    If you’re looking for an affordable all in one field monitor to connect to your camera then this new monitor might just be the perfect solution for you. It’s the Viltrox DC 550 Pro and for its relatively low cost it packs quite a punch!
    Viltox recently sent me their new field monitor to review and on opening it I was immediately impressed by the completeness of the package.
    It comes complete with a nice hard zip case, a quick release folding sun hood, tilt and swivel cold shoe mount, NPF500 battery with USB-C charging port, as well as including mini and micro HDMI cable to connect to various cameras, although not a full size HDMI cable which is a shame.
    I think the quality and number of accessories included really sets this product aside from other field monitors because most come as a stand alone monitor and you then have to purchase the accessories separately.
    The monitor itself is really well built, it is plastic just like most other field monitors but it feels fairly rugged, all the buttons and switches feel nice to operate and I’m confident it will withstand the general abuse of everyday use.
    There are 3 versions of this monitor, the DC550, the DC 550 Lite and the DC550 Pro. This is the pro version which has all the features the product offers which includes a 1200 nit brightness display, an internal cooling fan, Touch screen control and a comprehensive selection of built in monitoring tools.
    All 3 models share the same body which features 3 power options via either NPF battery, USB-C port, or DC input so there is no shortage of ways to power this thing up. The monitor also has on/off switch, 4 user programable shortcut buttons so you can easy turn on or off peaking, false colour, histograms or any other of the options the monitor offers. Also included is an SD card slot so you can load your own LUT files to the monitor, its great to see this feature included on such a budget product as until now only higher end monitors have offered this feature.
    On a similar note, Im super impressed that this monitor includes a HDMI loop out port, this is really handy if you want to send a signal out to another monitor or recorder or can even be used with something like the hollyland Mars wireless transmission system to transmit to a directors monitor or livestream setup.
    The monitor also has this large control dial which rotates but can also be pressed in to confirm a selection. Its a novel approach to navigating settings and works fairly well, however I personally much prefer using the touch screen to navigate and if I didn’t have the touch screen model I think I would perhaps find relying on the dial a little tricky at times.
    I really like the positioning of the HDMI ports on this monitor. Most monitors place them on the side meaning you have wires jutting out awkwardly but the DC550 has them at the bottom meaning it’s much easier to route your cables and keep your setup tidy. The DC550 also has a 3.5mm audio jack for monitoring your audio.
    The screen itself is full HD 1920x1080p and on the DC550 and pro versions boast an impressive 1200 nits of brightness and a powerful backlight. This is insanely bright and I’m confident this would still be usable even in the brightest of outdoor filming situations.
    Tools include; Import 3D LUT files, Parade waveforms, vector scope, histogram, focus peaking, false colour, audio monitoring, image flip, anamorphic de-squeeze, grids and guides, safe zones, and the ability to pinch to zoom if you have the touch screen version.
    So that’s the Viltrox DC 550 Pro, an impressively feature rich budget field monitor which I think completely kills the competition.
    I’ll see you next time!

      Yeah I have a shinobi also and have to say this is pretty awesome for the money. If I helps you justify your purchase I will say that the shinobi has slightly better build quality and even though the Viltrox includes a mount and battery I still prefer the smallrig mount I have and still use additional NPF batteries so you’ve still made a great investment. The only thing the viltrox has which the shinobi lacks is the sun hood and the hdmi loop out

    I just got a monitor, I have a question about the work of luts.
    The monitor distorts colors terribly when using luts, some of them show completely different colors that they should.
    I compared it with Portkeys PT6 and with what is obtained in the final cut after applying the lut.
    Does it work poorly with luts for you too?

    • @WillChidlow
      @WillChidlow  5 месяцев назад

      I haven't experienced this personally, however, as i mentioned in the video, using high brightness distorts the image massively so perhaps this is a factor for you?

      Not to my knowledge, although i never turn it off and have found the battery life to be pretty great. • @WillChidlow
      @WillChidlow  8 месяцев назад +4

      I get about 2.5-3 hours of real world shooting from the NPF-550 that’s included with the monitor which is very comparable to other field monitors with the same size battery. I have a lot of other larger NPF batteries and tend to prefer them if I know I’ll be shooting for a while. An NPF700 or 900 will last you most of a days shoot. The fan has 3 settings, low, mid or high, and can be turned off. In low it is almost silent, in mid or high an on camera shotgun mic might pick it up a bit. In the fairly cool UK climate I’ve had it off mostly and had no overheating issue but I like that it’s there if needed. It turns on quicker than my atomos shinobi, maybe 3-4 seconds to boot. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 🙏👍😎
