She is just such an extraordinary and inspiring teacher, she connects to her students and to the music in such a natural way, wonderful to watch! You want to be a singer and be taught by Joyce the whole day long...

What does holding the stick help with technique?
    Honestly curious.

Not totally sure, but I would guess it's about tension. It's easy to get caught in the sensation and become bogged down by the feeling there. When you can distract yourself physiologically and put tension into an area that will not affect the voice, it tends to have a positive technical impact. This happens with squatting, with throwing things, pushing against things. For larger female voices, when they go up past secondo passagio (like f#, g, ab), it helps immensely to find cheats for grounding the sound. Joyce's repetitive motion of wiggling her around and making her squat allows her to to re-ground herself throughout the phrase - VERY helpful through those high passages. The stick is like a steering wheel for all of these things, and MANY more. Joyce is a legend, and I'm sure has many more things in mind!

@@samspianos from a dancer’s point of view it seems to ground her when rhey were counter pulling.
