I’m delighted, honestly, that we get to keep having you in any capacity at all. Fish tank videos, cooking videos, philosophy videos, Adam-got-drunk-and-has-THINGS-to-say-goddammit videos. I, for one, will take’em all. I enjoy your approach to content in general and how thoughtful you are with topics and research. It’s even calming to me, so I’m happy we all get to keep this mutually beneficial “you post videos, we watch videos, you get money, we get enjoyment” arrangement going for however long it lasts.
Best to you on your journey, familiar stranger!

Thank you for finally making me understand how therapy works! The therapist just being there to support you while you figure out your own thoughts makes a lot of sense. When debugging software, one of the most powerful approaches is trying to explain your problem to someone else. Typically, they won't be able to solve the problem for you, but it forces you to organize your thoughts into a more communicable structure. That is often enough to realize something you didn't really see before, and you typically end up giving yourself advice on the next steps.

You have an amazing personality, and if that personality, whom I've enjoyed watching for all these years, wants to put his sparkle in different fields, I am all for it. Adam, if you are reading all these comments, my thoughts went straight to the same place @davidalves3636 did. I’ve never sat in a kitchen cooking things you’ve presented. I, on several occasions, disagreed with your methods. It didn’t stop me from watching and I watch because you’re entertaining, interesting, and really make a connection with your viewers. I watch the fish tank videos for the enjoyment of watching what you’re working on and are passionate about. I appreciate that you brought this to us though as if you hadn’t, I’d be very confused at the sudden shift and the lack of content and that would frustrate me. You do you man. Keep yourself mentally healthy and happy and enjoy that wonderful family of yours and just know there are people out here in this internet void who truly appreciate what you contribute to the world no matter how many hours you work in a week. And if you suddenly stop all of this tomorrow, I’d be sad but also happy that I got these years of being able to flip on RUclips when I was bored and got to watch someone do something cool.

@@GuidoC-Design I know right, and you don't need to quit working because you have financial security, can actually venture into risky careers that you always wanted to try out.
So much one is free to do when financially secure, I guess some people just don't enjoy life enough to try. Therapy won't be fixing that.

      @KK-ef1ow 3 месяца назад +10

@GuidoC-Design I said my future, not my present. My wife and I still work 40+ hours a week, and will have to through to retirement. We're just already set for retirement when it does happen.
That said, just because you're rich, doesn't mean you are happy. Money buys security, which can make people happier, but it doesn't buy happiness itself. Some of the most depressed people on the planet are Olympic athletes right after they win medals. Why? Because once you achieve something, you're left with the feeling of "well what next?"
My own personal journey with existential dread was that I saw a future where I grind work for 40+ years and retire in the worst portions of my life(old). I got pretty jaded from it. Everyone strives for purpose. It's part of the hierarchy of needs. But most of us are too caught up in the grind to sit and think about it.

A therapist once encouraged me to "stop staring into the abyss". I'm a contributing member of society and I take pride in my contribution and that is enough. It took a while to internalize that. No guilt, no apologies. Happiness comes in moments, sometimes very little moments, so we must be open to them, savor them and be grateful for them.

Something I didn't fully realize about mental health, and no one really told me, was that it goes in phases, it doesn't get directly sorted by external factors(money etc), but it does generally get better over long periods of time, and long term it becomes about management.

Ever since I was a child my passions have been music, science, aquariums, and cooking. My career fulfilled my science passion, and allowed me to “run from the tiger” with enough time to catch my breath and pursue my other passions. Repetitive strain injuries took the performance of music hobby from me, but I still had listening to music, the aquarium hobby, and cooking when the “tiger” took a breather. When I retired, watching your very science friendly food videos greatly helped my cooking hobby, and when I saw your first “fish” video I was thrilled that now I could get some great ideas for my aquarium hobby from you. Whatever content you decide to make in the future, I will be looking forward to. Enjoy your “semi-retirement”.

One of the things from your videos which has long resonated with me is "you do you" - you've had that awareness that other people are going to do things differently, and that's fine. And so it's more than fair we return the favour - so I'm very glad you're taking the time and space for you to do you.
Seeing both you and Tom Scott go into semi-retirement within a few months is sad - but it's a reminder that making "content" is demanding, and a struggle, and exacts costs which most of us don't fully appreciate. So I think in and of itself, this video, and your very honest account of what you're feeling and thinking and doing, is a good thing - as it can hopefully help other content makers think about their own situations.
Personally I'm absolutely here for any short- or medium-form videos you'll do, whether it's on food or fishtanks or freon contamination - I enjoy your style, and your insights. (To be honest, I'm more interested in the fishtanks than some of the food.) So I'm sticking around for wherever this channel goes.

This is exactly my case too. I stopped running for two years, I tended my wounds, those that I could heal at least, but then I discovered that the bed sores can be worse than bush scratches and we, people, are made to run. From tigers. Not sit and think about what to do. So I went out and found myself another tiger to chase me. Now I'm running again, feel better because now I know this is what I've chosen for myself and was not given as an inevitability. One day I'll stop again and decide again. But today, today is "Run Forrest, run!".

I work as an IT specialist, and I mainly sit in front of a computer, but I still slate out about a month of the year (in total, spread over the 11 working months) where I get out on-site and do something hands-on just to give my brain a rest. When I was 18 I rebuilt a VW Beetle, and everyone kept asking me how I could work the 1000 or so hours to get it done, and telling me how they never could do that themselves. I spent 8 hours a day in front of a computer back then even, so I had no need to sit on a sofa for the rest of the evening when I got back home, instead, I could easily spend the whole evening tinkering with that car, music blaring in the background and my brain mostly on autopilot. Just lovely.

Adam, I'm currently in college and have been following you since high school. Here's the one thing I'll say - thank you. That's all, because this is your life. I'm just happen to be a consumer of your content on RUclips. "You do you", like you say

Thank you Adam. I'm staying right here simply because I love listening to your views in life. I started here because I loved the food, but got to know you are much more brilliant than just that. Had a bunch of your podcasts playing in the car and loved listening to them. I'm glad you have time to look after yourself now. Congrats on your incredible run here no matter where it takes you from here. I can relate to a lesser degree. Burn out is a significant problem and I struggle with similar sounding mental gymnastics that you seem to be. Really appreciate these topics.

One of my favorite videos of yours adam, i truly feel like your one of the few good role models on the internet. Not to add stress by saying that, simply being who you already are will achieve this. So thanks for being you!

What a great way you've explained living with trauma, and finally addressing it! I've been in therapy for 5 years and have finally come to a safe, and stable enough place to process my issues. I try and remember to be kind to myself when I find I'm struggling with what I've managed without much thought in the past. I'm so happy you've out run your tiger and taking the time to address your leg wounds. In regards to your content, I am here for it all. I love your scienc-y foods videos, and when I saw you had fish videos too I was over the moon. I currently only have a 10 gallon, but hope to one day have a large tank or pond for gold fish. Wishing you the best ♥

I think it's worth mentioning that I always enjoyed your cooking videos exactly because you seemed like a smart guy. You've always been the guy to question how things are done, experiment, and always shown deep understanding of not only what we do, but why we do it.

Adam, thank you for your honesty. For what it may be worth, I like your content because I like how you teach. The specific content tends to be secondary. You could discuss whatever you are interested in and I would be happy to learn. You are a good teacher. We all know that. Which is why even this video feels valuable to me. So, in whatever capacity, if you decide to continue, there are many of us who just want to learn with you. Get well, Adam. You’ve done good work and many of us are very grateful.

This is just another example of you being You, and as a result, young men (and women) have a wonderful role model. I commend you for your openness and honesty. Talking about you was one of the ways that I could connect with a son who was otherwise very difficult to talk to. Thank you.

I'm a 1982 baby, close in age to Adam. Let me tell you, we're all here with him right now. When I turned 40 my best friend's mom told me she didn't really learn who she was until 40 and I get that now. You've got to live enough to be able to evalute your life and who you are and how long you have left and what you're going to do with that.

Most of us are running from the tiger and most of us are aware of all the scars and injuries and unattended to problems that we carry while we run. We get it. I'm happy you can now attend to yourself. I wish I will be able to one day.

I regularly quote you to friends of mine, you broke me out of a doom spiral I was having as some of the projects I was working on started falling apart. You're a cool guy and what I get from your content isn't so much the food facts (although I've brought those up to my *family*) but a perspective on life I wouldn't otherwise have, and to some degree, from what you divulged before, a psychological mirror -- someone with similar internal struggles in a different external situation that I can learn from. That's definitely worth a shift in the focus of the content.

I love your videos. I appreciate your down to earth food content. I suffer from mental illness and find your food content very enjoyable from a chef standpoint. I love your analogy of the tiger. In the food industry, the “grind” is draining but I do it because of passion before money but it does get muddled together at times. I will still watch your content because of your personality and impact your content has on my life. It takes a strong person to come to your realization. People love you for what you do, take it easy and enjoy the fruits of your labor. I don’t know your beliefs, but, I pray God blesses you for your genuine efforts. Thank you!

If you are about 55, everything you said is probably true for 80% of the western world. It’s normal and good to want to do something different, however, it won’t bring the peacefulness you are seeking. That comes from understanding what was missing in our childhoods, and trying to heal. Accepting ourselves is the path to happinesses. You are a good communicator and once you understand what was missing in your childhood, use those communication talents to have imaginary conversations with parents or others around the hurtful childhood situations and through those two way imaginary conversations, you can begin to heal those old wounds. Self empathy and empathy for others is the key. The wounds likely didn’t happen as you were running away from the tiger as an adult, those wounds happened as a child when certain situations occurred. Thank you for being so open and honest and I wish you peace and fulfillment.
