  • What a Rolex looks like on the outside is no secret. Being the best-selling luxury watchmaker in the world, chances are the Submariner’s visage is familiar to most of the people here-but what about the inside? What lies beneath that plain, unadorned case back? In an era when most manufacturers are desperate to show off the great amounts they spent on their movement, Rolex continues to buck that trend. Let’s take that case back off and see just what’s going on inside.

As always brilliant review and I am so proud that you chose the Submariner Rolesor yellow gold and stainless steel with the black face. This is exactly my watch! I chose it due to no all stainless Submariner, though I later realized this was on my vision board, so it makes me very happy. I still sometimes question my purchase because of the popularity of the stainless and the ss and gold can be flashy. I have learned to rock it with a white tee and jeans or even a hoodie and sweatpants as athleisure and it works well. Seeing it in this video reassures my purchase, and I love my 3135 movement. Thanks for all of your detail. Do you, the presenter or anyone else have any comments on the ss and yellow black face sub in this video? Thanks in advance

How would you explain a 1982 Submariner 16800 surviving multiple combat engagements, more then 1000 jumps, multiple combat dives & better then a half million rounds ranging from 9mm - 50 cal, The ultimate tool watch? I haven’t even had the need to overhaul my 2008 Sub yet. It’s just as reliable and accurate as the day I bought it new. The steel Rolex uses is far superior in durability and resistance to ordinary dings and scuffs that rather quickly ruined the appearance of my Omega Bond SMP. That Omega has been repaired five times and overhauled 3 times since buying it new in 2004. It’s also been refinished every servicing to keep its appearance decent.
The hassle of owning an expensive yet quite temperamental timepiece has ruined me for anything that is not Rolex.

One thing I noticed with Rolex is how impossibly smooth the crown thread is. With other watches I need to look for the start of the thread by pushing in and turning counterclockwise, and when I feel a 'jerk' it means I got it. It's kinda like turning the lid of a peanut butter jar backwards. With Rolex, you don't have to do that because you just push the crown in and it catches all the time, unlike some watches where you kinda feel the threads getting stuck and you have to twist back to not risk cross-threading.

I've gone off Rolex due the absurdity of how their AD's allocate and influence who gets what. In 1989 I bought a Submariner that was sitting in the shop window. I'm not prepared to beg or pay someone for a watch that they got from a dealer just to charge me more for it. Expensive watches are fine until you want to sell them. Watchfinder were not interested in buying my IWC, even though I would have bought another watch from them. My loyalty is currently with the Japanese watch industry. We like our toys but I look at the manufacturing cost of a watch in relation to its SRP and I get the feeling someone is lifting my leg.

When I sent my Speedmaster Mk 4.5 to Switzerland for servicing costing thousands of dollars, they refused to replace the screw down case back with an exhibition case back even tho I know they do use them on a few other models and I believe the sizes are standardized. Not to complain, as Omega did a fantastic job and it was well worth the price. Just that that little extra of a see thru back would have been nice.

It's really just a relic of a bygone era preserved for tradition rather than merit. A modern quartz watch is typically 100x more accurate than a mechanical chronometer and suffers none of the effects of age that cause a mechanical movement to become less accurate through physical shock or material fatigue. Anyone who needs to actually keep accurate time would be a fool to purchase a mechanical movement. These are like a Model T Ford, if the factory had remained open and producing vehicles for 100 years. They'd be the best, most refined Model T's you'd ever see but of course they are still relics, long since surpassed by even mass market car markers (or watch makers, in this case)

I'm interested in your expert opinion regarding the following questions. Are the Rolex watches made today still made without compromise? Do they use their own in-house movement or, like cars, do they farm out parts to countries all over the world and "assemble" them in-house? Rolex makes 900,000 a year. A. Lange & Sohne makes 5,000 watches a year. I have no proof but I think the scarcity of Rolex is an artificial construct. In fact, I highly doubt that there are enough buyers for the 900,000 watches a year Rolex makes. For instance, what if customer demand is closer to 100,000 watches a year? How would we know? Perhaps more nefarious, Rolex could have modeled their business after the diamond industry. Production is artificially regulated to keep demand and prices high. What's the rub with Rolex?

I agree . I have a couple of Rolex watches 15 years to 20 with 0 problems . But the Haute horology brands you mentioned have a tendency to really be a bit sensitive and will deviate slightly due to shock (inherent design of a half bridge), especially models with more complications. More parts the more beautiful but more things can go wrong . Put a Rolex against .......lets say an Omega , GS (newest movement) would probably be more appropriate.

How often should we service a Rolex ?

    • @npaul4171
      @npaul4171 3 года назад

If a 3100-series, every 10 years is the rule of thumb, but it is best to let the watch tell you. Major changes in timekeeping ability and/or a drop in amplitude/increase in beat error (if you have a timegrapher) suggest it is time for service. If the watch is frequently used for water activities, at several points during that 10 years it might be a good idea to have its seals checked. With the 3200-series, Rolex still says every 10 years but it isn't clear yet how long this movement can go between servicing given it is relatively new.

Its silly that Rolex is pretentious enough to overcharge for colored bezels but don't display their movements. 🧐

At 3:45...the seconds hand isn't hacking the way it supposed to. It should be more fluid without that pause. Is the watch a replica?

This was enlightening. While the masses have Rolex as status symbols and desk divers, knowing they are truly capable is pleasing to know. I guess Rolex is the Watch world like Toyota/Lexus is to cars with high durability, and resale value , and desirability

As I've learned about Rolex's history its sad to see where they are going now. I understand some people's frustration who have loved watches for decades and lived the underdog Rolex to see what its doing now.

Been thinking about swapping my 114060 for one of those two-tone sub dates, and I think this is a sign.

Nice and very educational piece on watch movements. The day will come when Rolex start to decorate their movement on a display case back and that will be the day Rolex move up to challenge the watch holly trinity including retail prices.

I love clear backs. Rolex can do whatever they want, so if they don't make clear backs on some models then, well, I get at least one watch somewhere else.

I agree that Rolex could be a little more transparent (sapphire case back), pun intended. Great video as always and thank you for featuring the occasional brand such as Rolex; not everyone has a Patek Philippe bank account, particularly during this pandemic.

Hey, I wear my submariner every day and I’m a facilities maintenance technician, so my watch has visible wear 🤣 it’s a tool watch to me! BTW I don’t really care for exhibition casebacks on normal watches, the submariner movement is pretty plain, plus it’s on a bracelet, it’s hard to see anyways unless you unlink the bracelet. I hope they leave what works really well... alone!

I think another reason for the plain caseback is that often watches are gifted or handed down through generations. The plain caseback often is engraved with a name or a sentiment...

Many watchmakers give you the option to choose between a sapphire display case or closed one for engraving. Some even would engrave what you want on the caliber itself so.....
