
I'm sorry to hear that yesterday's video didn't perform as well as you had hoped. For what it's worth, I really enjoyed it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Het Prof! You don't know me yet, but you soon will. I plan on helping out in our format in a massive way and reached out to the Command Zone so I can get started. I'm an extremely smart person and see a lot of problems with how people make decisions in games (Including content creators), and you are one of my favorite content creators, so I want you to help me improve the way players think. Good things are coming your way...
I'm actually a fan of the "proxy" commander cards vs the oversized cards. The oversized cards can't be stored in a standard deck box and are much harder to transport without getting damaged.
Same here: I love the new "proxy" commander cards. They fit into a regular sleeve, can be transported in a regular deck box and they don't bend/warp as easy as the foil commanders do.
Same. I got a giant Kairi card at the prerelease and it was a pain to carry back home. Looks good on the wall though :)
They should just give you one in foil and one in foil etched instead of a thicc piece of cardboard that is effectively garbage
looking fresh my dude, i need that tie for sure.
That orange tie with that blue shirt is so sharp!!
Ahh, a clip with prof! The most eloquent dude around!
Prof this was great! Also i loved your hero one!
Yesterday's video was amazing. I did watch it. You go prof!
Would love to hear the professors opinion on the card kingdom made commander decks like he did for the battle decks.
Are they worth it?
@@Tom-bb3fm I don't know card kingdom don't put out deck lists. So I don't know what cards come in them.
I was so looking forward for this vid before making a purchase.
The decklist they posted mentioned them coming with single copies of appropriate color *Ukiyo-e basic lands*, my deck (and best I can tell yours too) came with just regular basics (though the correct number of them at least, with the Ukiyo-e replaced by a regular basic). I don't personally care too much about said lands, but I think this is even more egregious than the Nissa thing, because the Ukiyo-e lands were actually advertised as being in while Nissa was not.
correct
Glad I have a bunch of Nissa, Voice of Zendikar at home, because I really like the new cards in both decks and plan to pick them up after work today.
Your “Greatest Hero” video is fully packed with awesome!
Also, nitpicking, probably should have gone with “Top Ten Magic Heroes” or something like that. People like their top lists
Thanks Prof! Have a great weekend!
Thank you too!
Thank you as always for this kind of videos, I was thinking about some mechs, and this is valuable info. And now I will go and watch the hero video.
Just wanna say again I love love your content, you consistently provide us with helpful and useful info.
I almost strictly buy singles and (worhwhile) commander boxes at this point and my wallet has you to thank for the fact that I spend significantly less for what I want than peers in my playgroup.
I am honestly surprised to see you prefer the oversized cards, since usually I find our opinions and reasonings behind those opinions in complete agreement with my own. I love the board "proxy" commander cards and think they are an infinitely better option than the oversized cards for actual gameplay. They are the same width and height at as normal cards and can fit in most sleeves, so they take up no extra space on the battlefield compared to the normal commander card, at the same time they are nearly impossible to shuffle into your deck accidentally and easily identifiable even when in the same sleeve as the rest of your deck. The thickness of their cardboard makes foil curl a non issue, and their small size also allows use of the excellent new commander boxes that come with the decks and can hold your entire deck sleeved, admittedly only with certain sleeves (UltraPro is what I know works) and I would like WotC to add a couple of millimeters so it would fit DragonShield as well, but it is still much better than the old boxes. Personally I'd appreciate WotC providing the opportunity to get any cards printed like these commanders, at reasonable prices, but I'm sorry you aren't a fan of the new cards.
Having used the mini deck box, it actually will hold 100 Dragon Shielded cards - it just won't hold anything else.
Alright that adorable schpeal at the end convinced me to watch the other episode. It was too adorable not too.
I just bought my first precons for commander, these reviews really helped me narrow down what I wanted! Going to buy some singles and power it up this weekend! I got both the kaldheim precons for 40 bucks!
Im actually fascinated by the stance. I appreciate the frick out of you prof. Lately I find your vids are heavily weighted to dollar value rather than weighted to playability.
Not to discredit value the main purpose of an entry level deck is just that- you gain entry to the format.
One of the greatest parts about our format is that it is constantly evolving and changing, therefore upgrading or rebranding decks is just part of the program.
To me prof you’ve always been a guy who hasnt been concerned about the dollar value, always putting more weight into playability first.
I understand the dichotomy, if you say they’re fine without cliff notes the pitchforks come out.
I just notice a trend of your content slowly morphing into an investment package more so than a players package.
All the decks you listed also need upgrades- and the point I feel is really lost here and where you’ve missed the mark is using your expertise as a tenured player and valued community member and content creator is to lead your charge.
Tell us which deck fits which playstyle. Is this a deck that even you are interested in wielding because it fits your own style? Is it Timmy? Johnny? Spike? Vorthos? Or maybe another identity fits it better. Who is going to have fun playing this deck right out of the box, without upgrades? Most importantly, is it new player friendly, as a prerelease kit may be? Something to point me to where I can find upgrades- or maybe a ‘cheatsheet’ list of best possible upgrades I can get.
Love your content always, especially when you get mad at Postie
nice!
Bought both already. Ready to play these days.
12:07 Haha nice. I've been wondering if the professor has been doing multiple takes for the little box tossing tricks.
I''ve seen your last video. It was great and artwork is amazing :).
Vehicles precon with Shorikai as the commander is super fun, a few upgrades and it's pretty damn good.
It's hard to hold out sometimes but waiting to buy the precons is definitely the best idea
Unless they bring back the 20 dollar ones lol
Way to be on it Prof! 10 points for Tolaria!
I have watched the heroes video, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! thank you for your insights prof!
Glad to hear it!
