I was waiting to see those magnet squares! If you didn’t have them already I was gonna recommend. I remember my mom got me a set from QVC years ago! And a few years later she hunted down more for her grandkids, I would play with those things for hours on end. Holy crap nostalgia.

But watching you really helped persuade me to be a teacher. So so happy you put this video together this week! I've been wanting to implement a Soft Start during our breakfast time and the gap between before we start our Morning Meeting. This is perfect! I appreciate all the links as well, so now I can put a list together to hand over to our parent group to see if they can purchase more for us. I love buying off-brand legos from Dollar Tree as well as the Playdoh (not STEM...but could be I suppose). And you also helped me realize I should put all my brain teachers type board games and card games (for gifted/TAG students) in a bin as well to add to the mix. Thank you!!!

I'm part of a FIRST Robotics Competition team and our team took traditional STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and added a characteristic side (Sportsmanship, Teamwork, Enthusiasm and Motivation). This is something we call STEM^2 and teach it to our younger students that we host (Grades 3-8). I think it makes students who might not be as interested in STEM still feel included and gives them a first step forward.
My son loves playing a game called Build or Boom that is like the game you were talking about. Each person gets the same set of supplies. The students build the structure in the picture and who ever "blows up" the other teams structure wins...well, 1st to 10 wins.
I love your ideas for STEM bins! I am a high school chemistry teacher and I think my students would love to have some of these options. You are doing a fantastic job! Keep up the great work!
I love your videos! I would love to know how you budget to get materials like stem centers for your classroom? I am a new teacher and have a wishlist for what I would love to have for my students but materials can be expensive. Any tips for staying on budget while building up your resources?
This is a great question! First of all, do not go out and try to purchase all of this at once. It would be way too overwhelming (and obviously expensive). I highly recommend checking out Donor's Choose or a similar funding website to try to get the materials funded from donors. You could also set up an Amazon wishlist or something similar for parents and/or family and friends to donate through! You can also write grants to try to get funding for materials. If you are going to pay out of pocket, you can just purchase 1-2 new items a year to add to your collection! I love to save up any gift cards I get for gifts and use them towards materials for my classroom! Also, check out yard sales and consignment shops because you never know what you might find!

I love this video! My goal as a teacher is to get more kids (especially girls) into math and science. I also love astronomy so I’m trying to get kids passionate about that too.
The 2nd grade teacher I work with currently uses Rush Hour, Hoppers, Dog Pile, and Cat Stax as part of her Math games centers. The kids love them and they have different leveled cards so they always have one they can try and master no matter their level.

If so, I really love the website www.generationgenius.com! They have amazing videos and then have discussion questions, vocabulary, and articles that go with the videos! It is a paid website but you can get a free trial to try it out and prepare for the exam!

Naturegirl121 There are no Common Core standards for science. CCSS only applies to ELA and math. NGSS is a national set of standards that some states follow for science. I personally am not a fan of assessments and don’t think they are overly important as a part of the learning process so I won’t be dedicating videos to that.

I, too, have centers for my early finishers, but I do want to bring more centers like you have that are STEM related. I teach k-2. The biggest issue I have had this year with my centers is theft. So my question is, have you had any issues with kids stealing your pieces from your centers? Have you done/said anything to prevent it? Thank you!
Yes, I actually have had a few problems with theft. When I first encountered it with my students this year, I chose to make the STEM centers off limits for about two weeks and explained to my students why. After that, I haven't really had any issues with theft... at least that I'm aware of!
Actually, your philosophy is very sound. I just read an article (sorry I can’t link it, it was from a member only database) in an education journal that summarized a study done about play. It concluded that all grades, including high school, benefits from unstructured play. Unstructured play with STEM materials requires independent thinking and problem solving skills whereas structured STEM removes those aspects because the teacher assigns a specific task, removing imagination all together. You are also supporting SEL. Children build confidence as they master skills through STEM play and often work in groups. For those who can not afford to buy the products shown (most districts don’t supply these so teachers would have to buy them from personal funds), think outside the box. Recycled and found objects make great building materials that encourage imaginative play too.
I totally agree! Also, these products were all personally purchased from my own funds and were not provided by my school. You can definitely use recycled materials and even find materials for cheap at yard sales and consignment shops! =

Your principal has outdated ideas about learning. It’s too bad administration doesn’t always support teachers rather than tear them down. This is why we are losing so many great teachers.

Unfortunately it was my first year teaching and I wasn't able to think of the best response when she criticized me about it after an observation. She used a lot of scare tactics to push me away from "fun" learning in general. It ended up pushing me out of kindergarten and into 8th grade ELA. However, if I ever return to primary school, I'll absolutely use that approach! My dream classroom looks like yours @@PocketfulofPrimary
Unfortunately, many principals are under the gun to improve the test scores. Most students aren't passing these tests anyway and they keep trying to change the test to get students to pass. Frankly, my students are bored with answering these higher order questions that I can't find the answer to without looking it up! Engagement is down and I am trying to keep them motivated. I think these are great ideas. Not sure what my principal would think, but I am trying it anyway!
The hashtag blocks from the target dollar spot aren’t around any more. I search every time. I bought 6 tubes around thanksgiving last year not knowing how much my kids would love them. I have been dying to get more. I decided to order the plus plus kind to add to my set.....I quickly discovered that they are not compatible with the target ones.
Yeah, I should have mentioned that the hashtag blocks and Plus Plus aren't compatible with each other. The hashtag blocks still pop up in my Target from time to time so keep an eye out! They will definitely be back!
How do assist your students with managing the stations and keeping all the correct pieces in the correct box. Why? I can already see my students rushing to clean up and the Legos would be in the tinker box and that would drive me crazy. Thanks
Hi Michelle! I just wanted to ask you about your thoughts on STEAM. It’s just like STEM but you add the arts into it. I’m super bias because I’m a music teacher myself, but I would love another teacher’s perspective! And the same goes with anyone else in the comments! I personally just think that adding a bin with either simple art supplies like blank paper and colored pencils/crayons/markers or even going to the music teacher and asking for simple music activities to put in a bin or two is just another way for students to express themselves that they can share with their friends, or their favorite teacher or family at home. Just my thoughts :)
I definitely have lots of art supplies in my room available to my students! We do projects during every study hall, most of which incorporate the arts in some way. I personally store these materials in another way separate from the STEM centers, primarily because most of the art materials are disposable and don't last as long as the STEM centers do!

it's been a while since ive been in school but i want to play with these activities now as an adult. it looks like fun
when i was a pre k teacher we used all of these and now look at older grades using these

How do assist your students with managing the stations and keeping all the correct pieces in the correct box. Why? I can already see my students rushing to clean up and the Legos would be in the tinker box and that would drive me crazy. Thanks

Hi Michelle! I just wanted to ask you about your thoughts on STEAM. It’s just like STEM but you add the arts into it. I’m super bias because I’m a music teacher myself, but I would love another teacher’s perspective! And the same goes with anyone else in the comments!
I personally just think that adding a bin with either simple art supplies like blank paper and colored pencils/crayons/markers or even going to the music teacher and asking for simple music activities to put in a bin or two is just another way for students to express themselves that they can share with their friends, or their favorite teacher or family at home. Just my thoughts :)
I definitely have lots of art supplies in my room available to my students! We do projects during every study hall, most of which incorporate the arts in some way. I personally store these materials in another way separate from the STEM centers, primarily because most of the art materials are disposable and don't last as long as the STEM centers do!
Pocketful of Primary Alright! That’s still good to hear! I know that schools all over the country are pulling arts programs and pushing STEM more than STEAM. I do see the benefits from both, but I’m still going to believe that the arts play a big role in students learning. Thank you so much Michelle for answering!

Do u have rules for how many kids can use a stem bin at one time? I’m having issues with my students fighting over things, but I’m knew to 3rd grade.
How might you adapt the centers to STEAM regather than STEM? I’m a music teacher and I’d love some ideas.
