Best video ever. I am a smart lady used to doing things by myself. My man has rethreaded this in the past and whatever he did was really complicated. You video had me back to weed wacking in less than 5 minutes. I kept the little plastic piece (the item that was causing me most of my grief} but it works perfectly without it. Still feeds extra line by taping on the ground. I am a happy, and still independent, gal.
Man, I've been taking the spool off and trying to wind it. No wonder I've been having so many problems! The instructions are in pictures and doesn't explain it too well. Thanks!
This video is SO helpful! I was so frustrated that a Stihl product did not have an easy way to restring the spool. The instruction book does not even address this,as they want you to purchase new spools. But, the new spools get jammed right away so that is no solution. Both my husband and I went to the Stihl dealer and didn't find the help we needed to restring. This video showed how SIMPLE it is - and the tip to get rid of the plastic spool covering is great! I cut them off, and now everything is working beautifully! The Stihl trimmer is otherwise very good - and the battery lasts a very long time. We have two batteries, but one really goes a long way. THANK YOU! This video made my day! :)
Yep two batteries is the secret to a happy life. Although my trimmer doesn't use much battery. I usually keep the second battery in my Stihl leaf blower so it's ready after all the weeds and grass are trimmed.
This is my go to video each time I run out of string. It is the clearest explanation and so simple……takes the stress and worry out of this job. Thanks so much for taking the time to post and help all of us.
Hang in there Reba. I hope you and your family are ok. There's always help out there if you need it -- at the Stihl store or right here on silly old RUclips.
Great how to video! You saved me $18 and a bunch of time. The original cartridge got gummed up and stopped releasing gut. I thought it ran out of gut. When I opened the canister I saw it had instead jammed and still had 15 feet of usable gut. I thought I'd have to buy a new cartridge. But these instructions helped me cut off the white plastic 'gut cover' and rethread all that good remaining gut. Works great! Thanks again.
You're a life saver. I had been having issues with the string jamming in the spool. I followed your instructions and took the plastic off and restrung the spool. THANK YOU!!!
Coincidentally I just purchased a brand new FSA 57 and after using it for a few hrs, the factory green string stopped coming out of the spool. I watched your video and YES as you stated, the white band had caused the string to get all tangled up. I removed the white band and threw it away. I then removed all the green string and rethreaded as you demonstrated in your video. To date no more problems, thanks so much.
Brand new I only got 30min. out of mine same problem it has happened several times since. Next time I have to take it apart those white bands are coming off
This video just saved me a ton of money....... and time. I bought this trimmer for my Papa (he's 92) and showed him how to refill the line, even with how weak his hands are he's able to refill the trimmer with ease. I originally bought him the refills and he could not open it up to put the refills in it, he thinks you and I thank you for posting this. I honestly wish all the Stihl trimmers were this easy to refill?
Thanks so much for showing how to rethread the trimmer string onto the spool of a Stihl FSA-57 trimmer. Now I won’t have to buy new spools or pay to have mine rethreaded. You showed it so well and made it so easy to do, that even an old woman can rethread hers. Thank you, thank you!
Where have you been all my life...or as long as I've owned my Stihl?!! My husband bought this for me, knowing I love a neat garden and good garden toys. Thank you, thank you. I knew there had to be a simpler process than pulling the whole machine apart every time I ran out of string. And I got rid of that plastic ring, too. Heading out to trim ! Again, thank you!!
Thank you so much for this easy to understand video! My husband had a stroke and doesn’t have fine motor skills with is right hand anymore and has a hard telling me what to do. We were able to complete this task without ending up with him being frustrated and me in tears, thank you so much.
Sorry for the late reply, but you're a good wife for taking this on. I hope he's doing better but don't give him back the FSA 57! You're the yard master hahahaha
Thank you so much for this video. My cable ran out and I took it back to the local Stihl dealer…..they wound it wrongly and jammed the machine. Thanks to you it works well now. Greetings from Bulgaria.
Worked like a charm! I re-strung the spool the other day and it was a disaster when I pulled the trigger on it. She cuts great now so thanks a bunch for such an enlightening video!
Thanks for the simple way to restring this trimmer. I removed the white plastic band as well, it does make a difference, my trimmer doesn't bind up now.
Thank you so much, as lady said below I am a lady who likes to do things myself with a busy husband. Your video saved me bothering him to do what turned out to be a perfectly simple task
Thank you. Great help. I took that white thing off and it fixed my problem. I’m 73 and my hands are not as strong as they use to be. Tip for senior citizens: use a quarter to turn the spool. I even attached an Aldi quarter holder to my line reel. Happy Mimi
I thought my new trimmer had already run out of string. I was waiting for my local small engine repair guy to show me how but the grass kept growing. I got frustrated and watched your video. Turned out one side had broken off, I pulled it all out, re-threaded it and I'm back to trimming. Thank you for sharing.
Yeah that happens to me almost every time I do a lot of edging along pavement or concrete. Sometimes you can bump feed your way back to two-sided string, but other times you have to pull it all out like you did.
Genius! The Stihl manual is useless. Once I followed your instructions, everything worked and it was simple. Removing that white band from the spool made the whole loading reliable. Thank you!
Excellent video, thanks for the tips. You're right about discarding that white plastic guard sleeve -- apparently, that's how it comes after factory installation but not needed after first cut (if at all). One point: I'm using thinner string, not as stiff, so it didn't poke straight through the way yours did...but I got the idea, and just threaded through easily before I slipped it back into the trimmer head.
BEST AND EASIEST VIDEO IVE EVER SEEN!! I went to SS where i bought it from, a nice man showed me how to rethread approx 2 months .. I honestly forgot how to do ! Wayyy more complicated! You are awesome and greatly appreciated for sharing this video! I wish I could give you 2 thumbs up and a hug🤣🤣 !! ty so very much!!
My jaw dropped! Thank you so much for teaching me how to do this! I have had so many line jams from not knowing how to install the replacement line correctly. ❤❤❤
I just spent 1/2 hour loading new string in my wife’s trimmer for the first time. It almost went into the pond 😂 I sure wish I had seen your video before attempting to load the string with no manual. Thank You!
This video is something that I needed, but could not find in the manual that came with the Stihl FSA 57. Thank you so much for sharing ‘How to refill the spool’ of a Stihl FSA 57. You added cheer to my day! Thanks!!
You were a blessing today my husband had back surgery and I needed to weed eat. I could not figure it out. This was the simplest video I’ve ever seen you’re awesome thank you. Thank you.🎉
Ummm…Sir….you are my hero! I am woman who loves yard work and house remodels. I like to do things myself! Your video makes more sense than any Stihl video I looked up!!! Thanks to you I don’t feel dumb! Thank you!!!!
I'm so darn glad you were the first video that I saw. Thank you so very much for sharing this information. I was sitting here trying to figure out how to get the white cover off the spool so I could refill. Thanks again. You're a lifesaver.
Can't thank you enough for this video! NONE of the other videos make it this easy! I'm a widow and just started doing the yardwork and I was getting so frustrated! This was so helpful.
Cynthia I'm sorry to hear your sad news. With all the changes to your life, I hope yard work is among the easier ones to tackle. You might even end up enjoying it. It's just you and the machine, and it might clear your head a little. I'm happy this video helped you. Help is everywhere around you.
Thank you so much for making this. I couldn't believe it when I read the instructions and we're supposed to replace the whole part. Now I never will. It's so easy when you explain it.
Thank you. Couldn't understand why I could not find this simple maintenance procedure in the manual, other than "install a new spool of line". Nicely designed procedure. Would think they'd want to brag about it.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have this exact same trimmer model and it ran out of line just now. The white ring, I think, serves a few purposes... The first is that it has curved "teeth" which correspond to some protruding "walls" on the inside of the hub (by hub I mean the part still attached to the weed eater). HOWEVER this is redundant in terms of keeping it in place because the spool head itself has four "curved teeth" which keep it secured in place with the grey Stihl cap/ring which itself is secured to the hub. And the other purpose the white ring serves, which I believe to be the main purpose, is to deter the customer from respooling it themselves!!! On one side of the spool there are two holes which say 2.0 mm and on the opposite side there are two holes which say 1.6 mm. Next to the holes are thin, protruding "walls" and there are U-turn arrows..... So you just enter the appropriate string into the appropriate hole, wrap it around that wall in a 180° fashion as the arrows show, and then just continue spooling it. I suppose you could respool it by hand and keep the white plastic ring in place, which I will probably attempt to do before taking it off. Thank you again for uploading, this has saved me a lot of time and frustration, not to mention money!
O.M.G.! That was so easy! It took me 10 times longer to find this video than it did to follow your directions and rethread it! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thank you so much. I whippersnip and reline this for my oma and its caused me so much greif. Wow. Cant believe how simple it can be!!! I love you. I love your voice. Thanks from Hannah, Australia
Your video was perfect! So easy to follow and it actually Worked! Thank you. I’m just a little hillbilly girl with a strong back and small brain. I feel so proud not having to consult with my brother. 😊
Wow, you are definitely my hero!!!! Every Stihl dealership around here is sold out of them replacement cartilage. So they do have the replacement heads still 19.99. Well I love my FSA 57 but I'm not made of money either. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! DIY VAGurl😎
So glad I found this! You have made my day! My husband & I have a lot of upkeep around here & I like to do my part. Thank you for this detailed video making it easy for so many!
Thank you Cap'n ADK- worked a dream! Didn't cost me a penny as I had some old strimmer wire lying around from years ago. Two comments: 1. You can leave the pointless white thing on if you ensure the holes are lined up. 2. 8 metres is about 26' (I love you Americans with your quaint old measurement systems!)
Thank you so much for the video I have been waiting for months for the refill cartridge and no one has them. Thanks for your video I can now continue my work in my yard. Thanks a million. God Bless. 🙏
Wow thank you so much.I been going weekly to get my weed eater restringed and mine was jamming everytime, so now I am gone keep this piece of Stihl, I was ready throw the new whole thing away !
Thanks for the video brother, worked perfectly. I left my white ring on, just oriented the holes, worked perfectly, exactly as you demonstrated. Thanks again, great job!
On my small instruction booklet which came with the machine it mentions that there are two possibilities. A string length of eight metres (26 feet) for a 1.6 mm diameter string; and a length of five metres (16 feet) for a 2.0 mm string. Thanks for a good video.
I purchased some non branded wire reloaded cutter head , but the 2mm wire was binding. Told the dealer they said I needed branded replacement wire .Then I saw your video about the white sleeve round the wire holder, I’ve just removed that and the non branded 2mm wire working perfectly. Sending you a beer my friend
I don't think the dealer was being sneaky trying to make a sale, I think maybe he just didn't know how pesky that white ring is. Happy you got 'er goin'
Hello, could you please post what kind of string you used, maybe brand and where to buy. I googled "2mm string" with no luck as I don't understand what kind of material is used for this string. Thank you so much in advance.
Just want to say thank you! I know this video is old but my goodness it saved me so much struggle 🤣 Weed eaters and me don’t get along most of the time and this just made things a whole lot simpler! Thanks!! Gained a follower for life! 🎉
What a great video. I'm going to our local Ace Hardware tomorrow and buy an FSA 57 string trimmer. I'm an right leg amputee and work from my wheelchair. Being light weight is nice. Thanks for this.
How easy is this! Half way down the driveway and my newish 57 ran out of string... I came in and put the question to the world. I watched this video once, went out to the garage and found some cord from my dead B&D (a less than happy thing), followed these easy steps from memory (no small thing for my old, tired mind), and presto - I finished the driveway. Someone buy this nice man a glass of the best!
Joe Homeowner, you saved my sanity messing with this spool. Store was no help as was the owners manual. like you said, they just want you to buy the prewound spools and keep this a secret. Hoping this makes the trimmer my new favorite tool from my least favorite! Cheers
I would hug you if I could!!!! I just refilled mine. EASY PEAZIE. My husband is out of the country and I refuse to buy pre-made refills. I sure hope Stihl gives you a big cut on prices or free equipment. THANK YOU>
Thank you SOOO MUCH!!! You made this so SIMPLE 😅 I have subscribed to your channel!!! You’re going to get me through this 😄. Hoping you have videos on chain saws, servicing push mowers, blowers and hedge trimmers❤. Off to weed earth! You’re the best for this widowed woman!
Thank you Captain ADK! You explained that beautifully so even I was able to renew the line. Tha manual is useless. I'm not surprised that you have a legion of fans.
Best video ever. I am a smart lady used to doing things by myself. My man has rethreaded this in the past and whatever he did was really complicated. Proud of you! You can do anything. You can use the white plastic piece as a Stihl inspired cookie cutter!
Cookie cutter. Lol’s
Dear Stihl: Pay this man some $$$ legit best how to video I’ve seen on YTube 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I like $$$. I like $$$$$$$ even more. hahahaha. Thanks Mr. Cribbs!
Man, I've been taking the spool off and trying to wind it. No wonder I've been having so many problems! The instructions are in pictures and doesn't explain it too well. Thanks!
Glad I could help. Keep on trimmin'
Just brilliant, I really don't understand why Stihl don't put this in the instructions! Thank you so much!
Probably the upsell to but the 3-packs!
They do it so you will go out and buy the new heads
Still probably does not want you to know this they want you to go out and buy a new head
Thank you for saving my sanity! I worked out how to do this last year somehow but this spring I couldn't recall any of it 🤦♀️ 🤣
This video is SO helpful! I was so frustrated that a Stihl product did not have an easy way to restring the spool. The instruction book does not even address this,as they want you to purchase new spools. But, the new spools get jammed right away so that is no solution. Go Ruth!! Come back any time.... or every time!
I've been using string trimmers all my life and never knew reloading could be done this easily. Awesome video. Thanks for posting it!
Depends on the trimmer but yeah these are sweet and easy.
I can not THANK YOU ENOUGH ...Im a young widow and this was very simple, clear instructions. Im so glad I found your video. Thank you once again

Go with your gut, that's what my grandpappy always said. Sorry for the late reply, but glad you found this helpful.
You're a life saver. I had been having issues with the string jamming in the spool. I followed your instructions and took the plastic off and restrung the spool. THANK YOU!!!
It might have a purpose beyond frustrating customers, but I really don't think you need it

Changing string for the first time. I probably should have gotten the commercial model
Brand new I only got 30min. out of mine same problem it has happened several times since. Next time I have to take it apart those white bands are coming off
@@durban64 yes only so much of the line can come out then it'll start messing up with it in there. I kept it but took it out.
Thank you for sharing this. I am a 74 year old woman that has been struggling with this. It works perfectly!!!! Bless you!!
I admire you for keeping up with power tools and strenuous yard work. When I'm 74 I hope to be limber and lively just like you.
There is nothing in the manual about this.
Thank you so much.
Yeah... can't figure out why. Maybe different head come with different trimmers. Either way, this is the way.
It's infuriating how easy this was AFTER removing the white plastic part! 😅
Thank you for this video!
Infuriating followed by infuriating... hahahaha
What a great story. I have a 92 year old neighbor so I totally get it. You've made Papa proud that he can keep doing things for himself. Well done!
These were great instructions! Even I could do it, and I am not savvy with lawn equipment whatsoever. Thank you very much!
Thank you. I just bought one yesterday and the spool jammed shortly into 1st use. After watching your video I fixed it. Much appreciated.
Ha the first use always gets ya! Glad you're all set.
Yep save your money for stuff that you can't do yourself like pumping the septic tank or flying a jet to Jamaica.
Where have you been all my life...or as long as I've owned my Stihl?!! My husband bought this for me, knowing I love a neat garden and good garden toys. Thank you, thank you. Ha I guess I've been hiding behind my computer Leslie. Glad you're up and running. Keep that garden neat and keep on trimmin'
Thank you!!!!! The guy at the store I bought it at showed me how by taking it apart and winding it manually. This is so easy
Yep this style you can use the arrow method
Thank you so much for this video. My cable ran out and I took it back to the local Stihl dealer…..they wound it wrongly and jammed the machine. Thanks to you it works well now. Greetings from Bulgaria.
Stephen in Bulgaria, you made my day. The dealers are good people so don't hold it against them. Sometimes RUclips is the answer!
Great audio and visual explanations. You made it simple and sweet. Thank you!
Thanks! Glad it helped and was easy to follow.
@@captainadk2049 you saved the day bro . . . this is what utubie all about, owe you a cyber beer or two!!!!
Worked like a charm! I re-strung the spool the other day and it was a disaster when I pulled the trigger on it. She cuts great now so thanks a bunch for such an enlightening video!
Cool man. It may still jam up a little but way less than if the white ring stayed put.
Thanks for the simple way to restring this trimmer. I removed the white plastic band as well, it does make a difference, my trimmer doesn't bind up now.
That dang ring!! Nice work!
Thank you so much, as lady said below I am a lady who likes to do things myself with a busy husband. Your video saved me bothering him to do what turned out to be a perfectly simple task
Ladies like landscaping!!!
Thank you. Great help. I took that white thing off and it fixed my problem. I’m 73 and my hands are not as strong as they use to be. Tip for senior citizens: use a quarter to turn the spool. I even attached an Aldi quarter holder to my line reel.
Happy Mimi
Love the quarter tip Kathi! Even a good size flat head screwdriver would help too. Never thought of that but I'm gonna use your tip next time

Thank you. Couldn't understand why I could not find this simple maintenance procedure in the manual, other than "install a new spool of line".
Nicely designed procedure. Would think they'd want to brag about it.
Don't get me started on corporate types. Too much thinkin' and not enough doin'
I see what you’re getting at but I think this method is easier than winding it with the spool hub removed. Glad it helped you!
You Sir, are the epitome of a resourceful American homeowner! Thanks for the tip!
I like BEING a resource too. Keep coming back for more.
Perfect this is exactly the information I needed great video thanks for your help

Share the work, share the love
Great job. Thank for showing me how to do this simple technique. I've been frustrated, trying to thread the spool. Thanks.
Life's too short to be frustrated by stupid plastic string.
Ha pointless is the proper word! And thanks for the measurement. I just stretch my arms apart twice and cut the string.
Thank you so much for the video I have been waiting for months for the refill cartridge and no one has them. Thanks for your video I can now continue my work in my yard. Thanks a million. God Bless. 🙏
Oh yeah wow that's crazy. Any brand of 2.0mm (.080") string will work. Home Depot has a ton of it.
A W for us regular Joe homeowners. You saved us money. Thank you sir
Every little bit helps. Plus the pride.
Thanks, Cap! I just restrung my fsa57 easy peasy with your help‼️😃👏-Linda
Go Linda!
Sure beats my old trimmer spool string replacement! Highly recommend this product!
Thanks brother
This was an EXCELLENT video. My wifewatched you do it, and then restrung our Stihl weeder eater. Thank you!!
I’m glad it helped you guys!
Wow thank you so much.I been going weekly to get my weed eater restringed and mine was jamming everytime, so now I am gone keep this piece of Stihl, I was ready throw the new whole thing away !
There’s always a way with CaptainADK!
Thanks for the video brother, worked perfectly. I left my white ring on, just oriented the holes, worked perfectly, exactly as you demonstrated. Thanks again, great job!
Ok I hope it behaves. Keep on trimmin'
Finally a great video straight to the point. Thank you so much.
Straight is my middle name!
Thank you so much for this video.
One very happy 70 year old lady here !!😊
You're a role model!
Great job. You made this so simple. You’re my lifeline! Thanks very much. 😀👍
Lifeline on the trimmer line
Thanks so very much! Struggled with this nonsense for a week before I came across your video. Easy and down to earth - if you`ll forgive the pun!
Very punny! Keep on trimmin'
Thank you!! I look at this video every time I have to restring mine 😆😍
On my small instruction booklet which came with the machine it mentions that there are two possibilities. A string length of eight metres (26 feet) for a 1.6 mm diameter string; and a length of five metres (16 feet) for a 2.0 mm string. Thanks for a good video.
Yeah I probably do around 14 or 15 feet. Just kinda stretch my arms apart a few times and cut it there.
Can u put a thicker nylon in,as the nylon is only 1.6 mm thick absolutely junk
Captain ADK you’re awesome, best line replacement video for this model on the web!
That made me smile
Cannot thank you enough!!! You have no idea the profanity that preceded my finding your video!!!😁❤️❤️
Hey it's a family show!!!
Thanks so much for this video. Just threaded some 2mm string into my FSA 57 with ease thanks to these instructions!
Hello, could you please post what kind of string you used, maybe brand and where to buy. I googled "2mm string" with no luck as I don't understand what kind of material is used for this string. Thank you so much in advance.
@@gabidane9815 I replied to your other comment
Thanks for this! I can’t even find the correct replacement pods for my FS57, so I was SOL until I found your video.
Sweet!
Just want to say thank you! I know this video is old but my goodness it saved me so much struggle 🤣 Weed eaters and me don’t get along most of the time and this just made things a whole lot simpler! Thanks!! Gained a follower for life! 🎉
Aw thanks Amber. Keep on trimmin'
Wowie! This is EXACTLY what I needed! Thanks a million for saving my sanity.
That's what I'm here for!
What a great video. I'm going to our local Ace Hardware tomorrow and buy an FSA 57 string trimmer. I'm an right leg amputee and work from my wheelchair. Being light weight is nice. Thanks for this.
You got this! And I imagine you'll like the quieter battery operation too. Make sure you adjust the length of the shaft to your seated position.
@@captainadk2049 - will do. It worked great
This was helpful !! I couldnt get the string to come straight thru right away, it took quite a few tries, but i did it. Thx so much for the video
That happens to me too sometimes. Patience is your friend.
Dude, you are the most awesome homeowner right now today. Thank you!🎉
No YOU are!!
Great story!
Excellent! Exactly what I needed and I really enjoyed throwing the white retainer plastic ring. You're the man.
Ring toss!
Joe Homeowner, you saved my sanity messing with this spool. Store was no help as was the owners manual. like you said, they just want you to buy the prewound spools and keep this a secret. Hoping this makes the trimmer my new favorite tool from my least favorite! Cheers
Sweet! Another happy customer -- of mine! Hahahahaha. You should go back to the store and show them what you learned.... in a nice way.
I would hug you if I could!!!! I just refilled mine. EASY PEAZIE. My husband is out of the country and I refuse to buy pre-made refills. I sure hope Stihl gives you a big cut on prices or free equipment. THANK YOU>
Virtual hug accepted. Keep on trimmin'
You are the best!! Thank you so much. I was so frustrated...and your video has given me trimming peace! Thank you.
The only thing better than trimming peace is financial peace!
Oh boy, I don't have videos on all that stuff but here's a GREAT small engine channel -- ruclips.net/channel/UC6MEb54vwjicHs7L39sS4hA
I can't begin to describe how incorrectly I was doing this. Science Bless you, sir.
I like Science too!
One of the best and most helpful videos out there. Just wanted to send a huge THANK you Sir.
All hail the Road King! Keep on trimmin'
"Coming right out the other side" best part of the video! The excitement in your voice lol. BTW thanks, this was super easy to do on mine!
After struggling with the dang thing, it IS the best part :)
Omg SOO much easier than all those other tutorials, thank you! ❤
That's what I'm here for
Thank you for taking the time to make the video. Works great. I knew there had to be an easier way.
You are the man! Easiest instructions I’ve ever followed
I hate strugglin with stuff. So I tried to make it easy for everyone else.
Thank you!! I just don’t an hour doing g it the hard way (and wrong!) then found your video!! Love it! You explained it oerfectly❤❤❤
RUclips should always be the first stop hahahaha
Absolutely the most clear, helpful video in this topic!
That was my plan! Glad it helped you.
Thank you Captain ADK! You explained that beautifully so even I was able to renew the line. Tha manual is useless. I'm not surprised that you have a legion of fans.
Nice of you to say!
Awesome. Best instruction out there on this product. The threading can be finicky but I did it!
Yeah Susan sometimes it doesn't feed straight through if the tip is bent but usually on the second or third try it'll come right out the other side
I'm going to pay for my dinner tonight with the money this video saved me. Thanks so much!!
Free dinner! Sort of
Fabulous video. I just have to figure out where to save it so I can consult it again in the future. Your instructions worked perfectly.
Thanks Robert! You can just bookmark the page or email/text it to yourself.
