I love my Glow 47" para with focusing rod for the ability to quickly and precisely change how much contrast I have. I also really enjoy my Godox 80cm Octabox. I also find that I tend to use my shoot through umbrellas a lot.

Dear Emily, thank you for this introduction. I use the 120cm deep umbrella, a white beauty dish 70cm and consider now to go for the indirect 150cm /59".

Beautiful images, I love large modifiers like the Wescott 7’ umbrella but don’t use it as often as I’m usually outside and with out an assistant. So therefore, I most often use the Glow series 25” collapsable beauty dish or the 35” octa. I Have some larger Octas as well.

Emily, 3:29 shot w/a 59" Rotalux is absolutely GORGEOUS--It looks like a PAINTING! Thank you for this video!

I like the Elinchrom 53" (135cm) Octa, a useful size for general, soft portraiture. Although it a bit specialised, the Maxilite reflector is great for hard light - that low sun strafing through a window look. I have a couple of Register Wafer boxes and prefer the 75cm as, being quite small, it gives a harder result, great for black and white.

Those two images towards the end with both modifiers (Beauty Dish and large softbox) were so darned striking! The crispness of the images...rich tones of colors of skin and make up/hair. Stunning work! Thanks so much for sharing!!

Great presentation and work. One thing that remained implicit: the flash tube on the Elinchrom is exposed. This is the classical design of a strobe/head and because it throws light around in the modifier, it does what it needs to do. This contrasts the approach taken by Profoto with the flashtube in a reflector. That makes the flash angle comparable to a 35mm (FF) lens and so the strobe would only fill most reflectors if there is at least one diffusion panel.
My advice about light modifiers is to take test shots firing them, in each of their different configurations, on a white wall from, say, 7' or 2m, with the camera at a larger distance. It helps to have a scale marking on the wall, vertically and horizontally. This will reveal (a) the actual flash angle and (b) vignetting. People are in for surprises when they see the differences (or lack thereof). There are some urban legends floating around in photography city that become truths if we never try to refute them.
I do have a deep parabola and find that the depth only really has an effect when you focus the strobe in the focal point of the parabola. From that position, it throws light in a narrower beam and this to some extent defeats the inverse square law. And that is something again to test. Or, a deep modifier with a number of diffusers becomes a plain softbox, in fact.

I'd love to see a tutorial on the transmitter pro? I'm new to Elinchrom, coming from Bowens and this is new territory for me. The manual is not helpful, at least for me.

Nice Vid Emily. I had a question about the 59" with the indirect. Is it also adjustable so that one can set the light in whatever position from the back of the soft box as desired. Thanks
