  • Bruach na Frithe : The Early Bird catches the worm ; Red Skye in the morning - shepherds warning... Two well know phrases that applied to me on this trip onto the Black Cuillin Ridge in Skye. Having failed (only just) to get a view from this mountain the last time I was keen to get to the top before the heavens opened and obscured the view.

Red sky at night, shepherds delight...... Red sky in the morning, SAILORS warning. It's a common misnomer that is repeated so often, shepherds warning', that it has now become the well known weather rhyme. Why it is 'sailors' is because the red sky in the morning proceeds bad weather, usually wind & rain, hence giving the sailors warning to lower their sails. If it was for shepherds they wouldn't be bothered, the sheep are more than equipped to cope with wind and rain. I thank you. Great upload Murray, you've seen some sights, that's for sure. ATB

What a gobsmackingly beautiful sunrise! Certainly worth the early morning. Skye really does seem to be your spiritual home. Maybe someday you’ll be able to buy a tiny piece of it and have a second home there. Oh, well, even if you never do, the camper van makes these adventures very much easier, doesn’t it? Cheers and ATB!

thanks for bringing back some good memories, went up that mountain about 20 years ago, on a blazing hot day, Mrs Gary, got on to the ridge and got the hight wobbles so i left her clinging to a rock while i got to the top. on the way back the only man made object was the Slig inn, who's presence hurried up the walk back, the first few in the bar didn't touch the sides.

You can see why Collie preferred the Cuillin to the Alps. Such beauty without the masses of people. As long as you time things right and pick your routes wisely.

Ah shame you didn't get to the summit for the sunrise but what views from any of the Skye summits when you get them. Fell in love with Skye again recently, going out of season was sublime. We took jelly babies 😉

Wonderful! Thank you. What month was this shot in? If you had the choice wld you go in late feb (for possible snow experience with appropriate equipment) or wait until April for longer hours and perhaps better weather although it is Scotland west?
